A Study Of Gamma-Ray Photoconductivity In Organic Dielectric Materials, Stanley E. Harrison Mar 1962

A Study Of Gamma-Ray Photoconductivity In Organic Dielectric Materials, Stanley E. Harrison

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The gamma-ray photoconductivities of polyethylene, polystyrene, polyvinylchloride, polypropylene, Teflon, Nylon, Kel-F, and three thermosetting resins denoted as Epoxy 1478-1, 1478-3, and 1478-22 have been measured. The measurements were made at steady-state gamma-ray intensities ranging from 1.0rad(H2O)/min to 3.0 x 105 rads(H2o)/min and at controlled temperatures ranging from 90 degrees Fahrenheit to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Conductivity changes resulting from the steady-state gamma-ray exposures were measured continuously throughout the exposure and after the exposure. The exposure period was of sufficient duration to allow all samples to achieve an equilibrium conductivity value.

Control System Digital Computer Transfer Function Simulation, Jens J. Jonson Mar 1962

Control System Digital Computer Transfer Function Simulation, Jens J. Jonson

Faculty Publications

The z transform of simple delay, integrator, leadlag, and differentiator networks are suggested as the basic building blocks for simulating complex control systems on a digital computer. The system parameters retain their explicit identity, thus facilitating analysis and design of the system as a function of specific parameter changes.

A Qualitative Study On An Exploding Wire Fuse, W.D. Lacoss Jan 1962

A Qualitative Study On An Exploding Wire Fuse, W.D. Lacoss

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

This study was undertaken in an effort to develop basic concepts of normal operating fuse criteria that will apply to capacitor energy storage systems. To develop ideas germane to normal fuse operating limits, it was necessary to consider certain principles that preceded this development: (1) A review had to be made of some of the experimental work on the exploding wire phenomenon to indicate a possible application as a fuse; (2) A typical circuit requiring such a fuse had to be described schematically and analyzed to show the dependency between the circuit parameters and the necessary conditions for obtaining fusing …

Predicted Transient Response Of Complex Poles By Means Of A Residue Ratio, Rameshchandra Shankerbhai Patel Jan 1962

Predicted Transient Response Of Complex Poles By Means Of A Residue Ratio, Rameshchandra Shankerbhai Patel

Masters Theses

"Transient response plays an important role in servomechanism, electronic and electrical circuits. A time response of a linear system is the intuitive and immediately comprehensible description of the system performance. The utility of the system performance in television and high speed computer circuits can be determined by its transient characteristics. By locating certain points on the transient response curve the designer is enabled to predict the shape of the response with some precision. The choice of the overall transfer function (or location of the system singularities on the s-plane plot) is decided by speed, accuracy and stability of the response …

A Tunnel Diode Parametric Down Converter, Leland Lovell Long Jan 1962

A Tunnel Diode Parametric Down Converter, Leland Lovell Long

Masters Theses

"The problem, as presented, is to derive analytical expressions for the conversion gain, bandwidth, and noise figure of a self excited tunnel diode converter and to verify, if possible, the validity of these express- ions by building such a converter. These analytical results are presented and discussed. The converter circuit is shown along with the resulting intermediate frequency output. Gain and bandwidth measurements are also given. It is concluded that the self excited converter could very definitely be of value as a low noise pre-amplifying device in the ultra-high frequency and microwave frequency ranges"--Abstract, page ii.

A Study Of A Second-Order Predictive Control System, Tarkeshwar Singh Jan 1962

A Study Of A Second-Order Predictive Control System, Tarkeshwar Singh

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this thesis is the study of a predictive control system by simulating it on an analog computer. Logic criteria for step reference inputs are derived by the phase- plane technique, and tie corresponding logic network designed to bring the error and error rate of the controlled system toward zero in the least possible time.

The responses of the predictive control system for step, ramp, sinusoidal and exponential reference inputs are investigated with primary emphasis placed on the rise time and overshoot for several values of step inputs of the reference.

Finally, recommendations are made for further investigations …

Linear Feedback Control System Compensator Design Under Specified Constraints, Keikhosrow Irani Jan 1962

Linear Feedback Control System Compensator Design Under Specified Constraints, Keikhosrow Irani

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this thesis is to find the necessary and sufficient conditions for the design of compensators, following the concepts developed by Ross, Warren, Hsu and Sanden.

The main object that motivates this investigation is to design the lead or lag compensator networks for a given linear feedback system when there are these constraints.

  1. Gain of the system is constant.
  2. The steady-state error is invariant.
  3. The dominant poles of the closed-loop transfer function are specified.

