This article highlights the role of the MDA Foundation in providing opportunities for professional development and expanding the impact of dentists' careers. Assessing Correlation Of Dental Health And Appalachian Culture, Samantha G. Cheek

Proper dental health is crucial for overall well-being, yet access to dental care remains a significant challenge in rural Appalachia. This study examines the relationship between Appalachian cultural identity, fatalistic beliefs, and dental health. Using survey data from 20 participants at dental offices in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the study assessed correlations between Appalachian identity, fatalism, and self-reported dental health. Results indicate a high prevalence of dental health issues (95% reported significant problems), with 70% lacking dental insurance. However, correlations between Appalachian identity, fatalism, and dental health were not statistically significant. Findings suggest that while cultural factors play a role in healthcare …

Premature loss of a primary molar can occur due to a multitude of reasons, including caries, infection, and trauma. When this occurs and restoration of the affected primary tooth is not possible, the AAPD recognizes space maintenance as a “Best Practice” to prevent loss of arch length, width, and perimeter after extraction. However, reports suggest that with proper intercuspation of first permanent molars, space loss from premature loss of a primary molar is minimal and a space maintainer in that area may not be needed. Due to the anti-inflammatory effect, Manuka honey could be a promising alternative remedy for many medical conditions, including xerostomia. Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate and assess the oral surgery needs in a pediatric hospital dental clinic at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. Methods: Following IRB approval, appointments over a 6-month time-period were reviewed and recorded when a referral was placed to an oral surgeon. The reason for referral, patient age and medical history were recorded and analyzed. Results: Half of the patients needing oral and maxillofacial procedures were between the ages of 8-10 years old. Longitudinal data in real-world settings are frequently found to be heterogeneous and exhibit intricate spatio-temporal dependence structures. Analyzing such complex data to obtain reliable estimation while quantifying uncertainty necessitates using sophisticated Bayesian methodology. In this work, we present novel Bayesian methods developed to address these challenges. We often observe heterogeneity in longitudinal data, where the mean and variance for certain profiles meaningfully differs from the rest. Some profiles may also exhibit outliers at a limited number of measurements. Using a standard mixed effects model, which assumes homogeneity, can lead to overestimating the residual variance and inefficient estimation. In this work, …

Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a low-intensity light therapy that uses non-ionizing forms of energy to induce a directed cellular response. Prior work has investigated the effects of blue light exposure at energy densities ranging from 1 J/cm2 to 10 J/cm2 on osteogenic differentiation of human gingival mesenchymal stem cells (hGMSCs), human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs), and stem cells from the apical papilla (SCAPs) and shown promising outcomes at 4 J/cm2 and then having a detrimental impact at higher energy densities. Aspiration of dental instruments is a rare event that carries potentially serious complications when it occurs, especially in older patients, where protective reflexes are diminished. Clinical management may be difficult because of the risk of granulation tissue and different retrieval strategies according to the object’s characteristics. This innovative approach provides numerous advantages, including immediate enhancements in facial aesthetics, occlusion, and phonetic function while significantly reducing overall treatment duration. SFA is especially beneficial for patients exhibiting specific characteristics, such as well-aligned teeth and minimal occlusal discrepancies. In this case study, a patient presented with persistent facial asymmetry and lip protrusion despite previous orthodontic treatment. Bimaxillary protrusion is a common facial profile among Asians, typically managed through non-surgical orthodontic approaches. However, when an unfavorable facial profile is combined with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), surgical intervention may become the primary treatment choice. This case report presents a modified maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) technique in a 31-year-old male patient who presented with lip protrusion and snoring. Polysomnography revealed severe OSA with an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) of 39.7. Objectives: This study investigated the synthesis and partial characterization of phosphorylated chitosan extracted from the cuttlebone of Sepia aculeata (Orbingy, 1848) and evaluated its antimicrobial potential against oral pathogens. Methods: The synthesis of phosphorylated chitosan from Sepia aculeata cuttlebone involved several steps: cleaning, deproteinization, demineralization to extract chitin, deacetylation to produce chitosan, and phosphorylation to introduce phosphate groups. Phosphorylation enhances the properties of chitosan, making it a promising candidate for oral health applications.
