Homing And Ecology In The Southern Flying Squirrel, Glaucomys Volans In Southeastern Virginia, Sherrie Lynn Sawyer

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine whether homing occurred in the southern flying squirrel, Glauaomys volans, and if so, the greatest homing distance. Information on the squirrel's ecology, reproductive biology and use of artificial nest boxes was also obtained. The study was conducted from November 1978 through March 1981, using nest boxes placed in a deciduous forest in southeastern Virginia.

For the homing experiments, twenty squirrels were released a total of 29 times along three lines at distances of 250 m to 1.6 km from the homesites. Squirrels were found to home successfully up to 1,000 m.

A Quantitative Study Of The Aquatic Macroinvertebrates In An Irregularly Flooded Salt Marsh, Smith Island, Virginia, Leon L. Robert Jr.

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Little is known about the aquatic macroinvertebrate community structure in coastal salt marshes. This study investigated the aquatic macroinvertebrate community structure in a coastal Virginia salt marsh. Sixteen samples were taken weekly from two different sites on Smith Island, Virginia, from April to mid-October 1982. Bimonthly samples were taken during the months March and November due to low density of organisms and reduced growth rates at these times.

A total of 46 taxa were collected with 17 occurring regularly, indicating a relatively diverse fauna. Wide fluctuations in the physical parameters were observed; however, temporal changes in the macroinvertebrate community cannot …

Water Quality Trends In The Las Vegas Wash Wetlands, F. A. Morris, L. J. Paulson Jan 1983

Water Quality Trends In The Las Vegas Wash Wetlands, F. A. Morris, L. J. Paulson

Publications (WR)

The Las Vegas Wash is a wetlands ecosystem that acts to buffer the effects of wastewater discharges on the receiving waters of Lake Mead. The wash is the terminus for the 4,144 km2 Las Vegas Valley drainage basin, emptying into Las Vegas Bay of Lake Mead (Colorado River). It is in the northern Mojave desert, which receives an average of only 10 cm of rainfall annually. The Las Vegas Wash is technically an artificial wetland supported almost entirely by the perennial flows from sewage treatment plants. These flows contribute an average of 3-7 t of nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) and …

Monitoring Defecation Activity Of Infaunal Deposit Feeders, Fred C. Dobbs Jan 1983

Monitoring Defecation Activity Of Infaunal Deposit Feeders, Fred C. Dobbs

OES Faculty Publications

An inexpensive, reliable thermistor device capable of monitoring infaunal foraging activity was built and used in the laboratory to examine effects of temperature on sediment reworking by the maldanld polychaete Clymenella torquata. The worm defecated at least once per hour 55.0 % (12.0 "C) to 88.2 % (5.5 "C) of the time. Defecation rate was linearly and positively related to temperature. Estimated volume of sediment ejected per defecation (0.015 ml) did not change with temperature. Results are compared with previous reworking studies of C. torquata.

Factors Influencing Reforestation Of Surface Mined Lands In Southern Illinois, Jill R. Medland Jan 1983

Factors Influencing Reforestation Of Surface Mined Lands In Southern Illinois, Jill R. Medland

Masters Theses

Studies of surface coal mined lands have focused primarily on older lands mined prior to the enactment of reclamation legislation. Current laws will require extensive grading, soil replacement and revegetation. In order to more effectively reforest these lands, I have evaluated sites planted to woody species during the past decade.

The vegetational characteristics, as well as both avaian and small mammal populations of several reclaimed surface mined areas, differing in age and reclamation procedures, were compared. Success of planted trees ranged from 50 to 91% and survival varied with the species planted. There was no relationship between tree survival and …

Phytoplankton Community Structure In Dardanelle Reservoir, Arkansas, 1975-1982, John D. Rickett, Robert L. Watson Jan 1983

Phytoplankton Community Structure In Dardanelle Reservoir, Arkansas, 1975-1982, John D. Rickett, Robert L. Watson

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Phytoplankton data were collected with standard equipment and procedures over an eight-year period (1975-1982) in Dardanelle Reservoir, Arkansas. Community abundance and diversity at the genus level are described. Sixty-five genera representing 35 families and five divisions were identified. Total phytoplankton abundance and diversity were quite uniform among the stations but fluctuated considerably with time. These fluctuations did not correspond clearly with season. Dominant taxa were seasonal, though, with diatoms being usually dominant in January, April and October, and blue-greens dominant in July. The phytoplankton community structure has not been significantly altered by the operation of ANO Unit I.

