Thermal Lattice Boltzmann Simulation For Multispecies Fluid Equilibration, Linda L. Vahala, Darren Wah, George Vahala, Jonathan Carter, Pavol Pavlo Jul 2000

Thermal Lattice Boltzmann Simulation For Multispecies Fluid Equilibration, Linda L. Vahala, Darren Wah, George Vahala, Jonathan Carter, Pavol Pavlo

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The equilibration rate for multispecies fluids is examined using thermal lattice Boltzmann simulations. Two-dimensional free-decay simulations are performed for effects of velocity shear layer turbulence on sharp temperature profiles. In particular, parameters are so chosen that the lighter species is turbulent while the heavier species is laminar-and so its vorticity layers would simply decay and diffuse in time. With species coupling, however, there is velocity equilibration followed by the final relaxation to one large co- and one large counter-rotating vortex. The temperature equilibration proceeds on a slower time scale and is in good agreement with the theoretical order of magnitude …

Design Of Adaptive Sliding Mode Fuzzy Control For Robot Manipulator Based On Extended Kalman Filter, Abdelrahman Aledhaibi Jul 2000

Design Of Adaptive Sliding Mode Fuzzy Control For Robot Manipulator Based On Extended Kalman Filter, Abdelrahman Aledhaibi

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In this work, a new adaptive motion control scheme for robust performance control of robot manipulators is presented. The proposed scheme is designed by combining the fuzzy logic control with the sliding mode control based on extended Kalman filter. Fuzzy logic controllers have been used successfully in many applications and were shown to be superior to the classical controllers for some nonlinear systems. Sliding mode control is a powerful approach for controlling nonlinear and uncertain systems. It is a robust control method and can be applied in the presence of model uncertainties and parameter disturbances, provided that the bounds of …

A Flowchart Structure For Modification Of A Modsim Process Model, Murali K. Adatrao Jul 2000

A Flowchart Structure For Modification Of A Modsim Process Model, Murali K. Adatrao

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

There are many software processes and software development models that support the development of a software model prior to implementation. However, more often than not, these practices are not followed resulting in a lack of documentation of the intended functionality of the software. As a result, software often becomes a black box for later developers. Even a simple bug fix can turn into an exhaustive task for the developers, as they must attempt to infer the intended system behavior. New designers cannot make any changes to the software or extend the software behavior, as the underlying model within the software …

Validation Of Passive Air Sampling Monitors Onboard United States Navy Submarines, Larry A. Mcfarland

Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations

An operating submarine creates a unique air quality mixture of compounds that result from a combination of human metabolism, construction materials, materials brought onboard and compounds created through the interaction of ship systems. A comprehensive study of submarine atmospheres is ongoing during deployments of U.S. Navy nuclear submarines. As part of the overall effort, a paired air sampling comparison field validation was conducted to compare the air sampling effectiveness of passive diffusive monitors compared to more traditional active air sampling methods when sampling for acrolein, formaldehyde and ozone in the enclosed submarine atmosphere. Acrolein monitors containing 2-hydroxymethylpiperidine (HMP) impregnated glass …

Resolution Of Overlapping Spectra By Wavelength Modulation Spectroscopy, Audra Michiele Bullock Jul 2000

Resolution Of Overlapping Spectra By Wavelength Modulation Spectroscopy, Audra Michiele Bullock

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Wavelength modulation absorption spectroscopy is a highly sensitive, non-intrusive technique for probing gaseous species, which employs the well-known principles of modulation spectroscopy in a novel way. With this technique, parameters such as velocity, density, and temperature can be measured with a high degree of precision. The research presented here shows that wavelength modulation is a convenient means of increasing the sensitivity of an absorption spectroscopy measurement because it allows for harmonic detection. The focus of the dissertation is resolution of overlapping spectra by harmonic detection and the advantages gained by performing detection at the higher harmonics, e.g., sixth and eighth. …

Pulsed Optoacoustics In Solids, Zibiao Wei Apr 2000

Pulsed Optoacoustics In Solids, Zibiao Wei

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Optoacoustic techniques are widely used to probe and characterize target materials including solids, liquids and gases. Included in such applications are diagnoses of thin films and semiconductor materials. The need to obtain greater spatial resolution requires the generation of shorter optoacoustic pulses. For such pulses, non-thermal effects may be quite important. On the other hand, even when an optoacoustic pulse is generated by an initially non-thermal technique, the thermal aspects become important in its evolution and propagation. The research undertaken in this Ph.D. dissertation included the generation and detection of optoacoustic signals through the thermal elastic mechanism. Several applications in …

