In electrode double layer capacitor (EDLC), electrodes usually contain binder materials to provide adhesion between electrode materials. However, binder materials usually bring unwanted resistances to the component due to their non-conductivity properties and the occupation of ion cavities. The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate the feasibility of fabricating electrodes for EDLCs by using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene oxide (GO) without using any binding materials. At the same time, investigating the binder-free electrode’s electrochemical properties and make an assumption of its potential application in the future.

We demonstrate the ability to simulate targeted excitation of atomistic systems using our real-time TDDFT-based simulation framework NESSIE. Traditional ap- proaches for extracting spectra through real-time TDDFT involves excitation of all frequencies via impulse requiring long simulation times and yielding poor resolution. By exciting the system with a modulated sinc pulse between the frequencies of inter- est we are able to obtain a spectral response with far more precision in a significantly shorter time frame than competing implementations.

Low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs) have a higher mortality-to-incidence ratio for breast cancer compared to high-income countries (HICs) because of late-stage diagnosis. Mammography screening is recommended for early diagnosis, however, current screening guidelines are only generalized by economic disparities, and are based on extrapolation of data from randomized controlled trials in HICs, which have different disease burdens and all-cause mortality compared to LMICs. Moreover, the infrastructure capacity in LMICs is far below that needed for adopting current screening guidelines. Cold spray is an additive manufacturing method in which powder particles are accelerated through a supersonic nozzle and impinged upon a nearby substrate, provided they reach their so-called critical velocity. True to its name, the cold spray process employs lower particle temperatures than other thermal spray processes while the particle velocities are comparably high. Because bonding occurs mostly in the solid state and at high speeds, cold spray deposits are distinguished for having low porosity and low residual stresses which nearly match those of the bulk material.

Most modern inertial sensing units rely on MicroElectroMechanical systems (MEMS) style gyroscopic sensors to determine angular acceleration. This research investigates a novel gyroscopic sensing technology that uses mechanical precision of magnetic nanoparticles, instead of MEMS, to determine inertial measurements. The performance of cryogenic liquid hydrogen neutron moderators at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) is significantly impacted by the ratio of orthohydrogen and parahydrogen present in the moderator vessels. High parahydrogen (>99%) content is desirable for peak brightness and consistent neutronic performance. Liquid hydrogen will naturally stabilize to a high parahydrogen ratio, but the conversion requires 3-7 days to complete (the “satisfactory” parahydrogen level varies between various beamline instruments). A single emitter ionic liquid ion source using porous borosilicate glass was developed. Two emitters with different radii of curvatures were tested using 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EMI-BF4). I-V curves of the currents on the extractor electrode and a collector plate were obtained for potential differences between the emitter and the extractor ranging from 0 V to 3500 V. For the first emitter chip, extraction began near 2400 V. The highest emission current measured on the first chip was 80 µA at 3500 V with an interception current on the extractor of 4.86 µA. Most large-scale material-extrusion (MatEx) AM systems utilize a single screw extruder. Simulating flow rate and operating pressures of extrusion systems is notoriously difficult without resorting to full finite element analysis due to the phase change and non-Newtonian nature of relevant polymers. This study characterized two machines of interest: a Big Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM) system and a Randcastle Microtruder. This thesis presents the use of diblock copolymers, poly(butadiene)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PBm PEOn) and poly(isoprene)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PImPEOn), as amphiphilic molecular building blocks for the formation of synthetic polymer bilayer membranes using the droplet interface bilayer (DIB) technique. The DIB technique makes use of the self-assembly of amphiphilic macromolecules along oil-water droplet interfaces that can then be physically connected for the construction of liquid supported macromolecular bilayers at the droplet interface.