Zooplankton Community Structure In Dardanelle Reservoir, Arkansas, 1975-1982, John D. Rickett, Robert L. Watson

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Zooplankton was collected at 10 stations in Dardanelle Reservoir from 1975 to 1982. Current data were compared to a five-year preoperational study phase. Rotifer taxa strongly dominated the community. Overall abundance was higher, variety about the same and diversity lower than those of comparable studies. Thermal discharges caused a dominance shift between two rotifer taxa, slightly depressed abundance and variety, did not noticeably affect diversity and elevated the phytoplankton/zooplankton ratio. Heated effluent also stimulated stronger fluctuations in abundance and variety. Other studies indicate that in upper sections of the Arkansas River drainage, microcrustaceans dominate lake habitats whereas rotifers dominate river …

Effects Of Sewage Pollution In The White River, Arkansas, Arthur V. Brown, Lawrence D. Willis, Peter P. Brussock Jan 1983

Effects Of Sewage Pollution In The White River, Arkansas, Arthur V. Brown, Lawrence D. Willis, Peter P. Brussock

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Recently there has been much emphasis placed on the importance of leaf detritus processing to the energetics of stream invertebrates. This study was designed primarily to assess the effects of municipal effluent on the ability of a stream community to utilize leaf detritus, and secondarily to evaluate the extent of the pollution of the White River by the Fayetteville, Arkansas, effluent discharge. Physical and chemical water quality and benthos were sampled periodically at one station upstream and two stations downstream from the discharge, and in the Richland Creek tributary. Processing of leaf detritus was also studied at each site using …

Comparison Of Two Year Classes Of Hybrid Grass Carp And Grass Carp For Aquatic Plant Control, Mike Freeze, Scott Henderson Jan 1983

Comparison Of Two Year Classes Of Hybrid Grass Carp And Grass Carp For Aquatic Plant Control, Mike Freeze, Scott Henderson

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Two year classes of grass carp and F, hybrids resulting from bighead carp male x grass carp female were compared at various stocking densities for aquatic plant control. One and two year old grass carp exhibited higher survival rates and better growth rates than the same age hybrid grass carp. The presence of grass carp or hybrid grass carp decreased both Secchi disc transparencies and dissolved oxygen values. Grass carp had a greater negative effect upon these measurements because they removed the vegetation quicker than the hybrid grass carp. These apparent detrimental effects on water quality are necessary trade-offs for …

Short Creek Oolite (Lower Mississippian) Deposition, War Eagle Quarry, Madison County, Arkansas, Barbara A. Lisle Jan 1983

Short Creek Oolite (Lower Mississippian) Deposition, War Eagle Quarry, Madison County, Arkansas, Barbara A. Lisle

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The Short Creek Oolite is the only formally designated member of the Lower Mississippian Boone Formation. Although oolite deposits are often considered to be formed in shoal areas, detailed study of the War Eagle Short Creek disclosed characteristics incompatible with deposition as an oolite shoal. At the War Eagle Quarry, the Short Creek Oolite occurs between deep water strata and there is a conspicuous absence of cross-stratification and other shallow water bedding features. Modal analysis revealed a lower oolith content than found in Recent oolite shoals or in the Short Creek Oolite of Missouri, which has been interpreted as a …

Abundance And Seasonal Occurrence Of Psorophora Columbiae In A Northeast Arkansas Ricefield Community, Larry A. Olson, Julia A. Huggins Jan 1983

Abundance And Seasonal Occurrence Of Psorophora Columbiae In A Northeast Arkansas Ricefield Community, Larry A. Olson, Julia A. Huggins

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Increased population levels of the dark ricefield mosquito, Psorophora columbiae (Dyar and Knab), have been shown to be associated with rice cultivation in Arkansas and several other states. Four standard New Jersey light traps were operated daily between May 30 and October 2 of 1981 and 1982 to determine the relative abundance and seasonal occurrence of this species in NE Arkansas. The effect of trap distance from nearby rice on the number of adult P. columbiae collected was assessed by comparing weekly totals from 2 traps located within 0.9 km of rice fields with totals from 2 traps situated beyond …

Host-records, prevalence, and biological characteristics of some of the helminths are …

Use Of Hydroelectric Dams To Control Evaporation And Salinity In The Colorado River System, Larry J. Paulson Jan 1983

Use Of Hydroelectric Dams To Control Evaporation And Salinity In The Colorado River System, Larry J. Paulson

Publications (WR)

The main stem reservoirs on the Colorado River comprise one of the largest and most heavily used freshwater bodies in the nation. These reservoirs (Lake Powell, Lake Mead, Lake Mohave and Lake Havasu) can store up to 53,590,400 acre-feet of water at their maximum capacities. Nonetheless, local water shortages still exist in some areas of the Colorado River Basin. There is also concern that salt concentrations are approaching levels that could severely affect municipal and agricultural uses. Water shortages will become even more acute as demands for water increase with continued urban and agricultural development in the basin. Water conservation …

The Influence Of Lake Powell On The Suspended Sediment-Phosphorus Dynamics Of The Colorado River Inflow To Lake Mead, T. D. Evans, Larry J. Paulson

Publications (WR)

The Colorado River has been successively modified by the construction of several reservoirs, beginning in 1935 with the formation of Lake Mead by Hoover Dam. These reservoirs are located in a chain, and each one has an influence on the nutrient dynamics and productivity of the river and downstream reservoir. Lake Mead derives 98% of its annual inflow from the Colorado River. Historically, the Colorado River inflow was unregulated into Lake Mead. Regulation occurred in 1963, when Lake Powell was impounded by the construction of Glen Canyon Dam, approximately 450 km upstream. The formation of Lake Powell drastically altered the …
