Background: Preoperative anxiety affects 40–80% of surgical patients and is associated with poorer perioperative experiences. Despite evidence linking preoperative anxiety to increase postoperative pain, sleep disturbances, morbidity and delayed recovery, structured anxiety assessment is not routinely integrated into outpatient pre-anesthesia workflows. The Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS) is a validated tool that quantifies patient anxiety and information needs. This quality improvement (QI) project aims to implement APAIS screening in a Pre-Anesthesia Testing (PAT) clinic and evaluate its feasibility, workflow integration, and acceptability.

Background:

Pediatric skeletal tumors range from benign to malignant and require multimodal imaging for accurate diagnosis. Recognizing key features enables early detection, guides management, identifies underlying syndromes, and improves outcomes. This presentation provides an educational overview of pediatric tumor evaluation.

Methods:
We conducted a focused review of peer-reviewed literature and representative pediatric imaging studies to outline the radiologic characteristics of common benign and malignant bone tumors in children. Core imaging patterns, diagnostic challenges, and modality-specific advantages were synthesized to create a practical interpretive framework for radiologists.

Maternal allergies are a prevalent yet overlooked category of gestational disease. Pregnancy is characterized by a Th2 dominant immunological environment, and because many allergic diseases also rely on Th2 cytokines and IgE-mediated pathways, allergy during pregnancy may impact symptoms and influence maternal and fetal outcomes.

Anatomical variations in the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN), namely extra-laryngeal terminal bifurcation and non-recurrent inferior laryngeal nerve, are known risk factors for RLN injury during surgery and represent a considerable jeopardy for iatrogenic damage like vocal cord paralysis. Background: As liver transplantation expands to include marginal donor organs, technologies such as the TransMedics Organ Care System (OCS) offer the potential to improve graft viability and clinical outcomes. However, limited institution-level evidence exists evaluating the cost-outcomes balance of OCS use in Donation-After-Circulatory-Death (DCD) liver transplantation. Major League Soccer (MLS) and the English Premier League (EPL) differ substantially in geographic footprint, travel requirements, competition structure, and scheduling. These structural differences may influence player injury risk, yet no study has directly compared injury incidence between the two leagues within the same competitive season. In 2024, MLS introduced a centralized, standardized injury-reporting system that improved transparency and created a unique opportunity for direct comparison with the EPL.

Background and Purpose: Mercury is a pervasive environmental contaminant, and human epidemiologic studies have linked chronic low-level exposure to increased autoimmune disease-risk. Dysregulated lymphocyte activation and impaired signaling tolerance are central mechanisms in human autoimmunity. Protein phosphorylation governs lymphocyte differentiation and function, alterations in phosphoproteomic networks may represent a signature of immune disruption. This study evaluates how low dose mercury exposure modifies B and T cell abundance and intracellular signaling patterns in BALB/c and Diversity Outbred (DO) mice.

Robotic-assisted total knee arthroplasty (RA-TKA) is increasingly utilized to improve component alignment and soft-tissue balance, yet its impact on clinically meaningful outcomes in large real-world populations remains uncertain. Robotic-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy (RARP) is the predominant surgical approach for localized prostate cancer in the United States and over 50% of RARP are performed as ambulatory or same-day discharge encounters. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) assess symptoms, function, and overall health from a patient perspective. Although PROM engagement has been studied across orthopaedics, limited work has examined both participation and completion specifically in joint replacement. This study evaluated associations between sociodemographic factors and PROM participation and completion among total joint arthroplasty patients.

Background: Military personnel and veterans are at increased risk of lower-limb amputation, often due to combat-related trauma such as improvised explosive devices (IEDs), as well as secondary factors including tobacco use, peripheral artery disease, and diabetes. This study systematically reviews and compares lower-limb prosthetic technologies in military personnel and veterans, focusing on functional outcomes, mobility, and patient satisfaction.

Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using PubMed MeSH terms to identify studies examining lower-limb prosthetic use and outcomes among military personnel and veterans. The final MeSH-based search yielded 27 results.

Background:
The KELIM score, derived from CA-125 kinetics, reflects intrinsic tumor chemosensitivity in ovarian cancer. This retrospective study evaluated whether KELIM predicts clinical outcomes in patients receiving bevacizumab in a real-world setting.

Methods:
Twenty-four patients with advanced ovarian cancer treated with platinum-based chemotherapy and bevacizumab at a tertiary center in Detroit, MI, were included. KELIM scores were calculated from CA-125 values during the first 100 treatment days (www.biomarker-kinetics.org) and classified as favorable (≥1.0) or unfavorable (< 1.0). Progression-free survival (PFS) was measured from diagnosis to recurrence, and overall survival (OS) from diagnosis to last contact or death. Surgical outcomes, debulking approach, PARP inhibitor use, and survival status were analyzed descriptively.

Results:

Hormonal birth control is the most common form of reversible contraception. In the U.S., pharmacy data show oral contraceptive pill prescriptions declined 25.6% from March 2021 to October 2023. Meanwhile, patients increasingly seek health information on social media. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States, with screening shown to significantly reduce mortality. However, incarcerated individuals experience substantially lower CRC screening rates and often present with more advanced disease than non-incarcerated individuals. Our project’s objective was to review the state of CRC screening in U.S. carceral settings, along with exploring possible alternatives to address the substantial disparity in CRC screening rates experienced by the incarcerated population.

Laser thermal therapy (LITT) is a minimally invasive treatment for intracranial lesions with success dependent on precise placement of the laser probe. The Robotic Surgical Assistant (ROSA) ONE Brain robotic platform is one stereotactic method that is used to aid this process.

This study examined the accuracy of LITT probe placement utilizing the ROSA robot, comparing entry distance, target distance, and entry angle errors across two major LITT platforms: Neuroblate (Monteris Medical) and Visualase Systems.

African American (AA) women have lower adherence to breast cancer screening guidelines, which may contribute to delayed diagnoses and reduced survival rates. These disparities are often influenced by limited access to quality healthcare and persistent inequities faced within Michigan. With Detroit's population being 77% AA, examining studies focused on the experiences of Black women within urban healthcare networks is essential to understanding the connections between demographic, socioeconomic factors, and breast cancer outcomes.
