Superior Mesenteric Artery (SMA) Syndrome is an infrequent vascular compression disorder, characterized predominantly by the extrinsic obstruction of the third part of the duodenum by the SMA, leading to a spectrum of gastrointestinal symptoms. While most commonly associated with rapid weight loss and anatomical variations, its occurrence in the context of adjacent malignancies remains exceedingly rare and clinically significant.

Here I detail a compelling case of a 49-year-old male, initially presenting with nonspecific symptoms of intermittent abdominal pain and vomiting. Oral Manifestations Of Metastatic Diseases: A Clinical And Histologic Analysis Of 7 Cases, Zeming Zheng Dds, Elizabeth Philipone Dmd

Metastatic diseases comprise 1-3% of malignant oral neoplasms with nearly one-third of patients being unaware of having a primary cancer1-4,9. This retrospective analysis identified all oral lesions diagnosed as metastatic disease in the CDM Department of Oral Pathology’s oral biopsy database from 2015-2020 and reported on patient demographics, clinical presentation and diagnosis, origin of the primary, and whether the patient had known history of the disease. From 17,500 total cases, 7 cases were identified as metastatic disease and described in detail. Clinicians’ recognition and awareness of these lesions’ often evasive, ambiguous oral presentations may help facilitate diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis.

Leadership roles must incorporate representation from all involved individuals for the resulting decision-making process to reflect the interests and expertise of a diverse organization. Many resources have rightly focused on developing historically underrepresented racial and ethnic (HURE) leaders. Though numbers of Black and Hispanic dental school deans have increased, more work is needed for these and other HURE groups such as American Indians. Asians are not classified as HURE. As an aggregated group they have robust presence in the dental workforce in North America, the United Kingdom and Australia. The assumption is they are fine, so the group is ignored. …

Childhood cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation, are essential but have significant side effects on growth, development, and oral health. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common sexually transmitted infection linked to oropharyngeal and cervical cancers, particularly through HPV16. While the HPV vaccine has proven effective in reducing cancer and genital warts, its uptake remains limited due to low public and professional awareness. Dental hygienists, with their focus on preventive care, can play a key role in promoting HPV vaccination. This literature review explores how increased HPV education for hygienists can improve patient outcomes. By advocating for vaccination, providing patient education, offering guidance, and possibly administering the vaccine in dental offices, hygienists could significantly help reduce HPV-related cancers. The connection of periodontal disease and systemic erythematous lupus connects a multitude of inflammation symptoms. The body is plagued with consistent states of inflammation due to the autoimmune defense against the body's healthy tissues. This coincides with the inflammatory response produced by periodontal diseases. Studies indicate a strong correlation between the presence of periodontal disease in individuals suffering from SLE. Those with lupus are more likely to also have a greater incidence of oral characteristics that contribute to periodontal disease. School-entry requirements are one proven strategy to increase vaccination rates among children and youth and reduce the burden of HPV-related cancer. This study investigated community perceptions of an HPV vaccine school-entry mandate in Virginia and the consequences of a low threshold exemption option included in the legislation. Purpose: Regular assessment of the dental workforce is essential to improve the population's oral health. This analysis aimed to understand the trends in the distribution of dentists and dental hygienists (DHs) in Virginia.

Methods: Annual survey data (2013-2022) of dentists and DHs from the Virginia Department of Health Professions Healthcare Workforce Data Center was used to examine the trends in provider distribution by age, gender, race/ethnicity, and geography across Virginia.

Results: In 2022, there were 5,720 dentists and 5,290 DH licensees in Virginia. In the dentist workforce, there was a high representation of those aged ≥60 years …

The HPV vaccine has the potential to prevent nearly 92% of HPV-related cancer cases, yet its uptake remains suboptimal. While well-documented barriers to HPV vaccine uptake include inadequate knowledge and lack of provider recommendation, religious preferences have emerged as another crucial factor influencing vaccination decisions. This study examined the interrelatedness of religion, beliefs, and HPV vaccination uptake among children among Catholic, Evangelical, and Mainline Protestant parents. To address STIs, one rural county public school district developed a series of Family Life Programs to educate pre-teens about pertinent health information. The Schooling Cancer Program (SCP) was developed in partnership with the local Cancer Research and Resource Center to raise awareness about cancer risk factors including HPV-related cancers and HPV prevention methods. Purpose Disaster victim identification (DVI) service requires knowledge, confidence, and an attitude (KCA) of readiness. The purpose of this study was to assess allied dental students’ perceived KCA regarding DVI skills and topics.

Methods A convenience sample of senior dental hygiene students (n=27) and senior dental assistant students (n=14) were recruited by email then presented mismatched simulated antemortem (AM) and postmortem (PM) bitewing radiographs and asked to indicate correct matches. Collectively, participants made 205 radiographic matches and indicated 205 degrees of certainty binarily as “positive” or “possible” (one per match). Presentation summary: The speakers focused on signs and symptoms of TMD that may be familiar and many that are commonly overlooked. This insight provides an opportunity to better identify and treat patients suffering from TMD. Various treatment methodologies were discussed with an emphasis on the concept of neuromuscular dentistry. Neuromuscular treatment of TMD involves identifying the mandibular position that corresponds to relaxed muscles of the anterior temporalis, masseters, and sternocleidomastoids. The North Dakota school-based sealant program (SEAL!ND) prioritizes providing preventive oral health care to underserved students by targeting schools with 45% or greater of their students enrolled in the free and reduced fee school lunch program (these are considered qualifying schools). Although schools with a larger proportion of youth who are from lower-income households are prioritized by federal funding, additional schools participate and receive care from local dental providers (these are referred to as non-qualifying). During the 2022-23 school year, 58 schools participated in SEAL!ND; 40 qualifying schools (Q) and 18 non-qualifying (NQ); 55 of the 58 schools had two …

Objective: To evaluate the root dentine microhardness after using calcium hydroxide (Ca (OH)2) intracanal medicament. Materials and methods: Forty single-rooted teeth were sectioned at the cemento-enamel junction level and the root canals were prepared till apical size of #30. The prepared teeth were divided into 2 groups (n=20): no medicament (control) group and Ca (OH)2 group. After seven days, medicaments were removed using standardized volume of irrigation.
