Comprehensive Pain Assessment For Veterans In Long-Term Care., Christopher Jenkins
Comprehensive Pain Assessment For Veterans In Long-Term Care., Christopher Jenkins
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Background Literature supports the need for comprehensive pain assessment (CPA) in long-term care facilities. CPAs provide valuable information for facility providers and health care staff to intervene appropriately regardless of cognitive ability. Without the use of such tools, pain can go undertreated or ignored for this underserved population causing undue suffering and poor quality of life. Chronic pain perpetuates an endless cycle of immobility, falls, injury, functional decline, and eventual death for this population.
Purpose: A CPA was implemented, evaluated, and integrated into the care processes in a long-term care facility for veterans
Method: The IHI improvement model with a …

Impact Of Palliative Care Screening Process Implementation Among Intensive Care Unit Registered Nurses., Logan Marie Griffith
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Background: Palliative care is specialized care for individuals living with serious illness(s), focusing on providing symptom relief and improving quality of life (Center to Advance Palliative Care, 2020), but not all hospitals have a process to assess for palliative care needs.
Significance: Without a well-defined process for assessing patients’ readiness for palliative care, patients’ needs may not be consistently met. Approximately only 14% of people worldwide who need palliative care services receive this care (World Health Organization, 2020).
Purpose: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to implement a palliative care screening process to identify patients with palliative care …
Malignant Hyperthermia, Shannen Steinbrunner
Malignant Hyperthermia, Shannen Steinbrunner
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
This poster aims to investigate the concept of malignant hyperthermia (MH). MH is a rare and fatal skeletal muscle reaction that can progress rapidly, especially if advanced practice nurses do not recognize the symptoms or know how to treat them (Hopkins et al., 2021). This hypermetabolic disorder has predisposing factors that should alert APRNs to avoid specific trigger agents such as volatile anesthetics and succinylcholine (Rosenbaum & Rosenburg, 2022). Genetic predispositions also play a significant role in the etiology of MH (Hopkins et al., 2021). Viewers will learn why dantrolene is the medication of choice for MH and why symptoms, …
Pathophysiology Of Pulmonary Hypertension, Kayla Thomsen
Pathophysiology Of Pulmonary Hypertension, Kayla Thomsen
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Abstract
Understanding the pathophysiology behind various diseases is essential for nursing, especially those in advanced practice roles such as nurse anesthetists. Pulmonary hypertension (PH), characterized by vasoconstriction, vascular remodeling, and thrombosis, has a complex physiological process and a vast compilation of patient considerations (Sarkar & Desai, 2018). PH affects up to fifty million people worldwide, with 1-year survival rates of 90.4% and 5-year survival rate of 65.4%, further solidifying the importance of understanding the disease for quick diagnosis and treatment (Bandyopadhyay et al., 2021). Diagnosis of PH is often delayed, with some patients experiencing symptoms up to two years before …

Acute Kidney Injury In Perioperative Patients, Matthew Hall
Acute Kidney Injury In Perioperative Patients, Matthew Hall
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
In the surgical setting, caring for a patient in the operative and postoperative phases require perioperative care providers to be attentive to risk factors that can lead to potential harm. Of all the possible complications of surgical cases, acute kidney injury is more common than others. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is kidney function that abruptly declines over a few hours or days, increases serum creatinine, causes a period of oliguria, and has three levels of severity (Zarbock et al., 2018, p.1236-1237). Risk factors predispose patients to AKI, including age, diabetes, cardiac failure, previous history of AKI, sepsis, and many more. …

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Hypertension is a major cause of premature death and a leading cause of cardiovascular diseases globally. Heart diseases, renal failure, stroke, premature deaths, and disability mostly if not all contribute to the cardiovascular burden and thus pose a public health issue worldwide. The trends in hypertension are similar globally with a high prevalence noted in low and medium-income countries. Studies have identified smoking, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, alcohol consumption, overweight or obesity, and sedentary lifestyle as modifiable risk factors in these populations. However, hypertension remains a substantial public health concern despite providers’ engagement in multi-component hypertension treatment and patient involvement …

Cultivating the shared belief that individuals matter within an organization enhances the empowerment of staff and supports enthusiastic engagement in organizational efforts aimed toward a common mission, vision, and goals (McShane & Von Glinow, 2019). The nursing profession has been plagued by an unprecedented decrease in engagement and diminished job satisfaction, particularly following the prolonged tenure of the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to subsequent attrition amidst a staffing crisis. This quantitative predictive correlational study seeks to determine whether proactive and persevering characteristics, professional identity, and passion of nurses are predictors of engagement in a post-COVID healthcare environment. The research was based …
An Investigation Of Anti-Intellectualism Among Nurses, Jamie Davis-Tubbs
An Investigation Of Anti-Intellectualism Among Nurses, Jamie Davis-Tubbs
Dissertations
Anti-intellectualism is often offered as an explanation for irrational actions, especially in the grips of uncertainty. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have uncovered the consequences of anti-intellectualism within the healthcare system. Nurses, the most identifiability trusted healthcare professionals, have been used to illustrate a healthcare paradox regarding COVID-19. The healthcare paradox presents nurses as highly trained healthcare professionals who do not believe in their own science and reject scientific expertise. Furthermore, nursing anti-intellectualism has been used to spread misinformation during a major health crisis. Yet, we do not know the depth in which anti-intellectualism exists within the nursing profession. …

Implementing Faculty Development Modules To Increase Readiness For Addressing Social Determinants Of Health, Implicit Bias And Equity In Course Content, Claudia Ngafeeson
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Implicit bias is viewed as an unconscious and involuntary attitude that lies below the surface of consciousness but can influence behavior, and cognitive processes (Maina et al., 2018). Social determinants of health are considered to be the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age; these circumstances are usually shaped by the distribution of money, power, and resources at global, national, and local levels, which in turns determines the distribution of the value of medical care. Existing literature on implicit bias has been fragmented in different fields such as; cognitive psychology, business ethics, and higher education, but …

Introduction: The determination and aim of education are to make all-round development of the human child. On the contrary to it, the real fact is that education alone is not capable of fulfilling all the aims of man in the modern age. The curriculum, teaching methodology, pattern of education, methods of discipline, teachers and teaching behaviour and methods of doing valuation, etc. also play a major role. There exists competition between the children as well as pressure from parents as well as from peers. In the present world, children do have different levels of anxiety before exams which may vary …
