Monocyte-Platelet Interaction In Immune And Nonimmune Thrombocytopenia, Mansoor Saleh, D L. Moore, J Y. Lee, A F. Lobuglio
Monocyte-Platelet Interaction In Immune And Nonimmune Thrombocytopenia, Mansoor Saleh, D L. Moore, J Y. Lee, A F. Lobuglio
Haematology and Oncology, East Africa
Platelets from 24 patients with immune thrombocytopenia resistant to standard therapy (refractory ITP), 35 patients with nonimmune thrombocytopenia (non-ITP), and 32 normal donors were studied in regard to platelet surface-bound IgG (PBIgG) and the ability of these platelets to be bound by human monocytes in vitro (monocyte-platelet rosette assay). Fourteen (58%) of the platelet samples from refractory ITP patients but none (0%) from the non-ITP or control donors had PBIgG greater than 800 molecules IgG/platelet. Seventeen of 24 (71%) of the ITP patients had platelets which demonstrated increased monocyte- platelet rosette formation [rosette index (RI) greater than 2], whereas only …
Effect Of Intravenous Gammaglobulin On Circulating And Platelet-Bound Antibody In Immune Thrombocytopenia, G Garbano, Mansoor Saleh, P G. Mori, A F. Lobuglio, D Shaw
Effect Of Intravenous Gammaglobulin On Circulating And Platelet-Bound Antibody In Immune Thrombocytopenia, G Garbano, Mansoor Saleh, P G. Mori, A F. Lobuglio, D Shaw
Haematology and Oncology, East Africa
Ten patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) were studied before and following a rise in circulating platelets subsequent to infusions of intravenous gammaglobulin (400 mg/kg/day x 5 days). We quantitated the amount of circulating IgG capable of binding to normal donor platelets in vitro using an 125I-monoclonal anti-human IgG assay, as well as the amount of IgG associated with the patients' platelets before and following therapy. We found no evidence for a decrease in platelet-specific IgG antibodies in these patients undergoing an acute response to therapy. These data suggest that the short-term efficacy of intravenous gammaglobulin is due to effects …
Monoclonal Antibodies To Novel Myeloid Antigens Reveal Human Neutrophil Heterogeneity., Edward D. Ball, Robert F. Graziano, Li Shen, Michael W. Fanger
Monoclonal Antibodies To Novel Myeloid Antigens Reveal Human Neutrophil Heterogeneity., Edward D. Ball, Robert F. Graziano, Li Shen, Michael W. Fanger
Dartmouth Scholarship
Three cytotoxic murine monoclonal antibodies that recognize myeloid-specific antigens have been produced by immunization with normal human neutrophils or myeloblasts from a patient with acute myelomonocytic leukemia. Two of these, PMN 6 and PMN 29, are specific for neutrophils; the third monoclonal antibody, AML-2-23, is reactive with the majority of normal monocytes as well as a subpopulation of mature neutrophils. Although neutrophils from all individuals tested expressed these antigens, cytofluorographic analysis revealed that the percentage of cells bearing the PMN 6 and AML-2-23 antigens varied among individuals. Significant additional heterogeneity in the density of each antigen among antigen-bearing cells was …
Histology Of Dichromatic And Seasonal Color Change Of The Cranial Region Of Callagur Borneoensis, Kevin William Matson
Histology Of Dichromatic And Seasonal Color Change Of The Cranial Region Of Callagur Borneoensis, Kevin William Matson
Masters Theses
Male Callagur borneoensis exihibit sexual dichromatism and seasonal coloration which is rare among turtles. In the breeding season male's heads are colored white with a scarlet stripe from the occiput to the tip of the snout. After the breeding season they change to drab charcoal-gray to black with a dull orange-yellow stripe. Females and juveniles are a drab brown throughout the year.
