Purpose (What): This project aims to describe how transformational leadership by an ICU nurse leader led to the creation of the clinical coach program. This program supports and retains newly graduated nurses and experienced nurses transitioning into the ICU through collaboration with experienced preceptors.

Relevance/Significance (Why): In 2022, hospital leadership charged the ICU nurse manager with stabilizing the ICU workforce by reducing the reliance on costly temporary travel staff, a priority due to turnover during the COVID pandemic. Increased utilization and prolonged dwell times of indwelling urinary catheters (IUCs) are directly related to the risk of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs)- the fifth most common type of healthcare associated infection (HAI). The National Health and Safety Network (NHSN) uses the Standardized Utilization Ratio (SUR) metric to measure and compare device utilization in acute care hospitals across the nation. The national target SUR benchmark is 1.0, and a SUR under 1.0 indicates less device usage than NHSN predicts on an inpatient unit. In 2022 a Neuro Med-Surg unit experienced an overall SUR of 1.047 with 2 CAUTIs observed. A …

Background: A stay at the hospital is full of interruptions from family visitors, lab draws, hearing screens, nurses and doctors, social workers, and environmental services. All these interruptions during the postpartum stay negatively affect parents and newborns by interrupting breastfeeding, sleep, and family bonding time. Evidence from AWHONN (Association of Women's Health Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses) research, in the articles referenced, demonstrates overwhelming support of Quiet Time in the Postpartum period. Quiet Time has been shown to improve exclusive breastfeeding rates, decrease emotional and physical exhaustion, enhance shared decision making and set realistic expectations, increase nurse satisfaction, decrease nursing stress …

Significance & Background

Falls and fall-related injuries impact patients' health outcomes and are the most commonly reported adverse event in hospitals. Patient falls also affect reimbursement rates and can increase length of stay by about 6.3 days and increase undue patient harm. An increase of patients falls on the medical and surgical oncology acute care units have caused undue physical harm, increased moral distress, mental fatigue, and burnout in nurses; as well as placing financial burdens on the healthcare system.