Consideration of the problem is in two parts:

  • a. Derivation of necessary and sufficient conditions of compensator design that fulfill the three constraints.
  • b. …

A Comparison Of A-C And D-C Lead Compensation From D-C Prototype Networks, Piyush Parikh Jan 1962

A Comparison Of A-C And D-C Lead Compensation From D-C Prototype Networks, Piyush Parikh

Masters Theses

"The object of this thesis is to study the difference in transient and frequency response characteristics between a prototype d-c phase lead compensating network and an equivalent a-c phase lead compensating network.

A second order servo is selected to be compensated and five d-c prototype and equivalent a-c phase lead compensating networks are designed. The frequency characteristics of the a-c networks are obtained experimentally and these of the d-c networks are obtained analytically. The characteristics of both networks are compared and their differences are studied. The transient characteristics of the d-c and a-c compensated closed-loop systems to a step input …

An Acoustic Simulator For Modeling Backscatter Of Electromagnetic Waves, Allen R. Edison Sep 1961

An Acoustic Simulator For Modeling Backscatter Of Electromagnetic Waves, Allen R. Edison

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Model experiments are commonly employed in situations where a full-scale experiment is uneconomical and where exact theoretical analysis is very difficult. The physical problem is scaled to convenient laboratory dimensions and a means is provided for controlling and measuring the parameters of the experiment. Measurements made in the model system are required to provide information on the time and space variations of functions which describe the real system. When interpreting results it is frequently necessary to consider "scale effects" which arise from certain parameters exerting a different influence in the model than in the real system.

Propagation Between Conducting And Nonconducting Media, Richard H. Williams Sep 1961

Propagation Between Conducting And Nonconducting Media, Richard H. Williams

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

This paper contains a study of the electromagnetic fields caused by electric dipoles located within a highly conductive medium such as the sea. The theoretical treatment of this problem was begun in 1951 with Moore's thesis. "The Theory of Radio Communication between Submerged Submarines." Some subsequent major theoretical treatments of this problem have been published by Wait and Campbell, Lien, Banos and Wesley, and Anderson. All of the above work stems from Sommerfeld's classic paper published in 1909 where he considers the fields in the air caused by a vertical electric antenna located on the interface between the air and …

A Study Of A Nonlinear Compensation Network In A Feedback Control System, John F. Taylor Aug 1961

A Study Of A Nonlinear Compensation Network In A Feedback Control System, John F. Taylor

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

This paper is a study of the effect of a nonlinear compensation network on the closed-loop response of a feedback control system.

Physical energy dissipation elements, unlike their usual mathematical models, are often nonlinear. An example of such a nonlinear element is the mechanical damper. Since dissipation elements are used in most types of compensation, the problem of nonlinear compensation is an important one.

The study was performed with two goals in mind. The first was to determine the detrimental effects resulting from the insertion of the nonlinear network. The second was to see if any improvement in system performance …

The Effect Of Velocity On The Electrical Conductivity Of Blood, Judea Pearl Jun 1961

The Effect Of Velocity On The Electrical Conductivity Of Blood, Judea Pearl

Theses

Although the change in the conductance of blood resulting from changes in its velocity has been noted by several investigators working with electrical impedance techniques, this parameter of measurement has heretofore not been investigated from the viewpoint of practical application to blood flow measurement.

In certain regions of the body such as the tooth pulp and the cranial cavity, the volume of the contained blood cannot fluctuate during a cardiac cycle because of the rigid wall of the chamber. Therefore, impedance pulses which have been obtained in studies on the tooth pulp, must be attributed to the rhythmical fluctuation of …

Comparison Of Pulse And Fm Radar Altimeters Based On Terrain Return Theory, David L. Quinlan May 1961

Comparison Of Pulse And Fm Radar Altimeters Based On Terrain Return Theory, David L. Quinlan

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

In this paper a comparison of pulse of fm radar altimeters is made from the standpoint of the mathematical expressions describing each system’s return signal from terrain at near-vertical incidence. The pulse-fm radar relationships resulting from this comparison facilitates application of the extensive information gained in previous pulse radar studies to the investigation of fm radar terrain return and the associated design of fm radar altimeters, and may also assist in the development of the new pulse-type radars.

Induction Heater Temperature Controller, Raymond A. Gore May 1961

Induction Heater Temperature Controller, Raymond A. Gore

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The author was presented with a system to control the power output of a radio frequency oscillator used for induction heating. The original system was unstable. It was stabilized but even then its performance was not satisfactory. Thus the problem was to design a satisfactory system using some of the components of the old system.

A Method Of Measuring Temperature Changes Casued By Strong Shock Phenomena, Benjamin J. Goodier May 1961

A Method Of Measuring Temperature Changes Casued By Strong Shock Phenomena, Benjamin J. Goodier

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

This thesis is concerned with the development of a method to measure the temperature of a metal surface during a time interval of a few microseconds while it is being subjected to a strong shock. The temperature of a special interest is the temperature of the free surface which appears after a strong shock has been reflected from that surface. This temperature remains constant until another shock wave is reflected from the surface, except for the change caused by heat loss to the surroundings by radiation.

