Comparison Of Predicted And Observed Dioxin Levels In Fish: Implications For Risk Assessment, Judy S. Lakind, Daniel Q. Naiman
Comparison Of Predicted And Observed Dioxin Levels In Fish: Implications For Risk Assessment, Judy S. Lakind, Daniel Q. Naiman
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
After comparing sampled and modelled dioxin levels in the tissue of fish near pulp and paper mill discharges, the authors argue that, until an improved bioaccumulation model is incorporated into EPA's Risk assessment process, determination of human health Risks associated with consuming dioxin-contaminated fish should be based on sampling.

Modeling Nutrient And Plankton Processes In The California Coastal Transition Zone, John Roland Moisan
Modeling Nutrient And Plankton Processes In The California Coastal Transition Zone, John Roland Moisan
OES Theses and Dissertations
Two time- and space-dependent, physical-bio-optical models have been developed for the California Coastal Transition Zone (CTZ) region with the overall objective of understanding and quantifying the processes th at contribute to the spatial and temporal development of nutrient and plankton distributions in the CTZ. The first of these models considers only time- and vertical processes at specific locations in the CTZ. The model food web components include: silicate, nitrate, ammonium, two phytoplankton size fractions, copepods, doliolids, euphausiids and a detritus pool. The wavelength dependent attenuation of the subsurface irradiance field, due to sea water, phytoplankton pigment concentrations and dissolved organic …
Evaluation Of Long Term Changes In The Macrobenthic Community Of The Southern Branch Of The Elizabeth River, Virginia, William S. Hunley
Evaluation Of Long Term Changes In The Macrobenthic Community Of The Southern Branch Of The Elizabeth River, Virginia, William S. Hunley
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Long-term changes in the macrobenthos of the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River, Virginia were investigated by comparing the present study of community structure with that described ten years earlier by Hawthorne (1980). The results indicated that dominant organisms remained relatively constant in composition but exhibited considerable fluctuation in density. Differences in diversity and spatial distribution of fauna were also observed relative to the previous decade.
Multivariate statistical analyses indicated the macrobenthos exhibited significant spatial and seasonal patterns. Sediments characterized as silts and clays predominated down river while sandier sediment types were most common farther upriver. The spatial distributions of …

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports
This report documents the August 1992 monitoring of benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages in the Pon Everglades Southpon turning basin vicinity and adjacent areas of John U. Lloyd State Recreation Area. This is the third monitoring effort of the series carried out by Nova University Oceanographic Center. Sampling was carried out chiefly during the first two weeks of August 1992. Hurricane Andrew and its aftermath resulted in delays in sampling at several sites and in analyzing data. A two-week postponement in submission deadline was requested and granted. An additional postponement, to 31 January 1992, was requested due to a move at the …

Skeletal Structural Basis Of Density Banding In The Reef Coral Montastrea Annularis, Richard E. Dodge, Alina Szmant-Froelich, R. Garcia, Peter K. Swart, A. Forester, J. J. Leder
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures
Density banding in coral skeletons can provide for reconstruction of the coral's growth en- vironment over long periods. The physical differ- ences between low and high density portions of a skeletal band are not well understood. The skeletal architecture of M. annularis from Southeast Flor- ida, the Florida Keys, St. Croix, the Bahamas, and Mexico was compared in X-ray revealed high den- sity (HD), low density (LD), and stress HD bands. Density changes arose from differences in the size, but not spacing, of exothecal structural elements (horizontal dissepiments and vertical costae). En- dothecal architecture size (e.g., columella, dissepi- ments, septa) …

Microzooplankton Distributions In The Irish Sea, Carol A. Burkart
Microzooplankton Distributions In The Irish Sea, Carol A. Burkart
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the distributions and abundances of microzooplankton across a front in the Irish Sea, and to test the hypothesis that the structure which develops within the microzooplankton community is the result of the interactions within the communities.
Eight sites were sampled on May 1-2, 1989 along a transect from Liverpool Bay, England to Dundalk Bay, Ireland. The transect crossed both the Liverpool Bay and western Irish Sea fronts; sites were positioned with respect to water type (e.g., coastal, thermally mixed, thermally stratified) . Five sites were sampled by double Longhurst-Hardy Plankton Recorder (LHPR) …

A Survey Of The Stony Coral Community Composition Of Pompano Ledge, Broward County, Florida, With A Preliminary Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Mooring Buoys In Reducing Coral Damage, John D. Hocevar
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Stony corals of Pompano Ledge, First Reef, Broward County, Florida were sampled in situ using a new reef assessment method. The circular-radial method was used to assess the effectiveness of mooring buoys in reducing damage to reefs. Data will be part of a long-term monitoring study of·buoy impacts. The parameter of recent injury was used to provide preliminary information on buoy effectiveness.
Results were as follows: approximately 6% of the study area was covered by stony corals, with an average of 3 colonies per square meter. Diversity based on abundance (H'n) was 1 .7, and diversity based on relative coverage …

Environmental Effects On The Growth And Development Of Eastern Oyster, Crassostrea Virginica (Gmelin, 1791), Larvae: A Modeling Study, Margaret M. Dekshenieks, Eileen E. Hofmann, Eric N. Powell
CCPO Publications
The effects of temperature, food concentration, salinity and turbidity on the growth and development of Crassostrea virginica larvae were investigated with a time-dependent mathematical model. Formulations used in the model for larval growth are based upon laboratory data. Simulations were done using temperature conditions characteristic of Laguna Madre, Galveston Bay, Apalachicola Bay, North Inlet and Chesapeake Bay. These simulations show that the duration of the planktonic larval phase, which is determined by larval growth rate, decreases at lower latitudes in response to warmer water temperatures. Also, oysters in the more southern locations have a longer spawning season during which the …

The pearl oyster fishery of Kuwait was monitored daily from January 1989 to May 1990. Landings of pearl oysters in 1989 totaled 287 tons with a market value of U.S. $1.0 million. Commercial pearls (>3 mm) were estimated to be present in one of every 4200 oysters. Most of the pearl oysters landed were new recruits with hinge lengths between 40-56 mm. There was a curvilinear relationship between total weight and size of oysters (length) and the sex ratio approached 1:1. Spawning occurs throughout the year, with a spat settlement peak in early fall. Over the size range examined …

Dormancy is an important life-history strategy which allows copepods to increase their fitness by delaying growth and reproduction until harsh environmental conditions have ameliorated. For marine species, the primary strategies identified to date include the production of dormant eggs by shallow-water species, and copepodite overwintering in deep-water species. Herein, we describe a third strategy in which fertilized adult females enter a “reproductive-resting” stage during the late fall that allows them to overwinter and provide a first source of spring naupliar recruitment. This strategy has been observed in the estuarine copepod Coullana canadensis, but may also occur in other species. …

The land-fast sea-ice brine contains a diverse phagotrophic protist assemblage consisting of < 5 mum heterotrophic flagellates, Cryothecomonas spp., heterotrophic dinoflagellates, and heterotrophic and mixotrophic ciliates. Fine-scale horizontal spatial variability is a feature of this assemblage; samples taken within 1 m of each other can be dominated by different heterotrophic protists. Many of the larger heterotrophic protists found in the brine are also found in the water column. The photosynthetic ciliate Mesodinium rubrum is also common. In mid to late austral spring, the heterotrophic assemblage accounts for ca 10% of the total protist biomass in the brine and is dominated by Cryothecomonas spp. This flagellate …
