An Investigation Of Methods For Analyzing Networks Containing One Nonlinear Element, Dustin J. Wilson Jun 1963

An Investigation Of Methods For Analyzing Networks Containing One Nonlinear Element, Dustin J. Wilson

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The inclusion of a single nonlinear element in a general N-loop network greatly complicates the resulting equations and prohibits a straightforward solution. The object of this investigation is to provide a method for solving such networks. In particular, a reduction of the network coefficient matrix will be considered in order to obtain one nonlinear equation and (N-1) linear equations. It will be shown that the form of the nonlinear equations is always the same, and a procedure for approximating the solution of equations of this type will be given.

Transistorized Circuits For Telemetry, Dominick Misciascio Jr. Jun 1963

Transistorized Circuits For Telemetry, Dominick Misciascio Jr.

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

This thesis is concerned with the telemetry of small DC signals from photomultiplier tubes. The circuitry must have a high input impedance so as not to load down the photomultiplier tube and a low output impedance which is capable of controlling the current through a small incandescent bulb. This bulb is used to illuminate a photoresistor. The output of the circuit consists of a variation of the resistance of the photoresistor. This variable resistance is conventionally converted into a variable audio frequency which is transmitted to the receiving station on a radio-frequency carrier. The output resistance must be independent of …

A Unique Analog-To-Digital Voltage Conversion Network, Thomas O. Summers May 1963

A Unique Analog-To-Digital Voltage Conversion Network, Thomas O. Summers

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The increasing utilization of digital data acquisition systems has resulted in the design and development of a large number of different analog-to-digital voltage converters. Each of these designs exhibits varying specifications with regard to accuracy, speed, environmental tolerance, reliability, and cost.

These specifications are usually interrelated and the nature of the interrelations are, in turn, related to the design approach.

As an example of these interrelations, one could consider the specifications of a converter designed around an electro-optical approach requiring a cathode ray tube with coding mask. In this approach, the analog input voltage causes the deflection of a swept …

Measurement Of Thin Film Thickness By The Crystal Resonance Method, David G. Adams May 1963

Measurement Of Thin Film Thickness By The Crystal Resonance Method, David G. Adams

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Recent years have seen a tremendous increase in thin film activity. The electronics industry, in particular, has become increasingly active in the development and production of thin film components and complete micro-electronic circuits laid down as thin films. The principal methods of producing thin films are by chemical and electrolytic processes, and by evaporation and sputtering in vacuum. One of the problems associated with film deposition in vacuum involves the measurement of film thickness, a difficult task because: 1) the thicknesses encountered are typically measured in hundreds of angstroms; 2) the films are not physically flat; and 3) they do …

In addition to performing a mathematical analysis of the problem, the author who asked to design and build equipment which would present a visual demonstration of the reflection activities. The necessary definition of radar properties and a description of the test equipment …

Compensator Design For Unity Feedback Systems On The Digital Computer., Ping Liang Jan 1963

Compensator Design For Unity Feedback Systems On The Digital Computer., Ping Liang

Masters Theses

"In control systems engineering it is frequently necessary to compensate a fixed plant whose transfer function cannot be changed. Usually the characteristics of the resulting system are established in terms of steady state and transient performance specifications. Generally it is necessary to insert a compensator which permits the system to satisfy the specifications as well as to provide an absolutely stable system.

In this thesis a method is developed to determine the transfer function of the compensator. Each system performance specification can be expressed in a differentiable inequality form composed of the system closed-loop gain, zeros, and poles. First, the …

Small Signal Gain Analysis For A Seven Cavity Klystron Amplifier., William E. Hord

Masters Theses

"The problem was to find a suitable method of using the digital computer to calculate the small signal gain characteristics of a seven cavity klystron amplifier. Background material relevant to the problem was reviewed. The differential equations for small signal conditions in a gridless gap klystron were developed. These equations were then solved and put in a matrix form suitable for digital computer analysis. Suggestions for additional development were proposed"--Abstract p. ii

Pattern Calculations On A Loaded Spiral Antenna., Jose Briceno

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this thesis is to calculate and p lot the radiation patterns o f a ferrotron-loaded spiral antenna made of semicircles. In particular, this work is confined to a balanced spiral free to radiate in all directions.

The current distribution used in the evaluation of the vector potential is taken from a synthesized current obtained from experimental information on a ferrotron-loaded spiral antenna at a frequency of operation of 200 MC.