A Conversion Means Between The Crc-102a And Maniac I., Theodore E. Smart May 1961

A Conversion Means Between The Crc-102a And Maniac I., Theodore E. Smart

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The University of New Mexico has acquired two general purpose computers; a CRC-102A and MANIAC I. The MANIAC I has been installed and is nearing operational status, while the CRC-102A has been in use for some time. When both computers are operating it will be desirable, in certain, cases, to program a problem for both. A means for translating a program for one of the machines into a program for the other with a minimum of manual effort would, therefore, be useful. The purpose of this project was to translate the commands for one computer into commands for the other …

Theory And Fabrication Of Point Contact Diodes Utilizing Reduced Single Crystal Rutile Tio2, Goebel Davis Jr. May 1961

Theory And Fabrication Of Point Contact Diodes Utilizing Reduced Single Crystal Rutile Tio2, Goebel Davis Jr.

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Single Crystal Rutile TiO2 upon reduction by heating in an atmosphere of hydrogen becomes a semiconductor, and the conductivity increases with the time and temperature of reduction. The reduction process creates oxygen vacancies with which there are associated two loosely bound electrons. These electrons may be raised to the conduction band by thermal excitation. Hence, an oxygen vacancy behaves like an impurity donor site.

A Study Of Drift Mobility In Neutron Irradiated N-Type Germanium, William H. Closser Apr 1961

A Study Of Drift Mobility In Neutron Irradiated N-Type Germanium, William H. Closser

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

With the advent of the transistor in the late 1940's have come an entirely new field of engineering and a greatly renewed interest in solid state physics. This paper will be concerned in general with the electrical properties of these materials, and specifically drift mobility of the minority carriers in n-type germanium. The minority carrier in n-type material is the hole. The definition of drift mobility is: the mean carrier velocity per unit electric field.

The Fields Of Electric Dipoles In Sea Water- The Earth-Air-Ionosphere Problem, Wallace L. Anderson

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

In the initial part of the following investigation; expressions will be obtained for the Hertz potential in three regions of arbitrary conductive and dielectric properties. The regions are separated from each other by two infinite parallel planes. In directions normal to these planes, the regions above and below the intermediate layer are considered to be of semi-infinite extent. The regions are individually homogeneous. An electric dipole is located in one of the semi-infinite media, which will be called medium 1. The intermediate layer is called medium 2, and the other medium 3.

Acceleration Of A Symmetric Plasmoid In An Axial Magnetic Bias Field, Richard Daniel Jones Apr 1961

Acceleration Of A Symmetric Plasmoid In An Axial Magnetic Bias Field, Richard Daniel Jones

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

A pulsed gas, electrodeless discharge, plasma accelerator facility has been developed for experimental studies of the coupling mechanism for the transfer of energy from a driving magnetic field to a plasma. Gas at low pressure is ionized by an azimuthal electrical field induced through the action of a rapidly varying axial magnetic field produced by the flow of current through a ring surrounding a confining glass shock tube. The tube is arranged to permit radial expansion of the ionized gas. Due to its conductivity, the plasma, once it is formed, can exclude the rapidly varying driving magnetic field for a …

A Radar Refraction Correction For Symmetric And Nonsymmetric Tropospheric Index Distributions, Ralph J. Rainey Jr. Mar 1961

A Radar Refraction Correction For Symmetric And Nonsymmetric Tropospheric Index Distributions, Ralph J. Rainey Jr.

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The high precision radars now in use have demonstrated the need for more exact refraction correction than is afforded by any fixed "standard" refractive index profile. The precision capabilities are even substantial enough to cause concern over the possible effects of the non-symmetric index distribution which introduces azimuthal errors. However, the indications are that the present limitation on true range measurements are primarily due to limitations on the radar itself, and a "gross" average correction is adequate for many cases of interest.

A Development Of An Equivalent Circuit Of A Hall Generator Which Utilizes A Flux Concentrator, Laurence L. Rosier Feb 1961

A Development Of An Equivalent Circuit Of A Hall Generator Which Utilizes A Flux Concentrator, Laurence L. Rosier

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The development of the transistor has brought about a great deal of research in the field of semiconductors. One of the results in this research is the development of the Hall effect. A number of new devices which utilize the Hall effect have been proposed; however, more theoretical and experimental work is required to determine which of these devices are practical. The success of the equivalent circuit approach in the other fields of electrical engineering suggests that an equivalent circuit which would represent Hall effect devices would be useful. The development of such an equivalent circuit should be centered about …
