Corrosion-induced bond strength reduction is a critical problem in infrastructure maintenance and repair. This study investigates several machine learning techniques, i.e., SVR, XG Boost, and random forest, for predicting the ultimate bond behavior between corroded reinforcement and concrete. In this study author employed 218 datasets of corroded samples collected from past studies containing input and output parameters used for predicting the models. The model's performance was evaluated and compared using various performance metrics, i.e., MAE, RMSE, MAPE, and MASE. The results show that random forest algorithms can reliably estimate ultimate bond strength with an RMSE value of 1.26 over SVR …

Corrosion Related To The Nuclear Waste Containers, Ali Ebrahimzadeh Pilehrood
Corrosion Research
The disposal of nuclear waste is a demanding topic, and the existing methods, whether it is temporary storage in spent fuel pools or storage in geological repositories, both face the risk of corrosion-related problems. Any failure in these storage methods can potentially lead to the release of radioactive materials into the environment. To avert such catastrophic scenarios, people in the nuclear industry consistently monitor and maintain these storage facilities endlessly and attempt to improve the plans designed to store nuclear waste. Here, I will examine the nuclear waste management organization (NWMO) plan in Canada. Choosing an appropriate location for the …

Corrosion Research
The Kashagan pipeline leaks were likely caused by sulfur stress corrosion cracking, a combined corrosion mechanism developed by the presence of high pressure, the high level of hydrogen sulfide(the main "ingredient" of sour gas), and poor metallurgical choice. Improper welding and poor metallurgical examination were blamed for causing the leaking issue. The purpose of the current review is to raise the alarm about the inappropriate corrosion management of Kashagan oil production and its societal and environmental consequences.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is used in the clinic to improve patient care. While the successes illustrate the impact AI can have, few studies have led to improved clinical outcomes. A gap in translational studies, beginning at the basic science level, exists. In this review, we focus on how AI models implemented in non-orthopedic fields of corrosion science may apply to the study of orthopedic alloys. We first define and introduce fundamental AI concepts and models, as well as physiologically relevant corrosion damage modes. We then systematically review the corrosion/AI literature. Finally, we identify several AI models that may be Preprint …

Mineta Transportation Institute
Bridges are critical components of transportation infrastructure. This research addresses the need to extend the service life of bridges by improving the safety and reliability of bridge abutments and reducing their life-cycle cost and footprints. Mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) is a known strategy to enhance the economy and performance of bridge abutments. In addition, the application of rotary-kiln-manufactured lightweight aggregate backfills improves the performance of MSE bridge abutments with a leaner structural system. Such improvements include a reduction of structural demands due to a lower density, free drainage of granular materials, a high internal friction angle, less settlement with no …

Coating Condition Detection And Assessment On The Steel Girder Of A Bridge Through Hyperspectral Imaging, Pengfei Ma, Jiaoli Li, Ying Zhuo, Pu Jiao, Genda Chen
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The organic coating of bridge steel girders is subjected to physical scratches, corrosion, and aging in natural weathering. The breakdown of the coating may cause serviceability and safety problems if left unnoticed. Conventional coating inspection is time-consuming and lacks information about the coating's chemical integrity. A hyperspectral imaging method is proposed to detect the condition of steel coatings based on coating-responsive features in reflectance spectra. A field test was conducted on the real-world bridge, which shows obvious signs of degradation. The hyperspectral signature enables an assessment of the coating's health and defect severity. The results indicated that the coating scratch …

Development Of Battery Materials To Function As Corrosion Protection On Car Body Plates, Tubagus Noor Rohmannudin, Sulistijono Sulistijono, Noval Adrinanda, Faridz Wira Dharma, Samuel Areliano
Journal of Materials Exploration and Findings
Most car bodies made for mass production are made from steel or aluminum. Both are strong metals, but steel is cheaper than aluminum and is more commonly used in lower-end cars for a broader consumer range. The weakness of steel compared to aluminum is that it is susceptible to corrosion under certain conditions, and thus it may deteriorate over time without proper care. To prevent corrosion, modern cars are coated with paint to prevent direct contact with the environment. As a second line of protection, a car battery can be connected to the body to create an impressed current cathodic …

