Design Of A Square Loop Magnetic Integrating Device, Fred Leland Grismore Jr.
Design Of A Square Loop Magnetic Integrating Device, Fred Leland Grismore Jr.
Masters Theses
"The problem investigated in this research was the development of a static integrating circuit applicable to closed loop feedback control systems. Investigation of various methods of attack indicated that square loop magnetic cores offered characteristics required for the integration process. These include the ability to sum input information and the ability to store information for an indefinite period of time.
An experimental program was carried out, investigating the various properties of square loop magnetic materials and required design parameters. Through this work it was verified that the process of integration could be realized by using the partial switching volt-second absorption …
Scatter Matrix Analysis Of Plane Waves In A Layered Media, Bill W. Ashworth
Scatter Matrix Analysis Of Plane Waves In A Layered Media, Bill W. Ashworth
Masters Theses
"The problem was the application of matrix theory to the solution of the reflection and transmission coefficients for a plane wave incident on a layered media. Background material relating to the problem was reviewed. Equations that were used in the solution of the problem were either derived or explained. The derivations for the reflection and transmission coefficients were carried out in order, starting with the simple case of normal incidence on a junction of two infinite media and progressing through the more difficult case of oblique incidence on a layer of finite thickness separating two infinite media. Scatter matrix analysis …

A Study Of Viscous Frictional Effects And Relay Characteristics On The Operation Of A Positional Relay Servomechanism, Earl F. Richards
Masters Theses
"The thesis describes some experimentally observed data and analytical approaches to the study of a relay servomechanism. The experimental data were secured from an analog simulation of a relay servo system. The results of this data were compared to the transient approach by use of the phase-plane method. The stability of the system was determined using a describing-function. The analytical approaches are described in the presentation.
A study of the effects of viscous friction is described, and the characteristic of the relay used in the system is given special attention. The response to input driving function was considered, and rise …

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The purpose of this project was to develop airborne electronic equipment which would digitize the amplitude of random, fast, video pulses to an accuracy greater than one percent. For a detailed description of this task, refer to Appendix A, Research Contract Proposal 56-13AEE, “Development of an Anglo-To-Digital Converter.” This report covers the complete system design and the development of several basic circuits, in their practical form, which demonstrate system design feasibility.
Demodulation Of A Special Am-Fm Signal, Donald W. Dearholt
Demodulation Of A Special Am-Fm Signal, Donald W. Dearholt
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
As telemetry becomes more and more important in returning information, new types of modulation arise. Sometimes the modulation used is a direct result of a particular type of transducer, although the output of the transducer may be modified before the carrier is modulated to cause a very different type of signal than would otherwise have occurred.

A Study Of Minimum Element Syntheis Of A Two-Pole Rc Driving Point Impedance, William F. Carlson
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The point of view taken in this thesis is from the point of view of economy. A network containing resistors of values 1 ohm and 1 megohm may present problems of accuracy and element tolerance limits which are not aided by the fact that all elements may be increased or decreased by a constant multiplier without changing the shape of the network gain curve.
A Microwave Technique For Determining The Electronic Properties Of A Moving Plasma, Bernard Hayes
A Microwave Technique For Determining The Electronic Properties Of A Moving Plasma, Bernard Hayes
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
A microwave interferometer technique which may be used as a diagnostic tool for determining the electronic properties of a moving plasma is described and analyzed. The plasma and microwaves are confined in a wave guide and longitudinal observation is employed. The complex reflection coefficient determined from resultant standing-wave pattern provides the means for obtaining the complex dielectric constant, conductivity, electron concentration and collision frequency of electrons with molecules in the plasma. The plasma used for these experiments is the reaction products of a gas detonation.

