Sonic Boom Prediction Using Euler/Full Potential Methodology, Isik Ali Ozcer Oct 2005

Sonic Boom Prediction Using Euler/Full Potential Methodology, Isik Ali Ozcer

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Sonic Booms of two different bodies, a double cone configuration and a modified F-SE aircraft, are predicted using Euler solvers for the near field, and a Full Potential Propagation method for the far field. The problem is considered inviscid since viscous effects in high Reynolds number flows are negligible in Sonic Boom propagation. To enhance the accuracy of the predictions, elaborate shock fitting and grid adaptation routines are developed that can handle complicated shock topologies. The far field propagation code using the full potential equation is the first three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics code in literature that can march the solution …

New Methodology For Robust Control System Design And Analysis For Single Parameter Uncertain Systems, Charles J. Player Oct 2005

New Methodology For Robust Control System Design And Analysis For Single Parameter Uncertain Systems, Charles J. Player

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Due to the conservative nature of the standard singular value robustness tests there is ambiguity in the results that they provide. The tests only establish a sufficient condition and therefore provide little insight to the stability robustness of a system that fails the test. However, for a single parameter uncertain system that is modeled using structured uncertainty, an Evans root locus can be derived that shows how system closed-loop poles change with the magnitude of the single parameter uncertainty. This technique provides clear stability robustness insight. Further, another Evans root locus can be derived that shows how system closed-loop zeros …

An Analysis Of A Finite Element Human Brain In Low Speed Rear Impact Automobile Collision Comparison, Model Development And Study Using Tno Rear Impact Dummy, Mangesh S. Kadam

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

According to the National Safety Council, rear-end collisions are the most common types of collisions with approximately two and a half million cases reported every year. Crash tests indicate a change of vehicle velocity of 4km/h (2.5 mph) may produce occupant symptoms. Vehicle damage may not occur until 14-15km/h (8.7 mph) (Davis CG, 1998). Occupants, in rear-end vehicle impacts sustain a motion associated with whiplash, where the head snaps backwards quickly, resulting in linear and/or angular acceleration forces acting on the brain. This angular motion tends to subject the brain to shear deformations from rapid rotation. This study is a …

Complexity Measure Of A Product Or Process By Application Of Fuzzy Multi-Attribute Utility Theory, Shrikant Chandrakant Nagpure Oct 2005

Complexity Measure Of A Product Or Process By Application Of Fuzzy Multi-Attribute Utility Theory, Shrikant Chandrakant Nagpure

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

During the early phases of design, the development cost of complex products or systems is very difficult to obtain because of the uncertainties related to their work breakdown structures and the wide choice of manufacturing technologies with no historical data specific to these products. This thesis presents a method to derive a complexity index to capture the non-additive property and inherent uncertainty, i.e. fuzziness, of the technologies that could be used for complex objects. This complexity index can then be used as a cost index for comparing various candidate manufacturing processes.

Macros are written in Microsoft Excel to establish a …

Ozone Concentration In An Atmospheric Pressure Air Plasma Jet, Srinivas Reddy Suddala Oct 2005

Ozone Concentration In An Atmospheric Pressure Air Plasma Jet, Srinivas Reddy Suddala

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A stable micro-plasma jet in air was generated from a direct current discharge between two molybdenum electrodes (0.25 mm thick) that were separated by an alumina insulator of the same thickness. The after-glow plasma jet was generated by blowing air through the space between the electrodes. A change from laminar to turbulent flow was observed at a gas flow rate of 140 ml/min. The length of the plasma jet increased with flow rate in the laminar mode to approximately 15 mm and decreased in the turbulent mode.

Increasing the gas flow rate up to 200 ml/min at a constant discharge …

Numerical Integration Strategy For Generating Root Migration Diagrams, Deepak H. Panduranga Oct 2005

Numerical Integration Strategy For Generating Root Migration Diagrams, Deepak H. Panduranga

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Evans root locus is a graphical method for analyzing or designing the stability and performance of a single channel closed-loop system. The method consists of plotting the locus of closed-loop characteristic equation roots in the complex plane as the loop gain parameter is varied over a wide range of values. Several methods for plotting the root locus graph exist and can be mainly classified into two types: analytical methods and numerical methods. The most common numerical method is based on polynomial factoring or root solving. A less common, alternative method for generating the root locus graph is based on numerical …

Support For A Delivery Train Based Material Handling Mechanism, Sai P. Boyedapu Oct 2005

Support For A Delivery Train Based Material Handling Mechanism, Sai P. Boyedapu

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Modeling a delivery train system is more challenging than traditional forklift systems as the delivery train model consists of a tugger, cart and a controller that combine to deliver materials within a manufacturing plant. Also, the decision logic for selection of carts and tuggers, joining of loads to particular delivery trains is more complicated than forklift systems. Simulation software such as Arena, Automod and Flexsim do not provide direct support for modeling delivery train systems.

