Persons in the Nutrition for the Elderly program in Barren River Area Development District in Kentucky and personal care residents at Lakeview Nursing Home, Morgantown, Kentucky, and Glasgow Rest Home, Glasgow, Kentucky participated I this study on a voluntary basis. The population consisted of an intact sample of sixty-eight persons: forty-six personal care residents (PC residents) and twenty-two Nutrition for the Elderly participants (NE participants). The Ne participants and Pc residents were compared to determine which received the best nutritional care. Native peoples of the New World, including Amerindians and admixed Latin Americans such as Mexican-Americans, are highly susceptible to diseases of the gallbladder. These include cholesterol cholelithiasis (gallstones) and its complications, as well as cancer of the gallbladder. Although there is clearly some necessary dietary or other environmental risk factor involved, the pattern of disease prevalence is geographically associated with the distribution of genes of aboriginal Amerindian origin, and levels of risk generally correspond to the degree of Amerindian admixture. This pattern differs from that generally associated with Westernization, which suggests a gene-environment interaction, and that within an admixed population …

Developing An Integrated Natural Language Database For Gastrointestinal Disease, Peter J. Feczko, Laurens V. Ackerman, Robert D. Halpert, Stuart M. Simms

Using a mainframe computer connected to the Henry Ford Hospital computer network, we developed a database for gastrointestinal disease which includes data from radiologic and endoscopic gastrointestinal examinations, along with corresponding pathologic diagnosis. Because of the large volume of procedures in our practice, we developed several unique features for our system. The user enters data by responding to a series of question-and-answer sets constructed by the clinical staff, who do not have experience in computer programming. Data is stored in a hierarchical format using natural language. Boolean logic is used to retrieve data so that different procedures can be correlated …

This article reports on the formation of a Radiology Information System Consortium (RISC) by 13 hospitals and medical centers in the United States, including Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, and the cooperation between this consortium and a major manufacturer of computers and software. Computer-Assisted Methods For Design Optimization Of Cardiac Bioprosthetic Valves, Mohamed S. Hamid, Hani N. Sabbah, Paul D. Stein

Excessive mechanical stresses on valvular leaflets are considered an important factor in the degeneration of cardiac porcine bioprosthetic valves. This study describes a computer-assisted numerical model of a bioprosthetic valve which estimates the magnitude and distribution of leaflet stresses. The study also describes our initial attempts to determine the influence of stent height upon leaflet stresses. Whereas lowering stent heights has been suggested to improve hemodynamics in the bioprosthetic valve region, results indicate that an increase in leaflet stresses can accompany reductions of stent height.

Obtaining appropriate information in a timely fashion in medical practice has always been a burden for the practitioner. In a large hospital which undertakes major computer projects, this burden is intensified because information is not always available in a form directly usable by the physician or support personnel; it is now accumulated on diverse magnetic media where it is moved and processed as electronic pulses. This paper describes a solution which freely allows continued automation at different rates throughout a large hospital while expediting the movement of information where it is needed in a form understandable by the recipient.

Intracerebral Hemorrhage After Carotid Endarterectomy, José Biller, Andrew C. Hayes, Fred N. Littooy, William H. Baker

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a rare complication of carotid endarterectomy (CE). In our multicenter series of 1,180 CE (Baker-Littooy), three ICH occurred, of which two were fatal. One patient was receiving anticoagulants because ofa prosthetic aortic valve; another had rupture of a known ipsilateral intracranial aneurysm. Both occurred more than six weeks postoperatively. The third patient, who was hypertensive, had a nonfatal ipsilateral thalamic hemorrhage on the third postoperative day. Though these three patients represent only 0.25% of our series, they constitute 12% of our total strokes. ICH constitutes the largest percentage of nontechnically-related strokes and noncardiac deaths after CE.

The Vascular Registry of Henry Ford Hospital was initiated by one of the authors in 1957 to provide a consistent and accurate method of documenting and correlating the clinical results of the treatment of occlusive and aneurysmal arterial diseases. Data collection for each patient includes demographic information, treatment of clinical problems, and followup observations. Initially, the system consisted of keypunch cards and eventually magnetic tape processing. By 1980, it was necessary to further update the system because of the increase in patient volume, the need to minimize manual manipulations, and the demand for research data. This article describes our experience in the development and implementation of a computerized information system specifically designed for a Division of Nephrology and Hypertension. Specific issues related to planning and implementation are discussed, and potential pitfalls in setting up such a system are addressed. The combination of a mainframe and a miniframe as integral parts of the system and the development of peripheral support in specific applications using a personal microcomputer are also described. The important area of user/computer interface and of user motivation is discussed in the light of the experience acquired while implementing the current system.

Cardiac Papillary Fibroelastoma: A Source Of Coronary Artery Emboli And Myocardial Infarction, Gerald Fine, Shoba R. Pai

Cardiac papillary fibroelastomas, although generally small and asymptomatic, have been suspected of being responsible for cerebral accidents, angina, and sudden death. The diagnosis of tumor embolization, considered in a number of cases, has been based on circumstantial evidence in all instances except for one case of sudden death due to embolism to the left anterior descending coronary artery. In all other cases, angina and sudden death have been related to a ball valve-type obstruction of a coronary ostium by tumor. The present case documents tumor embolism to peripheral right coronary arteries with associated, clinically silent myocardial changes.

A Comparison Of Enamel Detachments After Debonding Between Unitek's "Dynalok" Bracket And A Foil-Mesh Bracket: A Scanning Electron Microscope Study, Robert E. Meister

The intent of this paper was to: 1. Evaluate the mode of adhesive failure when debonding both flexible and rigid base orthodontic brackets. 2. Evaluate the bracket bases for enamel detachments. 3. Measure the enamel detachments.

After preforming shear test on flexible and rigid base orthodontic brackets mounted to extracted human teeth it was determined that failure occurred at the enamel/adhesive interface 30% of the time, at the bracket/adhesive interface 10% of the time and a combination of these 60% of the time for both groups.

Age-Related Changes Of Neurites In Meissner Corpuscles Of Diabetic, Vicky R. Ras

This thesis is based on a qualitative and quantitative study of the neural component of Meissner corpuscles of diabetic and non-diabetic mice. Age-related changes were also documented in these mechanoreceptors. Corpuscles from forty-six diabetic mice and forty-six non-diabetic mice ranging from 2.5 to 17 months old were studied. Forepaw index digital pads were formalin-fixed and frozen-sectioned parallel to each digit and perpendicular to the skin. Serial sections were then silver-impregnated to allow light microscopic examination of the neurites in the corpuscles.

Neurites became more coarse, tortuous, branched, varicose, and thus more complex until middle age. Corpuscle size appeared greatest at …

The Effects Of Tri-O-Cresyl Phosphate On 2',3'-Cyclicnucleotide-3'-Phosphohydrolase Activity In Neural And Non-Neural Tissue Of The Rat, Mark K. Schlager

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

A total of 44 Long-Evans rats received 5.7 g/kg tri-O-cresyl phosphate (TOCP) orally every 3 days for 6 days. A second group of 13 rats received 4.6 g/kg orally every 3 days for 6 days. Animals were administered atropine sulfate (10 mg/kg) intraperitoneally every 6 hours or as needed to alleviate cholinergic symptoms. Ten control animals were given corn oil orally. Eight rats (18%) survived the 5.7 g/kg dose regimen and 5 rats (38%) survived the 4.6 g/kg dose regimen. Surviving rats were killed at 30-33 days post-dose. Signs of delayed neuropathy included ataxia and motor impairment.