Curvilinear Interface Methodology For Finite-Element Applications, Ollie James Rose Apr 2000

Curvilinear Interface Methodology For Finite-Element Applications, Ollie James Rose

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Recent trends in design and manufacturing suggest a tendency toward multiple centers of specialty which results in a need for improved integration methodology for dissimilar finite element or CFD meshes. Since a typical finite element or CFD analysis requires about 50% of an engineers effort to be devoted to modeling and input, there is a need to advance the state-of-the-art in modeling, methodology. These two trends indicate a need to for the capability to combine independently-modeled configurations in an automated and robust way without the need for global remodeling. One approach to addressing this need is the development of interfacing …

Theory Of Sic Schottky Barrier Conduction And Model Analysis For Diode Breakdown With And Without Screw Dislocations, Lifeng Zheng

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Silicon Carbide is a very promising candidate for applications in high-power, high-temperature, and high-radiation conditions under which conventional semiconductors cannot perform adequately. However, the SiC processing technology has not yet reached maturity. There is also limited knowledge of its physical and chemical characteristics, and its device behavior is not well understood. The aim of this thesis is to analyze two specific problems in the SiC area. The first issue involves the large discrepancy between experimental I - V characteristics of SiC Schottky diodes and their theoretical values. The observed data, especially at low voltages, is found to be orders of …

Compressible Flow Modeling In A Low Pressure Natural Gas Fuel Injector, Eugene D. White Jr. Apr 2000

Compressible Flow Modeling In A Low Pressure Natural Gas Fuel Injector, Eugene D. White Jr.

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In 1997, Siemens Automotive in Newport News, Virginia, conducted mass flow experiments on their DEKA IV natural gas fuel injector using nitrogen gas as the test fluid. The mass flow rates measured from the steady state flow experiments increased linearly with increasing upstream reservoir pressure. This relationship in the experimental data suggested that a choked flow condition must exist somewhere inside the injector.

To test this hypothesis, nitrogen gas flow through the internal passages of a fuel injector at steady state was simulated using computational fluid dynamics software. Several numerical models were constructed. Axisymmetric two-dimensional models were constructed of the …

Diffusion Problems In Wound Healing And A Scattering Approach To Immune System Interactions, Julia Suzanne Arnold Apr 2000

Diffusion Problems In Wound Healing And A Scattering Approach To Immune System Interactions, Julia Suzanne Arnold

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

A theoretical model for the existence of a Critical Size Defect (CSD) in certain animals is the focus of the majority of this dissertation. Adam [1] recently developed a one-dimensional model of this phenomenon, and chapters I–V address the exist the CSD in a two-dimensional model and a three-dimensional model. The two dimensional (or 1-d circular) model is the more appropriate for a study of CSD's. In that model we assume a circular wound of uniform depth and develop a time-independent form of the diffusion equation relevant to the study of the CSD phenomenon. It transpires that the range of …

A Generic Object-Oriented Server Model, Brian Douglas Jones Apr 2000

A Generic Object-Oriented Server Model, Brian Douglas Jones

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this paper is to introduce a generic, object-oriented model for the simulation of networks of queues. Generic simulation modeling provides robust ways of laying out processes in stochastic, event driven simulations. The approach taken is to define a methodology that will be implementation independent, termed the Generic Server Simulation Model (GSSM); thus, leaving the implementers to choose the best (most suited for their use) means of implementation. GSSM uses many object-oriented concepts to provide its basic structure and has in its design the ability to take advantage of these object-oriented concepts, including reuse of (existing) code. GSSM …

A Comparison Of Quasi-Static Indentation Testing To Low Velocity Impact Testing, Michael J. Douglas Apr 2000

A Comparison Of Quasi-Static Indentation Testing To Low Velocity Impact Testing, Michael J. Douglas

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A static test method for modeling low-velocity foreign object impact events to composites would prove to be very beneficial to researchers since much more data can be obtained from a static test than from an impact test. In order to examine if this is feasible, a series of static indentation and low velocity impact tests were carried out and compared. Square specimens of many sizes and thicknesses were utilized to cover the array of types of low velocity impact events. Laminates with a rt/4 stacking sequence were employed since this is by far the most common type of engineering laminate. …

