Cineradiography Of The Temporomandibular Joint : A Research Entity And Diagnostic Modality, L. Albert Lewis

Readily accessible equipment as utilized for cineangiography has been demonstrated to be useful in producing dynamic studies of the temporomandibular joint.

The reproducible studies have been obtained without adaptation of equipment. Methods used in this project were based on principles which have been advocated for the past thirty years for static radiographs of the temporomandibular joints.

Studies were made of a variety of subjects varying in size and joint integrity. Diagnostic views were obtained on all subjects showing normal osseous joint structures and typical joint function via the use of motion picture records. Changes in osseous joint structures were readily …

Allergenicity Of Various Peanut Products As Determined By Rast Inhibition, Julie A. Nordlee, Steve L. Taylor, R. T. Jones, John W. Yunginger

Extracts of 19 different peanut products and peanut oil were tested for their allergenicity by the radioallergosorbent test inhibition assay using a crude peanut extract from raw peanuts as the standard for comparison. Seventeen of the extracts were able to competitively inhibit the binding of serum IgE from peanut-sensitive patients with the solid-phase raw peanut extract. Peanut oil and the extract from hydrolyzed peanut protein did not inhibit binding, which suggests that these products are not allergenic. The peanut hull flour extract showed a slight ability to inhibit binding, suggesting that this product contains minor amounts of the peanut allergen.

Placing A Parent In A Nursing Home: Factors Related To Adult Children's Decisions, Ruth Cordle Hatch

Purpose. The purpose of this study was to identify alternatives and factors considered in the decision to place parents in nursing homes and to Identify feelings, relationships, needs, and satisfaction levels of the adult children involved in the decision. The researcher also sought suggestions of ways adult children's needs might be met.

Procedure. Adult children who were listed as next-of-kin of parents residing in Black Hawk County, Iowa intermediate care nursing homes were sent questionnaires developed by the researcher. Phleborheography: A Correlative Study With Venography, Joseph P. Elliott Jr., John H. Hageman, Ann C. Belanger, Roger F. Smith

The Vascular Laboratory of Henry Ford Hospital has used the Cranley-Grass Phleborheograph (PRG) as the primary noninvasive method to determine the presence or absence of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) in the lower limbs since December 1977. In order to determine its proper role and clinical reliability, we compared the diagnostic accuracy of phleborheography with contrast venography. From December 1977 through December 1978, 483 cases (963 limbs) were successfully examined by PRG. Ofthese, 111 cases (216 limbs) also had contrast venography. Hereditary hemolytic anemia associated with glucose phosphate isomerase (GPI) deficiency was first reported in 1967. Since then, about 30 cases have been reported in the literature; their ages ranged between 1 and 26 years. We present a case of glucose phosphate isomerase deficiency in a 56-year-old woman. Steroid therapy seemed to resolve our patient's acute stage. Since it has not been mentioned previously, further evaluation is necessary. Consideration of this deficiency may be helpful in investigating hemolytic anemia, regardless of the patient's age.

The intensity of the heart sound depends upon: 1) the distensibility of the aortic and pulmonary valves; 2) hemodynamic factors that cause the valves to distend and vibrate; 3) viscosity of the blood and its ability to inhibit diastolic valve motion; 4) the configuration of the aorta, pulmonary artery, and ventricle and the ability of the walls of the great vessels and ventricles to absorb or reflect sound energy; and 5) the capability of sound to be transmitted to the chest wall. A Selective Approach To Bleeding Esophageal Varices, Glyn G. Jamieson, Irwin B. Faris, John Ludbrook

It is possible that the best results of treatment for bleeding esophageal varices will come when a selective approach is used. In patients bleeding acutely and in patients with poor liver function shunt operations should be avoided, and a direct attack on the varices with either sclerosant therapy, percutaneous obliteration, or staple gun gastro-esophageal transsection should be carried out. In patients who have stopped bleeding, or those in whom elective treatment is being undertaken, the best operation at present appears to be selective distal splenorenal shunt.

A computer model of the left ventricular (LV) epicardial surface was developed from Jang’s truncated ellipsoidal model, which has a minor to major axis ratio of 6:10. The model was applied in calculating the area of a segment of the myocardium, jeopardized by an impending occlusion of its associated artery. The endangered segment of the LV muscle was also visualized in different projections by rotations in three space and graphical displays simulating the three dimensions.

Obstetric analgesia and anesthesia is an important concern today. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of analgesia used in labor and delivery on the mother and newborn. The information obtained in this study evaluated the amount, time and types of analgesia and the effects on the mother and the newborn.

Previous research has indicated adverse effects of analgesia and anesthesia on both mother and newborn, but conclusive results have not been obtained. Depressed respiratory function, increased use of oxygen, and low Apgar scores are among the effects reported for the newborn. Decreased uterine function, decreased satisfaction …

Sleep is necessary for physical and psychological restoration of the body. Studies indicate that tissue repair is augmented during sleep, showing that rates of protein synthesis and of mitotic division are higher at times of rest and sleep. Studies evaluating sleep-deprived subjects reveal that after loss of normal sleep, some types of memory and learning processes are impaired. These subjects generally become anxious and irritable, especially after loss of dreaming sleep.

Sleeping medications have been implicated by observers and researchers to be a cause of altered sleep patterns. These medications not only disrupt normal sleep cycles, but their continued use …

The Analysis Of S-Adenosylmethionine And S-Adenosylhomocysteine In Normal And Neoplastic Cells, Kathryn Elizabeth Godburn

Altered patterns of methylation have been shown in both ribosomal and transfer RNA isolated from cancer cells. In contrast to the elevated activity of the methyltransferases responsible for this modification, hypomethylation appears as a general characteristic. The endogenous levels of S-adenosylmethionine and S-adenosylhomocysteine are important in relationship to their role as substrate and product of the transmethylation reaction. The levels of S-adenosylmethionine and S-adenosylhomocysteine were determined using phosphocellulose cation exchange or high pressure liquid chromatography. High voltage paper electrophoresis was used in a modified procedure to directly resolve (³⁵s) labeled S-adenosylmethionine and S-adenosylhomocysteine in small quantities of cell …