Design And Use Of A High Power Laser For Plasma Generation Studies., Philip N. Mace
Design And Use Of A High Power Laser For Plasma Generation Studies., Philip N. Mace
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The advent of high power lasers to the technological scene has introduced the possibility of creating new effects utilizing the interaction of this high intensity light with matter. C. M. Fowler and D. B. Thomson of the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory suggested in 1963 the possibility of using a high power laser to pre-ionize and heat a target material to be contained in an explosively driven theta pinch machine. There had been calculations performed by John Dawson, Princeton University, and A. Engelhardt, Westinghouse Research Laboratories, which indicated that such an approach was theoretically feasible. The laser powers required, however, were …

Analysis And Synthesis Of A Current Regulator System, William P. Aiello
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
This report describes a practical current regulator system used to accurately control the current delivered by a 500 kilowatt motor-generator unit. The generator supplies its current of 2000 amperes at 250 volts to a large water-cooled air-core solenoid used by LASL Group P-7 for experiments in connection with the Sherwood program.
After a general discussion of the system specifications and the basic regulator loop, each of the components in the basic regulator loop is described in considerable detail. The description, in most cases, is mathematical in nature although many circuit diagrams are included with brief descriptions when necessary for proper …
An Experimental Investigation Of Receiver System Sensitivity, James Henry Johnson
An Experimental Investigation Of Receiver System Sensitivity, James Henry Johnson
Masters Theses
"A method of determining the minimum detectable power density incident at the receiving antenna of a UHF receiver is proposed. The minimum detectable power density is the power density required to produce a signal-to-noise ratio of unity in the output of the receiver. The proposed method includes the receiving antenna impedance, the necessary connecting transmission lines, and the receiver impedance.
It is shown that an error in the antenna directivity will produce a significant error in the overall sensitivity of a receiving system. Since the directivity is the most difficult system variable to determine experimentally, it is probably the limiting …
Design Of An Intermediate Frequency Amplifier And Variable Frequency Oscillator, Robert Charles Mcintyre
Design Of An Intermediate Frequency Amplifier And Variable Frequency Oscillator, Robert Charles Mcintyre
Masters Theses
"Since the advent of the transistor in 1948 many technological barriers have been overcome in the field of semiconductors. Unfortunately, however, there is a considerable period of time between the discovery of a scientific phenomena and its widespread use and understanding by practicing engineers. The motivating factor which prompted this investigation was primarily the lack of knowledge which the author possessed concerning transistors. The selection of the amplifier and oscillator design confined the study primarily to the transistor. Considerable time, however, had to be spent in the study of basic transistor theory before any phase of the design could be …
Automatic Tuning Of A.C. Compensating Networks, Giles C. Sinkewiz
Automatic Tuning Of A.C. Compensating Networks, Giles C. Sinkewiz
Masters Theses
"The purpose of this thesis is to illustrate the practicality of using an auxiliary servo system to shift parameters in damping networks of the main servo system.
Since amplification is most easily achieved with A.C. amplifiers and since A.C. servo motors are superior in operation to D.C. servo motors, because no brushes or commutators are needed, the A.C. servo system is widely used. However, one major problem is confronted when designing an A.C. servo system. This is the problem of designing damping circuits and compensating circuits which are insensitive to carrier frequency fluctuations. Notch filters provide the desired transfer functions, …

The Equalization And Optimization Of A Third-Order Type-1 Position Control System, Viswanatha Seshadri
The Equalization And Optimization Of A Third-Order Type-1 Position Control System, Viswanatha Seshadri
Masters Theses
"While the practice of feedback control dates back to the day when the earliest living organisms began to react to their environmental conditions and the changes therein, it has been only during the past two decades that this technique came to be subjected to a scientific examination. Yet, an astoundingly rapid advancement has resulted in the field of servo-mechanisms, contributing substantially to the development of modern civilized existence and activity to its present standards, and promising to contribute, to an ever-increasing extent, to the accelerated progress of scientific and industrial enterprise in this space age.
The principal concerns of the …
A Method For The Prediction Of Detection Ranges For Pulsed Doppler Radar, Phillip Orlan Brown
A Method For The Prediction Of Detection Ranges For Pulsed Doppler Radar, Phillip Orlan Brown
Masters Theses
"Modern radar systems must provide greater detection ranges both against high and low altitude targets because of the significant advances in weapon speed and range. Extended range indicates that the power transmitted by the radar must be increased. It follows, that ground return becomes a problem even at high altitudes.
There are at present three basic types of radars which are (1) pulsed, (2) continuous wave, and (3) pulsed doppler radar. The conventional pulsed radar now closely approaches the theoretical optimum performance; however, it does not have the inherent ability to distinguish between ground return and moving targets. The continuous …

