Digital Media, Truth Decay, And The Inversion Of Trust In Science, Nicholas Mosca

Digital media enables the rapid dissemination of scientific oral health information from subject experts to the public. However, it also poses significant risks by facilitating the dissemination of misinformation and disinformation, thereby blurring the boundaries between truth and fallacy. This paper characterizes the decay of scientific truth in policymaking, characterized by increased public debate about scientific facts and a decline in confidence in science. It describes psychological mechanisms, such as confirmation bias and motivated reasoning, and social dynamics, including algorithm-driven content distribution and echo chambers, that accelerate the circulation of misleading science information. Increased access to fluoride varnish and expanded health and wellness campaign is expected to improve oral health of children and adults. The end of 2024 brought two new laws that specifically affect dentistry. The first such law, Chapter 457 of the Laws of 2024, took effect on Nov. 15. It amended Section 6608 of the New York State Education Law to allow registered dental assistants to apply topical fluoride varnish. Topical fluoride varnish had previously been limited to dentists and dental hygienists. It also amended Section 6902(2) of the Education Law to allow licensed practical nurses (LPNs) to apply topical …

Through critical appraisal, the author of this article answers the clinical question: Is Oil-Pulling Useful in Treating Periodontal Disease? Examining the potential utility of oil-pulling as a treatment for periodontal disease and comparing it to conventional periodontal therapies. The study conducted an evidence-based search using various databases and keywords related to oil-pulling, periodontal disease, and oral health. The number of people living with HIV (PLHIV) has been increasing since the first known case in the early 1980s. However, PLHIV can also experience comorbidities, such as health anxiety. In the oral cavity, anxiety is often associated with the etiology of parafunctional habits.
