The development of decalcification around orthodontic brackets and bands, commonly called white spot lesions (WSLs), is often observed in patients with poor oral hygiene during treatment (Behnan et al., 2010, Rodgers et al., 2010). In many instances, these WSLs continue to be visible after the removal of fixed appliances and after natural remineralization. The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the effectiveness of two treatment modalities, resin infiltration (RI) and Casein Phosphopeptide Amorphous Calcium Phosphate (CPP-ACP), at improving the light reflectivity and thus the appearance of WSLs using spectrophotometric analysis. Introduction: Digital scanners and software may be used to measure mesial-distal (MD) tooth width for orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. Although there have been many studies performed on different digital scanners, accuracy of mesial-distal tooth measurements using the Ortho Insight 3D scanner and its software (Motionview Software LLC) has not been reported. The objective of this study was to quantitatively evaluate, via CBCT, the dental and osseous effects of patients who had completed comprehensive orthodontic treatment with rapid maxillary expansion (RME) in conjunction with Ricketts prescription brackets. Thirty consecutive patients (16 males, 14 females; mean age = 13.9  1.9 years) who required RME as part of their orthodontic treatment and had pre-RME (T1), post-RME (T2) and final orthodontic (T3) CBCT images were included in the study. Purpose: The objective of this study was to determine how apical, coronal and occlusal arch forms change following orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances and to establish a base for future studies. Apical periodontitis is the most common pathological process in the periapical region. Disciplined clinical and radiographic evaluations and appropriate diagnostic tests can detect lesions related to apical periodontitis. Aside from this, lesions mimicking pulp-related pathology but unrelated to pulpal infection and necrosis are occasionally discovered in the periapical region. The objective of this study was two-fold: (1) to determine the prevalence of diverse periapically located pathological entities, and (2) to apply that information to evaluate the rationale for routine submission of surgically obtained tissue for histological examination and diagnosis. Remarkable Resilience Of Teeth (How Are Teeth So Brittle Yet So Resilient), Paul J. Constantino

Tooth enamel is inherently weak, with fracture toughness comparable with glass, yet it is remarkably resilient, surviving millions of functional contacts over a lifetime. We propose a microstructural mechanism of damage resistance, based on observations from ex situ loading of human and sea otter molars (teeth with strikingly similar structural features). Section views of the enamel implicate tufts, hypomineralized crack-like defects at the enamel–dentin junction, as primary fracture sources. We report a stabilization in the evolution of these defects, by ‘‘stress shielding’’ from neighbors, by inhibition of ensuing crack extension from prism interweaving (decussation), and by self-healing. The purpose was to determine whether orthognathic surgery or camouflage is a better alternative for observable esthetic improvement in borderline Class III surgical/orthodontic patients. This study will aid the orthodontist in recommending treatment options to enhance profile attractiveness of borderline Class III surgical/orthodontic patients. What has yet to be quantitatively measured is the duration of time that a subconscious, resting tongue posture is maintained and whether such posture differs among various craniofacial morphologies. Introduction: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans may be used to measure mesial-distal (MD) tooth width for orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. Purpose: The objective of this study was to determine if MD tooth measurements from unsegemented CBCT scans in the axial, sagittal, and coronal planes or from a panoramic reconstruction correlate and agree with respective measurements made on study models. Background: Dental caries is the most common chronic disease of children ages 6 to 11. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 41% of the children in this age group experience decay in their primary teeth. Since 1980 the number of overweight children ages 6 to 11 has doubled. Childhood obesity is currently the most prevalent nutritional condition of children in the U.S.

Purpose: The purpose of this observational study was to determine if there is an association between childhood dental caries and childhood obesity. The study also explored the effects of diet and other covariates.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to record first impressions elicited by photographs of orthodontic patients before and after treatment to test the hypothesis that after treatment patients will elicit a more positive first impression.

Methods and Materials: Before (Tl) and After (T2) photographs of six orthodontic patients equally divided by gender and standardized for background facial attractiveness were selected. Three different malocclusions were represented: 1) Class 1 crowded, 2) Class 11 div 1, and 3) Class 111. 108 college students rated each photographed patient on three attributes: physical attractiveness, intelligence and social desirability. Immediate Tooth Replacement With Subepithelial Connective Tissue Graft Using Platform Switching Implants, Seunghwan Chung

This case series evaluated the facial gingival stability following immediate tooth replacement in conjunction with subepithelial connective tissue graft in the esthetic zone. Implant success rate and peri-implant tissue response were also reported.

Ten patients (6 males, 4 females), with a mean age of 52.1 (range = 22.7 to 67.1) years, underwent immediate implant placement and provisionalization with SCTG and were evaluated clinically and radiographically at pre-surgery (T0), immediately after immediate tooth replacement and SCTG (T1), 3-months (T2), 6-months (T3), and 12-months (T4) after surgery. Introduction: Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) patients have increased risk of morbidity and mortality. Early diagnosis may reduce morbidity and mortality. Prediction of OSA from imaging may help to identify OSA patients earlier in life. CBCT can be used for OSA diagnostic imaging due to its three-dimensional (3D) visualization of the upper airway and craniofacial complex. Magnification associated with conventional 2D radiography is eliminated with CBCT, and radiation to the patient is significantly less than previous modalities used to measure craniofacial & airway measurements associated with OSA. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine if T1-weighted 3D magnetic resonance images performed at 3.0 Tesla could be used to conduct routine orthodontic cephalometric analysis.

Methods: Three cranial imaging methods were compared using sixteen non-growing subjects (10 male and 6 female) who were not claustrophobic, did not have any metallic restorations on the distal of first molars, had no medical implants and the female subjects were not pregnant. The purpose of this study was to characterize and analyze the heterotopic bone regenerate which formed following implantation of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) and to determine by epi-illumination, x-ray photometry and histology, if there is increased and sustained osteogenic potential present with distraction osteogenesis of this heterotopic bone. While many previous studies have documented the osteogenic potential of BMP-2, no study to date has shown the results of application of force on this ectopic bone.