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
This is a study of the behavior of a "Hall Effect" device by theoretical and experimental methods to determine if its operation may be predicated for various magnetic fields, output resistances, operating temperatures, input resistances, input control currents, and device construction.
This information should prove useful in the design of a circuit where the use of a "Hall Effect" device is contemplated.
A Reactor Transfer Function Analyzer, Earl O. Swickard Jr
A Reactor Transfer Function Analyzer, Earl O. Swickard Jr
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
This thesis describes the design of a device for determining the transfer function of a nuclear reactor. A number of different methods have been successfully employed for this purpose but were, in some cases, tedious or required the use of delicately balanced components. The equipment described computes values which are simply related to the values of the transfer function and is operable over a frequency range of about 1000:1. The time required to obtain data for one frequency point is two minutes or less. No precise adjustment is necessary during operation.

Transistor Distributed Amplifier, Bill J. Harper
Transistor Distributed Amplifier, Bill J. Harper
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
For the purpose of this report, it is assumed that the behavior of the transistor can be predicted from the study of a suitable circuit model or equivalent circuit of the transistor. It is further assumed that, except for the intrinsic short-circuit current gain, the circuit parameters of he transistor are independent of frequency and temperature. The primary interest in the study of transistor distributed amplifier here is the amplitude of the voltage gain in the amplification of video frequencies. Somewhat less detailed studies are made of the distributed amplifier in band-pass applications.
An Experimental Investigation Of A Small Volume Sandwich Antenna In The 400 Megacycle Frequency Range, James Gilbert Smith
An Experimental Investigation Of A Small Volume Sandwich Antenna In The 400 Megacycle Frequency Range, James Gilbert Smith

"The frequency response approach to the design of automatic controls is the dominant one today. This approach in a strict sense may be said to have started with a paper in 1932 by Dr. H. Nyquist, a physicist at the Bell Telephone Laboratories. In this paper Dr. Nyquist was concerned with the stability of feedback amplifiers. This work can be said to have made possible the transcontinental telephone as well as modern radio and television. Dr. Hendrick Bode, mathematician at the Bell Laboratory, extended the results of Dr. Nyquist and obtained some simple design criteria that enabled even technicians without …

Comparison Of Observed And Calculated Near-Vertical Radar Ground Return Intensities And Fading Spectra, James Arlin Cooper
Comparison Of Observed And Calculated Near-Vertical Radar Ground Return Intensities And Fading Spectra, James Arlin Cooper
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The study of ground-to-air terrain return is necessary in order to understand the functioning of radar altimeters.
Radar return at vertical incidence can be considered to be composed of two components. One, whic his returned by a mirror-like action, is called the specular component. The other, termed scatter, is due to diffuse rerediation from individual scatterers on the ground.
In recent work on return from angles near vertical, more attention has been given to the scatter component than many had previously assumed necessary.
Procedure for Gathering Data:
Two pulse radar units were used, one having a frequency of 3.8 KMC, …

A Study Of The Reset Cycle Of A Half-Wave Self-Saturable Magnetic Amplifier, William W. Lee
A Study Of The Reset Cycle Of A Half-Wave Self-Saturable Magnetic Amplifier, William W. Lee
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
It was the purpose of this study (1) to investigate the reset cycle of a half-wave self-saturable magnetic amplifier by graphical analysis of the irregular voltage functions appearing across the gate winding during reset; and (2) to determine if possible from this analysis a more satisfactory design method than those now available. Conditions of constant current reset were employed and the core material used had a nearly rectangular hysteresis loop. Resistive loads only are considered.
