Resource management technical reports

A detailed soil survey and horticultural capability assessment was undertaken over 1,804 ha of land adjacent to existing plantations on levees of the Gascoyne River near Carnarvon. The study provides mapped land resource data and advice in relation to land management and the possibility of further land release for horticulture. In the assessment of horticultural capability primary consideration has been given to the risk of erosion during flood events, to salinity, and to soil drainage conditions.

Distribution Of The Fishes Of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Damien J. Simbeck Dec 1990

Distribution Of The Fishes Of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Damien J. Simbeck

Masters Theses

Over 200 collections of fishes have been made within the boundaries of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, revealing a Park ichthyofauna of 74 native and 5 introduced fish species. Abrams Creek, containing the most diverse ichthyofauna in the park, currently contains only 35 of its historical 67 fish species. This loss of species resulted from intentional poisoning of eh creek to improve habitat for rainbow trout and impoundment of the lowest 2.6 miles by Chilhowee Reservoir.

Abrams Creek also contains a very unusual ichthyofauna in its upper portion. Several species found above its 25-foot waterfall have not been found …

Psychometric Profiles Of Patient Populations With Excessive Daytime Sleepiness, Edward J. Stepanski, Jon J. Markey, Frank J. Zorick, Thomas Roth

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Patients with narcolepsy have more psychiatric symptoms than normal controls as measured by psychometric tests. However, it is unclear whether these findings are specific to narcolepsy, as some studies have suggested, or related to excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) or to chronic illness. We compared a group of 56 narcoleptics to age- and sex-matched controls with EDS. A group of 48 individuals with normal sleep architecture was also used as an additional control group. Both the narcoleptic group and the EDS-control group had significantly greater scores on Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory scales hut were not different from each other. Our data …

The Physiologic Basis For Nutritional Support In Hepatic Failure, John J. Fath Dec 1990

The Physiologic Basis For Nutritional Support In Hepatic Failure, John J. Fath

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Hepatic failure is often perceived as a unidimensional progression from near normal clinical function (Child's class A) to overt clinical failure (Child's class C). As this view fails to distinguish between patients who are capable of using exogenous protein and those who cannot, it hinders the nutritional support team in determining protein supplementation. This report addresses the physiologic basis for variable findings in hepatic failure and proposes a simple definition of hepatic faliure based upon ability to utilize amino acids.

Passive Inhalation Of Cocaine By Infants, Sabrina M. Heidemann, Mark G. Goetting Dec 1990

Passive Inhalation Of Cocaine By Infants, Sabrina M. Heidemann, Mark G. Goetting

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Cocaine abuse has increased greatly in recent years, creating important medical, legal, and social problems. Urine drug testing is used to diagnose cocaine ingestion. The presence of the cocaine metabolite benzoylecgonine (BZ) is commonly believed to be proof of recent cocaine intoxication. However, oral ingestion of even a minute quantity of cocaine can result in a positive test result. BZ was detected in the urine of four nonbreast-fed infants aged 6 weeks to 14 months who were admitted with diagnoses unrelated to cocaine poisoning. These infants were exposed to cocaine by passive inhalation of vapors generated by adult caretakers smoking …

A Linear Analysis Of Equatorial Atlantic Ocean Thermocline Variability, Robert H. Weisberg, T. Y. Tang Dec 1990

A Linear Analysis Of Equatorial Atlantic Ocean Thermocline Variability, Robert H. Weisberg, T. Y. Tang

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Observed variations in the Atlantic Ocean's equatorial thermocline are compared at four locations with simultations using an analytical reduced-gravity model. The comparison shows the essential features of the seasonal wind-forced thermocline response to be accounted for by a linear superposition of equatorial long waves, evolving basinwide, tending to bring the zonal pressure gradient into balance with the wind stress. A frequency response function is derived whose properties provide a basis for discussing the large scale features of the equatorial Atlantic Ocean's seasonal cycle-for example, its evolution along the equator, the maximum upwelling region observed in the Gulf of Guinea and …

Doctoral Dissertations

Mature ewes were equipped with catheters in the portal, hepatic, mesenteric and femoral veins and femoral artery. Blood flows were measured by infusing a 1.5% solution of para-aminohippurate into the mesenteric vein at .764 ml/min. Net fluxes of metabolites were calculated by multiplying veno-arterial differences by tissue blood flows.

