Investigation Into Mine Pillar Design And Global Stability Using The Ground Reaction Curve Concept, Ravi Chandan Ray
Investigation Into Mine Pillar Design And Global Stability Using The Ground Reaction Curve Concept, Ravi Chandan Ray
Theses and Dissertations--Mining Engineering
Pillars form an important support structure in any underground mine. A bulk of the overburden load is borne by the mine pillars. Thus, the strength of pillars has been a subject of detailed research over more than 6 decades. This work has led to the development of largely empirical pillar design formulations that have reduced the risk of pillar failures and mine collapse. Current research, however, has drawn attention to the fact that some of the assumptions used in the development of conventional pillar design methodologies are not always valid. Conventional pillar design methodology assumes that the pillars carry the …

Humans are able to provide symbolic knowledge in structured form for potential use by an AI system in learning human-desirable concepts. In clinical settings, for instance, prediction of patient outcomes by an AI can be guided by knowledge from patient history. This history contains concepts such as treatment information, observational and drug-related information, mental health conditions, and severity of disease/disorder. Additionally, there is also often a certain graphical structure to the knowledge among the concepts, for example, ”patient symptoms cause certain tests to be taken”, which in turn affects the prescription of medication. This type of structure between human interpretable …

Bitbilliards, Grant Reinbolt
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The goal of the project is to create a billiards table capable of keeping track of the score while simultaneously racking the sunk balls under the table. To achieve this, image processing will be utilized to detect and determine which balls are above and below the table. Upon leaving the table, the balls will be held by gates to prevent the cue ball from entering the re-racking track. The balls will then enter the track and form a queue to be placed back into the triangle underneath the table. A gantry system consisting of an x and y axis will …
Methods For Film Coating Electrospun Fibers, Kristopher Dejean

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Electrospinning uses high voltages to form polymer nanofiber membranes. These membranes have potential for use in filtration, tissue engineering, drug delivery, and catalysis. The nonwoven fiber mat is malleable but has a low tensile strength compared to a solid film of the same polymer. Joining the fibers with a thin film is desired to balance the strength and flexibility. Three methods of producing a film on fiber membrane were tested. The techniques are spraying then melting, spin coating, and dip coating. Electrospinning setup conditions, solvent ratios, damage to fibers, and spin coating speeds were determined. Research was abruptly stopped and …

Finding A Single Equation To Represent Urea Evaporation, Sublimation, And Decomposition In Selective Catalytic Reduction Systems, Noah Hertzler
Finding A Single Equation To Represent Urea Evaporation, Sublimation, And Decomposition In Selective Catalytic Reduction Systems, Noah Hertzler
Senior Honors Theses
Aqueous Urea used in Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) Systems undergoes three sequential processes that result in ammonia being produced to reduce harmful NOx emissions: Water evaporation, Urea sublimation, and Urea decomposition into ammonia and isocyanic acid. While these phases can be simplified by modeling the Urea as pure water, accuracy is sacrificed to do so. In order to make SCR modelling both accurate and simple, this project set out to find an equation that could represent all three processes. Simulations were run in ANSYS and Particle to generate a set of data, then an empirical equation was created to model …

End-To-End Prediction Of Weld Penetration In Real Time Based On Deep Learning, Wenhua Jiao
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
Welding is an important joining technique that has been automated/robotized. In automated/robotic welding applications, however, the parameters are preset and are not adaptively adjusted to overcome unpredicted disturbances, which cause these applications to not be able to meet the standards from welding/manufacturing industry in terms of quality, efficiency, and individuality. Combining information sensing and processing with traditional welding techniques is a significant step toward revolutionizing the welding industry. In practical welding, the weld penetration as measured by the back-side bead width is a critical factor when determining the integrity of the weld produced. However, the back-side bead width is difficult …

Thermal Atomization Due To Boiling During Droplet Impingement On Superhydrophobic Surfaces, Preston Todd Emerson
Thermal Atomization Due To Boiling During Droplet Impingement On Superhydrophobic Surfaces, Preston Todd Emerson
Theses and Dissertations
Superhydrophobic (SH) surfaces are characterized by their extraordinary water repellent qualities. When water comes in contact with these surfaces, it beads up and rolls around. This phenomenon is due partially to surface chemistry which promotes weak adhesive forces between liquid and solid. However, micro- and nanoscale surface roughness also plays a crucial role by trapping air beneath the liquid, reducing liquid-solid contact. Many advantages of these surfaces have been identified, including drag reduction and self-cleaning properties, and the body of research regarding them has grown rapidly over the past few decades. This thesis is concerned with water droplets impinging superheated, superhydrophobic …

Combining Laser Aided Ablation And Polishing To Minimize Surface Roughness Of Additively Manufactured Aluminium Components, Sahil Bipinkumar Patel
Combining Laser Aided Ablation And Polishing To Minimize Surface Roughness Of Additively Manufactured Aluminium Components, Sahil Bipinkumar Patel
Masters Theses
“The surface roughness of additively manufactured parts is much higher than the acceptable range for most applications, thus post-processing is needed to qualify these parts for use. Laser polishing can be used to bring the surface roughness in an admissible range, but if the initial roughness is very high then the energy density for the polishing process needs to be very high to achieve a significant reduction in roughness. This high energy density can produce many process defects. Also, laser polishing alone cannot get rid of high wavelength asperities. Any waviness in the part can be linked with initial waviness …

Applications Of Drones In Atmospheric Chemistry, Travis J. Schuyler
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
The emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs) has changed the composition of the atmosphere during the Anthropocene. A major technical and scientific challenge is quantifying the resulting fugitive trace gas fluxes under variable meteorological conditions. Accurately documenting the sources and magnitude of GHGs emission is an important undertaking for discriminating contributions of different processes to radiative forcing. Therefore, the adverse environmental and health effects of undetected gas leaks motivates new methods of detecting, characterizing, and quantifying plumes of fugitive trace gases. Currently, there is no mobile platform able to quantify trace gases at altitudes(UASs), or drones, can be deployed on-site in …

Novel Device For Measuring Lung Function Using Oscillometry, Gregory S. Roy, Nirav Daphtary, Jason H.T. Bates
Larner College of Medicine Fourth Year Advanced Integration Teaching/Scholarly Projects
The forced oscillation technique (FOT) is a non-invasive means of measuring lung mechanics. Broad-band oscillations in flow are delivered to the lungs while the resultant pressure oscillations are recorded. These signals are processed to yield the input impedance of the respiratory system (Zrs), which encapsulates the mechanical properties of the lung over the frequency range spanned by the oscillations. Clinically, can be used to assess pulmonary pathologies such as asthma and COPD. Standard methods of performing FOT are limited to the non-ambulatory clinical setting. Production of a light-weight device that operates without an external power source would allow real-time measurements …

Tolerance Intervals For Time Series Models And Specifying Trimming/Winsorizing Cutoffs, Kedai Cheng
Theses and Dissertations--Statistics
Confidence intervals are used to capture a parameter of interest, usually a mean or a quantile, at a specified confidence level. Prediction intervals are another practical interval that aim at making sound predictions of future values with some confidence. Although these are useful inference tools, neither of them gives people a plausible range of the sampled population. Tolerance intervals are such an inference tool that captures a specified proportion of the sampled population at a predetermined confidence level. In this dissertation, tolerance intervals for an autoregressive process with order p are constructed. In addition, a method of utilizing tolerance interval …