The calculated patterns of the spiral antenna are in general single lobed in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the antenna. The beamwidth varies from 62° …

Linear System Transfer Function Identification, Tuh-Kai Koo Jan 1963

Linear System Transfer Function Identification, Tuh-Kai Koo

Masters Theses

“An approach using a high speed special purpose digital computer to identify the transfer function of a linear system is presented in this thesis. The data for computation are obtained by measuring the system response and its derivatives periodically with a periodic test signal (impulse) input.

The order of the system is first determined by evaluating the rank of a Hankel matrix. Then, the transfer function is determined by solving two sets of system equations.

Theoretical analysis is emphasized in the study. Two examples are given for the purpose of illustrating the theory

The Justification For And Design Of A Lunar Radio Observatory., Thomas Van Doren Jan 1963

The Justification For And Design Of A Lunar Radio Observatory., Thomas Van Doren

Masters Theses

"The purpose of a radio telescope is to record information concerning the strength, spectrum, polarization, and direction of arrival of extraterrestrial electromagnetic radiation at radio frequencies. Earthly based radio observatories are hampered in their attempt to achieve this purpose by atmospheric absorption and reflection of the radiation. A lunar based system would not have this problem because the Moon possesses practically no atmosphere. However, other environmental conditions, such as micrometeorites, high frequency radiation, and extreme temperature variations, must be overcome. This thesis justifies the need for a lunar radio observatory and also describes a particular radio telescope system which should …

Digital Computer Design Of Compensation For Linear Control Systems, Larry C. Amsler Jan 1963

Digital Computer Design Of Compensation For Linear Control Systems, Larry C. Amsler

Masters Theses

"If a control system is to be synthesized, it is inferred that a plant or process is present which must be controlled, and the problem of how to design the control system then arises. The first step is to decide on performance specifications to which the complete system must conform. These specifications may involve such things as the system steady state response, transient response, or frequency response. Any of several synthesis methods may then be applied to complete the system design.

In this study a synthesis method is developed for single-loop linear feedback systems. First, the number of compensating poles …

A Graphical Solution Method For The Tchebychev Elliptic Function Filter, Gene S. Luckfield Jan 1963

A Graphical Solution Method For The Tchebychev Elliptic Function Filter, Gene S. Luckfield

Masters Theses

"This thesis is concerned with the design of the Tchebychev elliptic function filter. The Darlington synthesis procedure is discussed and salient points from Darlington's paper needed for the design of this filter are presented.

It is shown that the design of the Tchebychev elliptic function filter requires a knowledge of the elliptic functions, particularly the elliptic sine. Since the use of these functions is not common, a brief review of their properties is presented.

Using the elliptic functions, a development of the equations describing the behavior of the Tchebychev elliptic function filter is given for the case of a normalized …

Infrared Modulation Using The Field-Effect Properties Of Germanium., Lloyd E. Brunkhorst Jan 1963

Infrared Modulation Using The Field-Effect Properties Of Germanium., Lloyd E. Brunkhorst

Masters Theses

"The absorption of infrared radiation, by free carriers in germanium, has been used to amplitude modulate infrared radiation. In the experiment, a space charge layer consisting of free carriers is established at the inner surface of a germanium sample by using the field-effect technique. Infrared radiation of a wavelength to which the germanium is transparent is then Internally reflected from this surface. The infrared radiation passes twice through the space charge layer for each internal reflection. With each pass through the space charge layer, the amplitude of the transmitted infrared is decreased. Amplitude modulation of the transmitted infrared is accomplished …

Missouri School Of Mines Antenna Range Design., Russell Melvin Ousley Jan 1963

Missouri School Of Mines Antenna Range Design., Russell Melvin Ousley

Masters Theses

"The problem was to design, construct and evaluate an antenna range which could be used in future research and instructional programs. The basic theory of range design and practical considerations were studied and a range was then designed and built from equipment which was either immediately applicable, applicable after modification or constructed to fit the needs of the range. Tests were made to determine the performance characteristics of the system with respect to the more important design parameters. Suggestions were given for future improvement of operation and expansion of the range capabilities"--Abstract p. ii

Determining Design Freedom Of Linear Feedback Control Systems, Harley D. Brixey Jan 1963

Determining Design Freedom Of Linear Feedback Control Systems, Harley D. Brixey

Masters Theses

“The problem confronted in this thesis is to develop a method or procedure to be used in determining the amount of design freedom that is available in any given linear feedback control system by working with the signal flow-graph representation of the system.

