Remote Detection Of Coral 'Bleaching' Using Pulsed-Laser Fluorescence Spectroscopy, J. T. Hardy, F. E. Hoge, J. K. Yungel, Richard E. Dodge

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Despite their biological and economic importance coral reefs are increasingly threatened by human activities. Recently, 'bleaching' of reefs, i.e. loss of photosynthetic pigmentation, has occurred at numerous globally-distributed sites. A number of environmental stressors, including increased water temperature, can induce bleaching. Several investigators have suggested that the widespread occurrence of coral bleaching represents an early warning signal of global greenhouse warming. Regardless of the cause, the extent of coral bleaching, both regionally and globally, needs to be documented and monitored. We conducted laboratory studies to evaluate the potential of using remotely-sensed laser-induced fluorescence to monitor coral pigmentation. Five species of …

A Multivariate Characterization Of Assemblages Of Planktonic Mysids Decapods And Sergestids In The Chesapeake Bay Mouth Area, John Charles Seibel Oct 1992

A Multivariate Characterization Of Assemblages Of Planktonic Mysids Decapods And Sergestids In The Chesapeake Bay Mouth Area, John Charles Seibel

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

This study is the first to focus on the assemblages of the planktonic mysids, decapods, and sergestids found in the lower Chesapeake Bay. The assemblages of these organisms in the lower Chesapeake Bay and nearby shelf were characterized using three different statistical approaches, and the methods used were evaluated for their effectiveness at delineating ecologically meaningful assemblages. Three stations were sampled across the Chesapeake mouth and one offshore, with oblique and neuston net tows. Twenty-seven larval stages, representing at least 23 species, were found in sufficient numbers to be analyzed statistically. The statistical approaches were each based upon a different …

Plankton Transport Patterns And Residence Times Around A Tall Seamount: Simulation Results, Dorlisa Louise Hommel Oct 1992

Plankton Transport Patterns And Residence Times Around A Tall Seamount: Simulation Results, Dorlisa Louise Hommel

OES Theses and Dissertations

A semi-spectral primitive equation circulation model was used to simulate flow over an isolated gaussian seamount. Model configuration was such that a Taylor Cap was generated in the flow over the seamount. Arrays of 100 drifters were released in the simulated flow fields at several depths (50, 100, 200, and 400 m) both upstream and over the seamount. For several experiments vertical behaviors were imposed on the drifters to simulate zooplankton migration patterns. The drifter simulations extended for three months. Drifter transport patterns were determined by the initial release position of the drifter relative to the Taylor Cap as well …

The Gulf Stream Front, Its Role In Larval Fish Survival And Recruitment In Florida: Hydrographic Station And Plankton Data, Denis William Frazel, M. Elizabeth Clarke, G. S. Kleppel, Peter B. Ortner, John M. Braker, Carol A. Burkart, Gayle Louise Stone

Technical Reports

The goal of this project was to develop a clearer understanding of the role that the Gulf Stream system plays in larval fish survival and recruitment in Florida waters. The specific objectives of this study were to:

  1. Determine whether the biomass of fish larva, other zooplankton, microzooplankton and phytoplankton is higher at the shoreward front of the Gulf Stream than on either side of it.
  2. Characterize the assemblages of fish larvae predators and prey both at the front and on either side of it.
  3. Determine if the composition, abundance and size frequency distribution of larval and juvenile fishes in the …

Marine Science Faculty Publications

delta-C-13, delta-N-15, and C/N were measured for each of 247 muscle tissue samples from 12 bird, 4 seal, and 4 fish species collected in the Weddell Sea primarily during March 1986. delta-C-13 values ranged from -31.3 to -22.0 parts per thousand and, in the case of fish and seal samples, varied inversely with C/N. This implied that lipid concentration significantly influenced these vertebrate delta-C-13 measurements. No such relationship was found between C/N and delta-N-15, where the latter values ranged from +4.4 to +11.2 parts per thousand. with considerable overlap among many of the taxonomic groups measured. Notable exceptions to this …