In this thesis, an object-oriented, platform and language independent model of a delivery train was designed. The model was then implemented as an extension to …

Dream: A Theoretical Analysis, Xueying Qi Jul 2005

Dream: A Theoretical Analysis, Xueying Qi

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

A Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET, for short) is a collection of mobile nodes deployed in support of a short-lived special-purpose operation. Examples include search-and-rescue missions, law-enforcement, multimedia classrooms, and among many others. Unlike cellular or satellite networks, MANET do not rely on any form of pre-existing infrastructure. The mobility of nodes combined with the lack of infrastructure makes routing in MANET notoriously difficult. It was recently suggested that routing in MANET can use to advantage geographic information that the nodes may acquire either by endowing them with a GPS chip or simply by using known localization algorithms. Distance Routing Effect …

Non-Linear And Linear Transformations Of Features For Robust Speech Recognition And Speaker Identification, Saurabh Prasad Jul 2005

Non-Linear And Linear Transformations Of Features For Robust Speech Recognition And Speaker Identification, Saurabh Prasad

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Automatic speech recognizers perform poorly when training and test data are systematically different in terms of noise and channel characteristics. One manifestation of such differences is variations in the probability density functions (pdfs) between training and test features. Consequently, both automatic speech recognition and automatic speaker identification may be severely degraded. Previous attempts to mm1m1ze this problem include Cepstral Mean and Variance Normalization and transforming all speech features to a uni-variate Gaussian pdf. In this thesis, two techniques are presented for non-linearly scaling speech features to fit them to a target pdf - the first is based on the principles …

Design And Fabrication Of A Prototype Fabry-Perot Cavity For The Compton Polarimeter Upgrade At Jefferson Lab, Deepa Deepa

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Upcoming experiments at Hall A at Jefferson lab require 1 % absolute accuracy of the electron beam polarization measurement at 0.85 Ge V energy. The Compton polarimeter at Hall A is capable of measuring beam polarization with 3 - 4 % accuracies at this beam energy. Hence it was proposed to upgrade the present Compton by doubling the laser frequency [2]. The present Compton polarimeter operates with a 1064 nm, continuous wave laser at 200 mW. This power is enhanced to 1.5 kW using a 0.85 m long Fabry-Perot Cavity. Changing to 532 nm laser with the same power would …

Fine-Tuning Of Mass-Spring Model Properties For Simulating Realistic Soft Body Deformation, Sylva A. Girtelschmid Jul 2005

Fine-Tuning Of Mass-Spring Model Properties For Simulating Realistic Soft Body Deformation, Sylva A. Girtelschmid

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Obtaining a well behaved soft-tissue model is one of the most challenging and important tasks in the development of surgical simulation systems. Achieving both accurate and real-time deformation response from a soft-tissue model becomes more difficult as the complexity of the represented anatomy and the degree of deformation increases. One common approach to modeling deformable objects is the Mass-Spring (MS) system method. Mass-Spring systems are attractive to real-time applications due to their relatively low computational requirement and ease of implementation. However, their parameter determination is typically done manually, which becomes tedious when accurate approximation to real-world objects is desired. This …

Monte Carlo Simulation Analysis Of Electron Bombardment Of Gallium Nitride For Particle Detector Applications, James Gibson Bolitho

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Gallium Nitride (GaN) is a relatively new and promising semiconductor material. It is finding its place in commercial applications such as transistors, light-emitting diodes, and in blue lasers. The large bandgap of GaN allows for very low canier densities and high breakdown voltages. This combination results in a greatly reduced background current and noise, and can withstand large applied voltages. In addition, GaN is sturdy and has strong mechanical properties. These are all ideal characteristics for application in high-energy particle detection.

In this thesis, the central goal is to assess the response of a GaN-based particle detector through numerical modeling. …

Mobility-Pattern Based Localization Update Algorithm For Mobile Wireless Sensor Networks, Mohammad Yacoub Al-Laho Jul 2005

Mobility-Pattern Based Localization Update Algorithm For Mobile Wireless Sensor Networks, Mohammad Yacoub Al-Laho

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In mobile wireless sensor networks, sensors move in the monitored area at any direction and speed. Unlike many other networking hosts, sensor nodes do not have global addresses. They are often identified by using a location-based addressing scheme. Therefore, it is important to have the knowledge of the sensor location indicating where the data came from. In this thesis, three localization update algorithms were designed, Specifically, a sensor movement is divided into three states: Pause, Linear, and Random. Each state adopts different localization update algorithm. Since complex movement involves different mobility patterns, a state transition model is developed to …

Passive photonic devices in silicon such as waveguides, couplers and splitters have been developed. Photonic devices must be compatible with standard silicon CMOS fabrication processing in order to achieve the integration. Since CMOS fabrication involves a myriad of process steps, it is important to study the effect of processing on photonic devices. Oxidation and etching, two fundamental processes in silicon technology, are utilized in this thesis to model their effects on silicon photonic …

