Until recently, artificial intelligence was seen as science fiction. Now, it is interwoven into all aspects of our lives, including our dental practice. Cloning may be the next futuristic fantasy to permeate our consciousness. According to Leslie G. Biesecker, M.D., director and NIH Distinguished Investigator, Center for Precision Health Research, “Cloning, as it relates to genetics and genomics, involves using scientific methods to make identical, or virtually identical, copies of an organism, cell or DNA sequence.” As the cloning process and other bioengineering techniques advance, one can only wonder how and when they will impact the dental landscape.

On July 22, the New York State Department of Health finally adopted an entire set of new regulations covering all aspects of ionizing radiation. Contained in Article 16 of Title 10 of the Official Compilation of Codes, Rules and Regulations of the State of New York (10 NYCRR), the new regulations repealed and replaced the old Article 16. It is important to note that the new regulations are in effect only in counties outside of New York City. On May 3, 2023, Gov. Hochul signed into law, as part of the enacted New York State Budget, a new Article 45-A of the New York State Public Health Law known as the “Material Transactions Law.” The law took effect on Aug. 1, 2023, but it awaited promised guidance on its application and enforcement from the New York State Department of Health. In March, adhering to its usual torpor, the Department of Health finally issued such guidance. The law basically requires reporting certain transactions, like practice acquisitions, mergers and sales, to the Department of Health.

Increased access to fluoride varnish and expanded health and wellness campaign is expected to improve oral health of children and adults. The end of 2024 brought two new laws that specifically affect dentistry. The first such law, Chapter 457 of the Laws of 2024, took effect on Nov. 15. It amended Section 6608 of the New York State Education Law to allow registered dental assistants to apply topical fluoride varnish. Purpose: To determine the impact of a mandatory COVID-19 testing policy on visit no- show rates. Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review at Bellevue Hospital’s Pediatric Dental Clinic, comparing no-show rates and dental work completed before and during this policy. Results: We assessed a total of 812 scheduled appointments. After the policy, we found no statistical difference between no-show rates, more quadrants of dental work completed per visit (P<0.001), and shorter interval times between appointments (P<0.001). Conclusion: The policy did not increase visit no-show rates. We also found more treatment completed in a shorter timeframe.

Cannabis is no longer an illicit drug but rather a drug whose use has dramatically increased because its recreational use is largely legal, and its use in medicine has demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of many difficult to treat disorders including chronic pain, spasticity, and several cancer related problems to name but a few.

This change represents several new challenges for dentists. Chronic cannabis use can increase the prevalence and severity of periodontal disease and dental caries.