This study was performed to determine the mechanisms of this color change at the histological level. Histological preparation of the head revealed a significant increase in vascular tissue just below the epidermis of the stripe area with increased …
A Comparative Consideration Of Lipoprotein Distribution And Stress Response In The Mallard Duck And Man, Janice Mackay
A Comparative Consideration Of Lipoprotein Distribution And Stress Response In The Mallard Duck And Man, Janice Mackay
Honors Theses
Lipid is associated with all of the major serum protein fractions of both the mallard duck and man. however, whereas the ρ lipoproteins predominate in man with little lipo-albumin evident, according to available literature, in ducks the lipo-albumin constitutes more than half of the serum lipoproteins, and a substantial lipo-prealbumin fraction is evident. Most studies of lipo-proteins are carried out on human serum primarily for the purpose of diagnosis of abnormalities. The stress response in many animals includes a rise in serum α-globulin levels, but its physiological basis is still speculative. While a consideration of the changes in lipoprotein distribution …
A Study Of Regeneration Of Peripheral Nerve In The Rat, James C. Jay
A Study Of Regeneration Of Peripheral Nerve In The Rat, James C. Jay
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Due to improvements in fixation and embedding techniques a restudy of regenerating peripheral nerve was thought advisable in order to better understand and describe the processes which take place.
Femoral nerves of white Wistar rats were used. The lesions were made by either crushing or severing the nerve. After a period of regeneration, varying from 12 hours to six days, the wound was reopened and the injured portion fixed in situ with 1% osmium tetroxide. The tissues were then removed, dehydrated, embedded and sectioned. The sections were stained and studied with a modified RCA EMU2A electron microscope.
Observations revealed that …
The Comparative Ultrastructure Of The Choroid Plexus In Certain Animal Species, Norman M. Case
The Comparative Ultrastructure Of The Choroid Plexus In Certain Animal Species, Norman M. Case
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Employing the electron microscope, the writer studied the ultra-structure of the choroid plexus of the lateral and the 4th ventricles of the brain in seven species of animals comparatively. No such extensive comparative investigation has been made before with this instrument. The animals represent, in the main, species which have served previously, both in physiological and light microscopical studies on this organ, and consist of several specimens each of the frog, the opossum, the hamster, the guinea pig, the rat, the rabbit and the dog.
Materials and methods. A technique of sacrificing the animal under deep anesthesia by decapitation …
The Chromosomes Of The Yeast Cell, Donald William Penn
The Chromosomes Of The Yeast Cell, Donald William Penn
Bachelors’ Theses
Saccharomyces cerevisiae has long been a fungus of economic importance in the baking and beverage fields. A large amount of research has been done on this yeast cytologically and biochemically. However, due to its small size and difficulty in staining, the cytology of the yeast cell remains somewhat in question. Chromosomes and division figures have been demonstrated by several workers, but there still remain sharp differences of opinion as to the nature of the nucleus. Recent work on the genetics of yeast has shown evidence of chromosome division similar to that occurring in higher plants and studies of linkage have …

The Mammalian Erythrocyte, H.J. Werner
Bachelors’ Theses
An investigation of bibliographies shows that the red corpuscles of the blood have been studied very extensively, in fact, wore so than any cell in the mammalian body. The study has progressed vigorously and from varied points of view.
A Comparative Study Of The Structure And Origin Of The Yolk Nucleus, John P. Munson
A Comparative Study Of The Structure And Origin Of The Yolk Nucleus, John P. Munson
Biology Faculty Scholarship
The question as to the comparative structure and origin of the yolk nucleus involves several other problems:
1. Is the yolk nucleus a normal element of the egg cytoplasm, or is it associated with pathological states of the egg, or is it an artefact due to reagents?
2. Is there a necessary connection between one form and another such that one can be derived from the other?
3. Is it an amorphous chemical substance or does it possess anything suggesting permanence of structure?
4. Does it arise de novo or is it a modification of something similar existing in the …
Organization And Polarity Of Protoplasm, John P. Munson
Organization And Polarity Of Protoplasm, John P. Munson
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
In higher forms of life, we usually concede the presence of an organ specialized for the performance of a function. In these higher forms coordination of organs, which entails a regular sequence in their functions, is readily made out; and it seems a mere platitude to say, of these, that organization determines the functions of the organism. To what extent can functions exist in the absence of organization; does the one precede the other; or have function and organization developed simultaneously, out of matter devoid of both structure and function? In my studies on the cell, I have kept these …