Investigation Of The Superconducting Properties Of Niobium Radio-Frequency Cavities, Gianluigi Ciovati Jul 2005

Investigation Of The Superconducting Properties Of Niobium Radio-Frequency Cavities, Gianluigi Ciovati

Physics Theses & Dissertations

Radio-frequency (rf) superconducting cavities are widely used to increase the energy of a charged particle beam in particle accelerators. The maximum gradients of cavities made of bulk niobium have constantly improved over the last ten years and they are approaching the theoretical limit of the material. Nevertheless, rf tests of niobium cavities are still showing some "anomalous" losses (so-called "Q-drop"), characterized by a marked increase of the surface resistance at high rf fields, in absence of field emission. A low temperature "in-situ" baking under ultra-high vacuum has been successfully applied by several laboratories to reduce those losses and …

Computational Sensing And Closed-Loop Active Flow Control Of Airfoil At Post-Stall Conditions, Volkan Kamaci Jul 2005

Computational Sensing And Closed-Loop Active Flow Control Of Airfoil At Post-Stall Conditions, Volkan Kamaci

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Flow separation over lifting aerodynamic components, such as airfoils and wings, occurs during stall conditions which are caused by adverse changes (i.e. high angle of attack, inflow conditions, etc.) in the operating conditions of aerodynamic components. During stall conditions, the flow over airfoil loses its momentum, creating high pressure zones on the upper surface of the airfoil and even a small increase in pressure causes the fluid particles to stop and separate to a low pressure zone. In order to eliminate the flow separation, the low momentum flow should be removed in order to maintain the high momentum and low …

A Feature Specific Modular Approach For Pose And Illumination Invariant Face Recognition, Praveen Sankaran

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A feature specific modular-PCA (Principal Component Analysis) approach on face images in multiple views for pose and illumination invariant face recognition is presented in this thesis. Principal components are extracted from different sub-modules of the image and are concatenated to make a single signature vector to represent a face region in a particular viewing angle. Additional principal components are extracted horn image regions representing key facial feature and are added as an extension of the signature vector. Feature specific modular-PCA approach is capable of recognizing faces in varying illumination conditions and facial expressions as the modular components represent the local …

Strategies For Analysis Of Unimodal And Multimodal Data For Simulation, Anshul Rai Sharma Jul 2005

Strategies For Analysis Of Unimodal And Multimodal Data For Simulation, Anshul Rai Sharma

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The primary objective of this thesis is to provide strategies for analysis for data associated with simulation. Data analysis is an important part of the simulation process. Typically more stress is laid upon the development of the computer simulation while the data analysis takes a back seat. However, the accuracy of a simulation depends on the data driving it. In other words, any simulation is only as accurate as the input data fed into the simulation. Also, the output of simulation should be analyzed properly in order to validly estimate the performance of the system being simulated. The focus of …

A Multiplier-Less Architecture For High Speed Computation Of Multi-Dimensional Convolution, Ming Zhu Zhang Jul 2005

A Multiplier-Less Architecture For High Speed Computation Of Multi-Dimensional Convolution, Ming Zhu Zhang

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

One of the most computationally intensive operations in digital image/video processing systems is multi-dimensional convolution. Every image/video processor needs the convolution module in its pre-processing stage. Fast and efficient design of the convolution module in an application specific system is a great challenge in VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration) design. Convolution operator requires a large set of multipliers and accumulators. A high precision multiplier takes enormous amount of VLSI area and it consumes more power. Hence reduction of the number of multipliers is another important challenge in VLSI design. A multiplier-less architecture for the design of a multi-dimensional convolution module …

Opal: In Vivo Based Preservation Framework For Locating Lost Web Pages, Terry L. Harrison

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

We present Opal, a framework for interactively locating missing web pages (http status code 404). Opal is an example of "in vivo" preservation: harnessing the collective behavior of web archives, commercial search engines, and research projects for the purpose of preservation. Opal servers learn from their experiences and are able to share their knowledge with other Opal servers using the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). Using cached copies that can be found on the web, Opal creates lexical signatures which are then used to search for similar versions of the web page. Using the OAI-PMH to facilitate …

Active Control Of Large Amplitude Nonlinear Free Vibrations And Nonlinear Supersonic Panel Flutter Of Beams And Composite Plates Using Piezoelectric Self-Sensing Actuators, Qinqin Li

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This thesis employs a coupled structural-electrical finite element modal formulation for the control of nonlinear free vibrations, and supersonic panel flutter of beams and composite plates with and without thermal environment. Multiple modes of the nonlinear free vibration and supersonic panel flutter are considered in the closed loop simulations. Two different controllers are designed and investigated. The first one is the output feedback controller comprised of a Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) and an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). EKF considers the nonlinear state space matrix and has a gain sequence evaluated on-line. Thus the LQR/EKF nonlinear controller has more accurate state …