An Integrated Engineering-Computation Framework For Collaborative Engineering: An Application In Project Management, Hisham Mohamed El-Sayed Abdelsalam

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Today's engineering applications suffer from a severe integration problem. Engineering, the entire process, consists of a myriad of individual, often complex, tasks. Most computer tools support particular tasks in engineering, but the output of one tool is different from the others'. Thus, the users must re-enter the relevant information in the format required by another tool. Moreover, usually in the development process of a new product/process, several teams of engineers with different backgrounds/responsibilities are involved, for example mechanical engineers, cost estimators, manufacturing engineers, quality engineers, and project manager. Engineers need a tool(s) to share technical and managerial information and to …

Electroporation Dynamics In Biological Cells Subjected To Ultrafast Electrical Pulses: A Numerical Simulation Study, R. P. Joshi, K. H. Schoenbach Jan 2000

Electroporation Dynamics In Biological Cells Subjected To Ultrafast Electrical Pulses: A Numerical Simulation Study, R. P. Joshi, K. H. Schoenbach

Bioelectrics Publications

A model analysis of electroporation dynamics in biological cells has been carried out based on the Smoluchowski equation. Results of the cellular response to short, electric pulses are presented, taking account of the growth and resealing dynamics of transient aqueous pores. It is shown that the application of large voltages alone may not be sufficient to cause irreversible breakdown, if the time duration is too short. Failure to cause irreversible damage at small pulse widths could be attributed to the time inadequacy for pores to grow and expand beyond a critical threshold radius. In agreement with earlier studies, it is …

Soapbox: The Academic Research Fleet: An Exciting Time For Renewal, Larry Atkinson

CCPO Publications

(First Paragraph) Academic research ships in the United States are the envy of many scientists around the world. A great strength of our system is the diversity of ships and operators: users have a choice, the system can change. A weakness of the system is that very diversity: sometimes it is hard for us to act together. Nevertheless, we now must act together. The vitality of the academic fleet in the coming decades is at stake. The reason is simply because many of our ships, especially in the intermediate size range, will soon reach the end of their useful life.

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper describes the development of parametric models for estimating operational reliability and maintainability characteristics for reusable launch vehicle concepts, based on vehicle size and technology support level. A reliability and maintainability analysis tool (RMAT) and response surface methods are utilized to build parametric approximation models for rapidly estimating operational reliability and maintainability characteristics such as mission completion reliability. These models that approximate RMAT, can then be utilized for fast analysis of operational requirements, for lifecycle cost estimating and for multidisciplinary design optimization.

After deposition, by evaporation under vacuum, of Al/Cu/Te, multilayer structures, annealing at 673 K or more for half an hour, under argon flow, allows CuAlTe2 films crystallized in the chalcopyrite structure to be obtained. The optical and electrical properties are interpreted by introducing the influence of impurity foreign phases present in the films. The optical properties are sensitive to the small Al2O3 domains randomly distributed into the CuAlTe2 polycrystalline matrix. The optical band gap is slightly increased (2.35 eV) by the presence of alumina. The conductivity measurements show that a short circuit effect can be induced by a binary Cu2-xTe …

Textured films of molybdenum disulfide have been obtained by solid state reaction between the constituents in thin films form when a (200) oriented tungsten sheet is used as substrate. The crystallites have their c axis perpendicular to the plane of the substrate. The annealing conditions are T=1073K and t=30 min. The films are stoichoimetric and p type. Such highly textured films are achieved without foreign atom addition (Ni, Co...). It appears, as shown by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, that a thin WS2 layer is present at the interface W/MoS2. The crystallization process is discussed by a …

Applications Of Wavelet Transforms In Biomedical Optoacoustics, Zibiao Wei, Shujun Yang, Amin N. Dharamsi, Barbara Hargrave Jan 2000

Applications Of Wavelet Transforms In Biomedical Optoacoustics, Zibiao Wei, Shujun Yang, Amin N. Dharamsi, Barbara Hargrave

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

We discuss the utility of wavelet transform methods in signal processing in general, and in particular, demonstrate the technique in optoacoustic applications. In several optoacoustic experiments with different samples, we have successfully enhanced the signal to noise ratios. Wavelet transforms optimize resolution by utilizing a tailored, variable time-window in different frequency regions. The technique's great advantage lies in the fact that the wavelet transform adds some redundancy to the original signal, and some desired features can be enhanced in the transformed space. In addition, proper choice of the basis set allows a sparse representation of the signal. Therefore, even when …
