10-Minute Ebd: Charcoal Toothpastes Pose Risks With Few Benefits, Kelly Lemke Dds, Ms
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
The rising popularity of charcoal toothpaste, fueled by social media influencers and claims of teeth-whitening benefits, prompts an investigation into its effectiveness and potential risks. The article explores the evidence through a PICO (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome) question focused on patients seeking whiter teeth. A literature review reveals limited scientific validation for the cosmetic or health benefits of charcoal-containing oral products. The abrasiveness of charcoal toothpaste poses risks, potentially leading to enamel loss, dentin exposure, and hypersensitivity. Lack of fluoride in many charcoal toothpaste formulations raises concerns about caries risk. The article emphasizes the importance of dental providers conducting due …
Dental Students' Perceptions Of Dental Hygienists' Education And Scope Of Practice, Cynthia Metzger
Dental Students' Perceptions Of Dental Hygienists' Education And Scope Of Practice, Cynthia Metzger
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Oral health is strongly correlated to systemic health in the United States. Dental professionals play a significant role in addressing the oral health and prevention of disease for populations in the United States. Because many areas in the United States lack access to dental care, the federal government considers dental hygienists part of the solution. It is now paying attention to restrictive dental hygiene scope of practice rules in each state. State dental boards, comprised mainly of dentists, make these rules based on their perception of dental hygienists' lack of education. This study explored fourth-year dental students' perceptions of the …

Oral Manifestations Of Covid-19, Ibeth Erazo
Oral Manifestations Of Covid-19, Ibeth Erazo
Publications and Research
Some oral manifestations have been observed in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, there is still a question about whether these lesions are due to coronavirus infection or secondary manifestations resulting from patient's stress, medications, and/or other related immunosuppressive factors and systemic conditions or by the actions of opportunistic infections brought by other viruses, bacteria, and fungi in the oral cavity. There is growing evidence that angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), the main host cell receptor of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is highly expressed on the cells of the oral mucosal epithelia and of the salivary glands, …

Care And Maintenance Of Dental Restorations, Ibeth Erazo
Publications and Research
Contributing to the longevity of the restoration by minimizing the effects of surface corrosion, maintaining the esthetic appearance and the smooth surface characterization, and contributing to gingival health by lessening the potential for plaque retention are the principal reasons for taking care of dental restorations. However, during oral hygiene routine procedures and prevention treatments, these desired effects are not always achieved. In many cases, the restorative materials are not identified in a patient’s record leading to damage during oral hygiene performance by dental professionals. Therefore, it is important to be able to recognize the different restorative materials and employ the …

Disparities In Oral Health: Socioeconomic Status And Policies To Increase Access To Primary Dental Care, Mckenzie Nutter
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
Primary dental care is a patient-centered service consisting of routine dental checkups. The oral cavity is the first point of entrance to the body for many harmful pathogens. Therefore, primary dental care is essential to not only prevent and treat conditions in the mouth, but to also reduce the number of systemic diseases in the rest of the body. However, people with higher incomes or wealth have increased access to primary dental care. People with low socioeconomic status have decreased access to primary dental care, at least in part due to difficulties in paying for separate dental insurance. Disparities in …

The therapeutic potential of cannabis has been harnessed for thousands of years yet the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has still not approved cannabis as a safe or effective drug. The FDA has, however, approved the manufacturing of pharmaceutical drugs, which contain a “synthetic version of a substance that is present in the marijuana” and other compounds that mimic its action. A search of the US National Library of Medicine and National Institute of Health for keywords “CBD” and “Periodontitis” together yields only 2 publications. Although the current State and Federal regulations on the use of cannabis for …
Replacing A Single Tooth: Single Implant Vs. Three Unit Bridge, Ibeth Erazo, Aneeza Hussain
Replacing A Single Tooth: Single Implant Vs. Three Unit Bridge, Ibeth Erazo, Aneeza Hussain
Publications and Research
There are more than two options for restoring a single tooth but our research includes a three-unit bridge and a single-tooth implant as the main options. In this paper, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of these methods and the factors that must be considered when choosing between them for the replacement of a single tooth. Although in some cases a three-unit bridge is the most appropriate choice, implants have the advantage of allowing preservation of the integrity of sound teeth adjacent to the edentulous area. Many factors must be considered when choosing between a three-unit bridge and an implant …

Odontomas are one of the most frequently found odontogenic tumors that consist of dental tissues. Odontomas have been classified into two types: compound and complex odontomas. They are usually discovered on routine radiographic examination. In rare cases, the odontoma erupt into the oral cavity, called an erupted odontoma. The first case was published in 1980, and since then, there have been not more than 50 cases being reported in the literature. Most of the reported cases are erupted complex odontoma. This case report represents a rare case of an erupted compound odontoma in a young patient who came with the …

Cancer prevalence in the United States is significant, with an estimated 40% of the population experiencing this diagnosis at some point in their lives. In 2020 alone, 1,806,590 new cancer cases were projected, encompassing 53,260 cases involving oral and oropharyngeal malignancies. Amidst barriers like financial constraints and irregular dental visits (highlighted by a 2014 American Dental Association survey indicating that 32.3% of the general population avoids yearly dentist appointments), patients battling cancer often encounter not just routine dental needs, but the intricate challenges arising from their malignancy and treatments. Dental professionals, pivotal in orchestrating optimal treatment strategies for cancer patients, …
