The Wild Celery Of Christmas Lake, Hibbert Hill

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The growth and reproduction of Vallisneria as seen and photographed below water in Christmas Lake, Hennepin County, Minnesota, is described. The functions of the water surface film, of wave energy, and of the coiled stem of the pistillate flower, in fertilization is discussed. It is found that many of the plants grow in such depths that fertilization is impossible.

TRADITIONALLY, wheatbelt farmers have looked upon sheep as being subsidiary, or at best, complementary to their main activity, wheat growing.

Because there has been a mistaken belief that clover would not grow, these farmers have depended upon native grasses and crop remains (stubble) for sheep feed, a practice which has put a limit to the number of sheep a property could support.

IN four field experiments and two paddock strip trials since 1960, molybdenum applied to wheat and oats grown on scrubplain soils in the eastern wheatbelt increased yields by up to 3 i bushels of wheat and 5^ bushels of oats per acre.

A three part study was conducted on a single quaking aspen tree (Populus tremuloides): ( l) the strength and other physical properties of fiberboard made from the trunk, roots, and limbs using the cold soda pulping process, (2) the strength properties of paper made from the trunk, root, and limb sections using the Kraft pulping process, and (3) a chemical analysis of the trunk, roots, and limbs. Results of these studies indicate there are significant differences in many of the properties of the three parts of the tree, and that parts of the tree other than the trunk possess useful …

Leaves of Crassula argentea exhibit characteristics common to many succulent plants. A thick waxy cuticle, thin-walled parenchyma, thin cytoplasmic layer, and large vacuole all function in a water storage capacity. Hydathodes are demonstrated to perform guttation. The internal distortion of prepared tissues is shown to be a function of the difference in hydrogen ion concentrations between the fixatives and the C. argentea tissue.

THE original home of stinkwort is the Mediterranean region, including northern France. Apparently the first Australian record was at Onkaparinga in South Australia about 90 years ago.

Efforts were made to keep it in bounds during the years immediately following introduction, but it continued to spread and is now f i r m ly established in all agricultural districts of South Australia.

It also covers large tracts of land in New South Wales and Victoria and occurs in most districts of Western Australia.

Fairway crested wheatgrass, which is identified taxonomically as Agropyron cristatum (L.) Gaertn. (45), A. cristatiforme (38), or A. pectiniforme Roem. and Schult (22), is an economically important range grass belonging to the "crested wheatgrass complex" (24, 38). The crested wheatgrass complex includes diploid, 2n = 14, tetraploid, 2n = 28, and hexaploid, 2n = 42, forms (1, 11, 22). The variety Fairway and Fairway-like derivatives are the only known diploid members of the species complex (24, 38). Meiotic chromosome behavior of Fairway diploids appears to be typical of other diploid species; however, the number of plants examined …

COTTON is grown in the Ord Valley of north Western Australia, mainly as an annual, irrigated crop during the hot summer months of the "wet season".

It is usually planted in November-December and harvested March-May.