Investigation Of Oxidation And Corrosion Resistance Of Ni-Based Alloys And Stainless Steels Under Co2 Environments At Elevated Temperatures, Spencer Roy Fultineer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
High mechanical strength integrity, high robustness towards oxidation, and high resistance to carburization under CO2 environments at elevated temperatures are usually required for metallic systems that are employed for power generation. INCONEL 625 is a nickel-based superalloy that started development in the 1950s. This material was designed with the distinct purpose of use in high-temperature and high-pressure systems. While various materials possess the physical properties to handle these conditions, the creation of IN625 addresses the need for a material to withstand the highly corrosive properties of these kinds of environments. In order to evaluate the oxidation and corrosion resistance of …
Intergranular And Pitting Corrosion Mechanisms Of Sensitized Aluminum Alloy Aa5083, Clayton Egleston
Intergranular And Pitting Corrosion Mechanisms Of Sensitized Aluminum Alloy Aa5083, Clayton Egleston
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The motivation and objectives of this project is to examine the mechanisms of intergranular corrosion (IGC) and pitting corrosion of sensitized AA5083. In this regard, different characterization techniques were used, including optical analysis of microstructure, cyclic potentiodynamic polarization with Tafel fitting, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy with electrical equivalent circuit (EEC) fitting, and potentiostatic current transient monitoring. The transition from IGC to pitting corrosion occurs when the grain boundaries become saturated with the β-phase (Mg2Al3). It was found that AA5083 becomes more vulnerable to pitting corrosion as the degree of sensitization increases.

Corrosion Behavior And Mechanisms Of The Heat-Treated Ti5cu Produced By Laser Powder Bed Fusion, Xin Wang, Peng Qin, L. Y. Chen, Hongqi Sun, Laichang Zhang
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This work investigated the corrosion behavior of laser powder bed fusion produced (LPBFed) Ti5Cu and its heat-treated counterparts at 740 and 900 °C (named as HT-740 and HT-900 respectively) in Hank’s solution. The results indicated that the presence of acicular a'-Ti phase in LPBFed Ti5Cu was beneficial to corrosion, but the corrosion resistance of HT-740 and HT-900 were increased owing to the dual-phase microstructure (a'/a-Ti + Ti2Cu) or the increased content of Ti2Cu phase in the microstructure. The Ti2Cu phase could provide an ‘envelope’ protection to the a'/a-Ti phase and slow down the micro-galvanic reaction between a'/a-Ti phase and Ti2Cu …

Corrosion Behavior And Mechanism Of Laser Powder Bed Fusion Produced Cocrw In An Acidic Nacl Solution, P. Qin, L. Y. Chen, Y. J. Liu, C. H. Zhao, Hongqi Sun, Laichang Zhang
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The corrosion behavior and mechanism of the laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) produced CoCrW were investigated in 0.9 wt% NaCl solution with a pH of 2. The corrosion resistance of the alloy increases after 28 days of immersion because of the formed oxide film, which results in the increased corrosion potential and the decreased passivation current density on the potentiodynamic polarization test. The corrosion mechanism of the L-PBF-produced CoCrW could be explained by the melt pool formed from the laser melting process, that the melt pools were “shrinking” by the formation and dissolution of the oxide film.
Understanding Charge Effects On Marked Ball Wear Rates – A Corrosion Study, John Bailey Fletcher
Understanding Charge Effects On Marked Ball Wear Rates – A Corrosion Study, John Bailey Fletcher
Masters Theses
"To measure the wear rates of grinding balls within a ball mill, marked ball wear tests (MBWTs) have been used extensively. Using the wear rates from a MBWT, operators select the most cost-effective media for their grinding application. One factor that a MBWT does not account for is the possible interaction between different media materials which could affect their corrosion rates. Galvanic coupling between dissimilar metals can cause significant changes in their corrosion rates. While galvanic interactions between minerals and grinding media have been studied, the interaction between dissimilar media has not. Corrosion rates and potentials of modern high carbon …
Joining Of Candidate Materials For Lead-Cooled Fast Reactors, Brandon M. Bohanon
Joining Of Candidate Materials For Lead-Cooled Fast Reactors, Brandon M. Bohanon
Nuclear Engineering ETDs
The lead-cooled fast reactor (LFR) is a fourth-generation reactor design characterized by high temperatures, neutron dosage, and highly corrosive and erosive environment due to high flow velocities. Therefore, materials testing must be performed to find structural and system components that withstand this harsh environment. These candidate alloys must have high-temperature creep strength, resistance to damage from fast-spectrum neutrons, and must grow protective oxide layers. FeCrAl alloys have been identified as possessing all these qualities, however, there are limitations due to erosion and the joining of these materials. In this work, mechanical and microstructural properties of base and conventionally joined FeCrAl-based …