The Effects Of Temperature On The Physiology Of Phataria Unifascialis : And Its Implications For The Species' Distribution In The Gulf Of California, Michael Boyce Morgan Jun 1992

The Effects Of Temperature On The Physiology Of Phataria Unifascialis : And Its Implications For The Species' Distribution In The Gulf Of California, Michael Boyce Morgan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Populations of the asteroid Phataria unifascialis were sampled subtidally in the Gulf of California at Loreto, well within the species' distribution, and at Bahia de los Angeles (the Bay of LA), at the northern end of its distribution on several occasions between 1989 and 1991 to determine the influence of water temperature on species' physiology at each location. The starfish was much more abundant at Loreto, and though both locations had similar indices of pyloric caeca and gonad development, the population at Loreto was distinctly separated by depth into a shallow reproducing population and a deeper feeding population. No such …

Nutrient Provinces In The Sea: Concentration Ratios, Reaction Rate Ratios, And Ideal Covariation, Kent A. Fanning Apr 1992

Nutrient Provinces In The Sea: Concentration Ratios, Reaction Rate Ratios, And Ideal Covariation, Kent A. Fanning

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Global distributions of the ratios of the concentrations of nitrate + nitrite (= [N]) and phosphate (= [P]) are evaluated from Geochemical Ocean Sections Study (GEOSECS) and Transient Tracers in the Ocean (TTO) data sets. If large oceanic regions (or provinces) can be identified on the basis of constant [N]:[P] ratios, then the distribution equation for a reactive variable shows that the ratio of the net reaction rates involving N and P in each one is equal to its concentration ratio. Organisms within the interiors of the provinces would then be in balance with the ratios in which the nutrients …

Simulation Of The 1979 Spring Bloom In The Mid-Atlantic Bight: A Coupled Physical/Biological/Optical Model, Watson W. Gregg, John J. Walsh Apr 1992

Simulation Of The 1979 Spring Bloom In The Mid-Atlantic Bight: A Coupled Physical/Biological/Optical Model, Watson W. Gregg, John J. Walsh

Marine Science Faculty Publications

A coupled physical/biological/optical model was developed to investigate the causes of phytoplankton variability in the spring 1979 Mid-Atlantic Bight (MAB) as observed in Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) imagery, and to estimate the magnitude and variability of primary production. The model incorporated advection, mixing, sinking, growth as a function of light, temperature, and nutrient availability, and death as a function of ingestion. These variables were assumed to determine the large-scale, low-frequency variability of phytoplankton distributions the model also contained two phytoplankton groups, netplankton and nanoplankton, which differed in maximum growth rate, sinking rate, and specific light absorption. The model produced …

The Growth And Bioenergetics Of Callinectes Sapidus Larvae And The Effects Of Diet Quality On Larval Physiology, James J. Pletl Apr 1992

The Growth And Bioenergetics Of Callinectes Sapidus Larvae And The Effects Of Diet Quality On Larval Physiology, James J. Pletl

OES Theses and Dissertations

Food quality, especially ω3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), can affect the physiology and metabolic efficiency of larvae of the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus. These affects may correlate with success in development and juvenile recruitment.

Larvae were exposed to two diets differing quantitatively in ω3 PUFA and respiration, excretion, growth, and feeding rates were measured for each larval stage and the megalopal stage. The energy partitioned to molts and specific dynamic action was also measured. T

he ω3 PUFA enriched diet resulted in a lower respiration rate when compared to the unsupplemented diet, but there was little differences in excretion …

Sea Turtle Conservation Program, Broward County, Fl 1992 Report, Curtis M. Burney, Catherine A. Mattison

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports

Since 1978, the Broward County Environmental Protection Department (BCEPD) has provided for the conservation of endangered and threatened sea turtle species within its area of responsibility. Broward County is within the normal nesting areas of three species of sea turtles: the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). The loggerhead is listed as a threatened species, while the green and leatherback are listed as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, 1973, and Chapter 370, F.S.

Since these statutes strictly forbid any disturbance …