Study 1. Twenty experiments were conducted on five ewes to determine the effects of fungus-infested fescue hay on energy nutrients and regulatory hormone net fluxes. Ten experiments were conducted for each a fungus-free and fungus-infested fescue hay diet. Fungus-infested hay decreased arterial concentrations of acetoacetate and B hydroxybutyrate by 15 and …

A Temperature-Sensitive Mutant Of Escherichia Coli Affected In The Alpha Subunit Of Rna Polymerase, Majid Mehrpouyan Dec 1990

A Temperature-Sensitive Mutant Of Escherichia Coli Affected In The Alpha Subunit Of Rna Polymerase, Majid Mehrpouyan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A temperature-sensitive mutant of Escherichia coli affected in the alpha subunit of RNA polymerase has been investigated. Gene mapping and complementation experiments placed the mutation to temperature-sensitivity within the alpha operon at 72 min on the bacterial chromosome. The rate of RNA synthesis in vivo and the accumulation of ribosomal RNA were significantly reduced in the mutant at 44$\sp\circ$C. The thermostability at 44$\sp\circ$C of the purified holoenzyme from mutant cells was about 20% of that of the normal enzyme. Assays with T7 DNA as a template showed that the fraction of active enzyme competent for transcription was reduced as a …

Scanning Microscopy

Pseudomonas aeruginosa adheres to respiratory epithelial cells in a highly specific fashion. In order to study the role of P. aeruginosa polar pili in the adherence process we conducted a quantitative morphological electron microscopic examination of P. aeruginosa adherence to SO2 injured canine tracheal cells in vitro. A pilin lacking background strain of P. aeruginosa PAK (BLP2) was constructed using a gene replacement and it in turn was engineered to express either the pilin gene of P. aeruginosa PAO, PAK , or no pilin gene . After 30 minutes incubation of these bacterial strains with injured canine tracheal …

Diapause In The Earthworm, Aporrectodea Longa: Morphological And Quantitative X-Ray Microanalysis Of Cryosectioned Chloragogenous Tissue, A. J. Morgan, C. Winters Nov 1990

Diapause In The Earthworm, Aporrectodea Longa: Morphological And Quantitative X-Ray Microanalysis Of Cryosectioned Chloragogenous Tissue, A. J. Morgan, C. Winters

Scanning Microscopy

The earthworm, Aporrectodea longa, which experiences an apparent obligatory physiological resting state (“diapause”) in the temperate Summer, was collected monthly from February through to October. Morphological examination of the chloragocytes, and quantitative electron probe X-ray microanalysis of their constituent chloragosome granules prepared by cryoultramicrotomy and air-dried/smearing, were undertaken over this period. Worms entered diapause in May, and emerged from it between August and September. The long-term energy stores in the form of lipid, in addition to the more usual polysaccharide (glycogen) reserves, were accumulated by early diapause; the lipid was gradually consumed during diapause. In addition, the structure and composition …

Nucleotide Sequence Of The Epsilon-Subunit Of The Mouse Muscle Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor, P D. Gardner Nov 1990

Nucleotide Sequence Of The Epsilon-Subunit Of The Mouse Muscle Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor, P D. Gardner

Dartmouth Scholarship

The two predominant types of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors expressed in mammalian muscle differ with respect to a variety of electrophysiological and biochemical properties. A developmental, innervation-dependent switch in the subunit structure of the receptor, in which a y subunit is replaced by an E subunit, is thought to account, in large part, for these differences(1). Because of the interest in the regulatory mechanisms underlying this switch, much attention has focused on these two subunits. Here I report the nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences of a clone coding for the mouse muscle E subunit isolated from a cDNA library constructed …

Scanning Electron Microscopic Study Of Pulp Stones In Human Permanent Teeth, O. Le May, J. C. Kaqueler

Scanning Microscopy

Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine pulp stones which are small calcified formations found in the coronal and/or radicular part of the dental pulp. Pulp stones range considerably in size and shape. Most are round or oval but others can be irregular and may correspond to a reduced duplicate of the pulp chamber anatany. Both free and attached pulp stones were observed. The surface aspect was variable and frequently exhibited large resorption zones. Three characteristic features were observed on fractures a) no characteristic organization where the mineralized mass is compact and hanogeneous, b) a concentric architecture around an initiating …

Sand Bluestem And Prairie Sandreed Establishment, Robert A. Masters, Kenneth P. Vogel, Patrick E. Reece, Dennis Bauer

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Sand bluestem [Andropogon gerardii var. paucipilus (Nash) Fern,] and prairie sandreed (Calamovitfa longifolia Hook.) are native warm-season grasses used to revegetate cropland and degraded rangeland on highly erodible sandy soils in the central Great Plains. The objectives of this study were to compare establishment success of the 2 grasses and to determine if application of atrazine at time of planting enhanced grass establishment. Eight plantings, including 'Goldstrike' and 'Garden' sand bluestem and 'Goshen' and 'Pronghorn' prairie sandreed, were made from 1985 to 1987 at locations in eastern, north central, and western Nebraska. Three plantings were established under irrigation …