Simple Rebar Anchorage Slip Macromodel Considering Corrosion, Ahmad Soraghi, Qindan Huang
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Reinforcement slip in the footing of a reinforced concrete (RC) column can significantly influence the lateral displacement of the column, a critical structural response under lateral loads such as seismic loading. Many past researchers studied and developed models to capture the anchorage slip of rebar; however, there is still a need for a model that can reflect the actual bond-slip relationship (especially in the presence of corrosion) and yet is simple-to-use for structural analysis. In this study, a simple bar stress-slip macromodel is developed to predict reinforcement anchorage slip given a rebar stress. The proposed rebar anchorage slip model is …

An Investigation On The Interface Corrosion Behaviors Of Cobalt Interconnects In Chemical Mechanical Polishing Slurry, Kai-Xuan Qin, Peng-Fei Chang, Yu-Lin Huang, Ming Li, Tao Hang
Journal of Electrochemistry
Cobalt is widely regarded as the most promising interconnect material for 10 nm node and beyond. The development of a chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) slurry suitable for cobalt interconnect is a critical component for the application of cobalt interconnect. During CMP process of the interconnect layer, the achievement of high-quality surface after planarization is greatly challenged by the metal corrosion in CMP slurry. In this contribution, the corrosion behavior of cobalt in a slurry with potassium persulfate (KPS) as an oxidizer, glycine as a complexing agent, and benzotriazole (BTA) as an inhibitor was investigated. Static erosion rates (SER) of cobalt …

Impedance Analysis Of Anodized Aluminum And Structural Bridge Tendons, Justin Silnutzer
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This is a two-part thesis with the overall investigation technique being electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). In the first part, EIS is used to estimate the layer thickness of anodized aluminum oxide. This required the development of an appropriate electrical circuit model; that with parameters that correspond to physical properties of the oxide. In this work, it was found that for thicker oxides of which the outer porous layer is greater than 12 microns, impedance may be used to estimate the outer layer thickness. However, further research is required to understand the role of outer porous layer structure on the impedance …

Wavelet Power And Shannon Entropy Applied To Acoustic Emission Signals For Corrosion Detection And Evaluation Of Reinforced Concrete, Jinrui Zhang, Ziye Kang, Dongshuai Hou, Biqin Dong, Hongyan Ma
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Acoustic emission (AE) signals detected from corrosion test on a steel reinforced concrete beam subjected to the coupling effects of corrosive wet-dry cycles and static load are analyzed by power spectral density, wavelet transform, and Shannon entropy. The degradation process of the corroded reinforced concrete beam can be divided into four stages on the basis of the accumulated event number (AEN). Due to the difference of material properties, steel reinforcement and concrete matrix have distinguished AE features. The time-frequency characteristics of AE signals can reflect the microstructural degradation mechanism of steel corrosion and concrete cracking. The corrosion evaluation entails investigating …
Steel Bridge Coating Inventory For 2022, Christopher Goff, Sudhir Palle
Steel Bridge Coating Inventory For 2022, Christopher Goff, Sudhir Palle
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has replaced the lead-based coatings on many of its steel bridges over the past 30 years. In the 1980s and 1990s, inorganic zinc primers with vinyl topcoats were the go-to option for coating replacement projects. Since 2000, the typical choice for these projects has been organic zinc primers that are part of a two- or three-coat system. Some of these coatings have localized failures in high-stress areas. KYTC’s current inventory of steel bridges numbers over 1,100 structures. Accounting for expected service lives, to properly maintain protective coatings on these bridges will require the Cabinet to …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Many models have been developed in the past to predict the failure pressure of a pipeline with a single corrosion defect. However, most of the existing models are conservative and may lead to unnecessary repairs and maintenance in the pipeline risk management. The aim of this study is to develop probabilistic failure pressure prediction models that are suitable for risk assessment of corroded pipelines. The proposed models are developed at three levels of pipe ultimate strength based on a comprehensive database (consist of both experimental and numerical data) established in this study. When comparing with the existing models, it is …