Literature was reviewed that deals with basic signal flow-graph theory and degrees of design freedom. Signal- flow-graph theory that forms a foundation for the development is presented.

The development consists of starting with an essential signal-flow graph of order one. The sensitivity and transmittance functions are written for this essential graph in terms of graph symbols; then …

Determining Stability Of Nonlinear Control Systems Via Lyapunov's Method., John Joseph Komo Jan 1963

Determining Stability Of Nonlinear Control Systems Via Lyapunov's Method., John Joseph Komo

Masters Theses

"The problem undertaken in this thesis is to present Lyapunov's method of stability as i t applies to control systems and to use it in the stability analysis of nonlinear control systems. The variable gradient method of generating Lyapunov functions is presented since this seems the best general procedure for obtaining Lyapunov functions. Also, the integration of matrices method is presented as a comparison. ii

Procedures for the use of the variable gradient method and the integration of matrices method are written and several examples are used to illustrate these procedures.

It is concluded that Lyapunov's method is very definitely …

A Time Optimum Bang Bang Control System Under Specified Inputs., John F. Curtin Jan 1963

A Time Optimum Bang Bang Control System Under Specified Inputs., John F. Curtin

Masters Theses

"The problem presented is a study, by simulation on an analog computer, of a time optimum "bang bang" control system with a second order plant. Phase plane analysis techniques are used to describe the performance of the second order plant under the action of a maximum effort controller. From this, the system logic is developed for time optimum response to a step reference input. A fast time model of the plant is used to obtain repeated high-speed extrapolations of the plant outputs, at the same time a linear predictor generates future values of the reference. The error functions thus found …

A Rc Active Delay Time Network., Robert Sun-Wu Han Jan 1963

A Rc Active Delay Time Network., Robert Sun-Wu Han

Masters Theses

"This thesis presents a method for performing an approximate synthesis of a variable delay time network by using RC elements and active analog computer circuits. The delay networks discussed here can provide delay times which range from zero to 96 milliseconds for inputs with frequencies which range between zero 2nd 5 cycles per second.

Basically, the procedure involves approximating the delay time transfer function, e-jwTd , by the ratio of two polynomials each of which is represented by a finite series of terms. The ratio is then shown to be easily synthesized by RC elements and analog computer circuits. …

The Monopole Antenna With A Small Number Of Radials, S. H. Durrani Oct 1962

The Monopole Antenna With A Small Number Of Radials, S. H. Durrani

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

This paper reports a study of an antenna system consisting of a vertical monopole and a small number of insulated horizontal radials lying lightly on the ground.

The monopole antenna has long been popular for medium frequency broadcasting because of its inherent simplicity and economy. Although quarter-wavelength resonant structures were used in the early days, it was shown by Ballantine (1924) that for a given power, the strongest field strength at the radio horizon was produced by an antenna about 0.6 wavelength long. This ignored the sky wave and was based on the assumption of a perfectly conducting (and reflecting) …

Hypersonic Plasma Thermionic Generator, Andre R. Leblanc Sep 1962

Hypersonic Plasma Thermionic Generator, Andre R. Leblanc

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The Langmuir two-probe system is extended to cover the case of electron emission from one of the probes. The contact potential difference between the two probes is also included as part of the equations. One of the probes, known as the emitter, operates at sufficiently high temperatures such that electron emission occurs, while the other probe, known as the collector, operates at low enough temperatures such that its electron emission can be neglected.

Electromagnetic Radiation In Magneto-Ionic Media For Vlf And Vhf Spectra, Kenneth R. Cook Jul 1962

Electromagnetic Radiation In Magneto-Ionic Media For Vlf And Vhf Spectra, Kenneth R. Cook

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The interaction of electromagnetic fields and magneto-ionic media has received considerable attention in the last few years. In rather general terms, the investigation of these phenomena can be categorized into two basic classes. In one class of investigation the primary interest is the dynamic nature of the plasma when subjected to specialized forms of electromagnetic fields. This branch of science has various nomenclatures such as hydromagnetics, magnetohydrodynamics, plasma physics and numerous others implying the use of high density ionized gases interacting with electromagnetic fields. Controlled fusion processes for transforming energy states is an example of this branch of electromagnetics and …
