Work in progress at the University of Missouri-Rolla on hardware assists for high performance computing is presented. This research consists of a novel field programmable gate array (FPGA) based reconfigurable coprocessor board (the Chameleon Coprocessor) being used to evaluate hardware architectures for speedup of array computation algorithms. These algorithms are developed using a Mathematics of Arrays (MOA). They provide a means to generate addresses for data transfers that require less data movement than more traditional algorithms. In this manner, the address generation algorithms are acting as an intelligent data prefetching mechanism or special purpose cache controller. Software implementations have been …

Conventional Least Squares Order-Recursive Lattice (LSORL) Filters Use Present and Past Data Values to Estimate the Present Value of a Signal. This Paper Introduces LSORL Smoothers Which Use Past, Present and Future Data for that Purpose. Except for an overall Delay Needed for Physical Realization, LSORL Smoothers Can Substantially Outperform LSORL Filters While Retaining All the Advantages of an Order-Recursive Structure. © 1995 IEEE
On The Carrier Mobility In Forward-Biased Semiconductor Barriers, Mark S. Lundstrom, Shin'ichi Tanaka
On The Carrier Mobility In Forward-Biased Semiconductor Barriers, Mark S. Lundstrom, Shin'ichi Tanaka
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
A simple one-speed solution to the Boltzmann equation is used to evaluate the mobility and diffusion coefficient for carriers in forward-biased semiconductor barriers. The analysis shows that although the average kinetic energy of carriers remains near thermal equilibrium, the mobility and diffusion coefficient are strongly reduced by the built-in field. Conventional macroscopic transport equations, which treat the carrier mobility and diffusion coefficient as single valued functions of the kinetic energy will improperly treat transport in forward-biased barriers. The results are important for the careful analysis of metal–semiconductor and heterojunction diodes.

Ex situ nonalloyed ohmic contacts were made to n- and p‐type GaAs using low‐temperature molecular beam epitaxy. For n‐type GaAs, Ag, and Ti/Au nonalloyed contacts displayed specific contact resistitivities of mid 10-7 ohm cm2. For p‐type GaAs, nonalloyed Ti/Au contacts with specific contact resistivities of about 10-7 ohm cm2 were obtained.
Transition Matrix Approach For Monte Carlo Simulation Of Coupled Electron/Phonon/Photon Dynamics, Muhammad A. Alam, Mark S. Lundstrom
Transition Matrix Approach For Monte Carlo Simulation Of Coupled Electron/Phonon/Photon Dynamics, Muhammad A. Alam, Mark S. Lundstrom
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
A new approach for simulating the dynamics of electrons, phonons, and photons is described. The technique provides a Monte Carlo simulation of particle dynamics without the statistical noise associated with direct Monte Carlo simulation, treats physical phenomena with a wide range of time scales, and has a good computational efficiency. A transition matrix is first precomputed by direct Monte Carlo simulation. Particle populations are then updated at regular time steps by simple matrix multiplication while correcting for nonlinear effects such as carrier–carrier scattering, band filling, hot phonons, etc. The technique is well suited to studies of quantum well laser devices …
Temperature Dependence Of Minority And Majority Carrier Mobilities In Degenerately Doped Gaas, Michael L. Lovejoy, Michael R. Melloch, Mark S. Lundstrom
Temperature Dependence Of Minority And Majority Carrier Mobilities In Degenerately Doped Gaas, Michael L. Lovejoy, Michael R. Melloch, Mark S. Lundstrom
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Measured minority and majority carrier mobility temperature dependencies in heavily doped n- and p-GaAs are compared. Majority carrier mobilities in heavily doped GaAs are essentially temperature ~T! independent while minority carrier mobilities exhibit a roughly 1/T dependence. Majority carrier freezeout, which reduces both majority–minority carrier and ionized impurity scattering, is shown not to be responsible for the 1/T minority carrier mobility dependence. The difference in minority and majority carrier mobility T dependencies is explained in terms of the increased degree of degeneracy of majority carriers with decreased temperature, which decreases majority–minority carrier scattering.

Gallium arsenide light emitting diodes (LEDs) were fabricated using molecular beam epitaxial films on GaAs substrates and removed by epitaxial lift-off (ELO). Lifted off devices were then mounted on a Si wafer using a Pd/Au/Cr contact layer, which also served as a back surface reflector. Devices were characterized by electrical and optical measurements, and the results for devices on the GaAs substrate were compared to those for EL0 devices. EL0 LEDs coated with a ZnS/MgF2 antireflection coating exhibited an optical output that was up to six times that of LEDs on GaAs substrates. At the same time, the measured current-voltage …

Applying Neural Networks To Find The Minimum-Cost Coverage Of A Boolean Function, Pong P. Chu
Applying Neural Networks To Find The Minimum-Cost Coverage Of A Boolean Function, Pong P. Chu
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
To find a minimal expression of a boolean function includes a step to select the minimum cost cover from a set of implicants. Since the selection process is an NP-complete problem, to find an optimal solution is impractical for large input data size. Neural network approach is used to solve this problem. We first formalize the problem, and then define an ''energy function'' and map it to a modified Hopfield network, which will automatically search for the minima. Simulation of simple examples shows the proposed neural network can obtain good solutions most of the time.
A General Approach To Boolean Function Decomposition And Its Application In Fpgabased Synthesis, Tadeusz Luba, Henry Selvaraj
A General Approach To Boolean Function Decomposition And Its Application In Fpgabased Synthesis, Tadeusz Luba, Henry Selvaraj
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research
An effective logic synthesis procedure based on parallel and serial decomposition of a Boolean function is presented in this paper. The decomposition, carried out as the very first step of the .synthesis process, is based on an original representation of the function by a set of r-partitions over the set of minterms. Two different decomposition strategies, namely serial and parallel, are exploited by striking a balance between the two ideas. The presented procedure can be applied to completely or incompletely specified, single- or multiple-output functions and is suitable for different types of FPGAs including XILINX, ACTEL and ALGOTRONIX devices. The …

Beam Modes Of Lasers With Misaligned Complex Optical Elements, Anthony A. Tovar
Beam Modes Of Lasers With Misaligned Complex Optical Elements, Anthony A. Tovar
Dissertations and Theses
A recurring theme in my research is that mathematical matrix methods may be used in a wide variety of physics and engineering applications. Transfer matrix techniques are conceptually and mathematically simple, and they encourage a systems approach. Once one is familiar with one transfer matrix method, it is straightforward to learn another, even if it is from a completely different branch of science. Thus it is useful to overview these methods, and this has been done here. Of special interest are the applications of these methods to laser optics, and matrix theorems concerning multipass optical systems and periodic optical systems …

We describe in detail the partial pixel architecture that permits the realization of three-dimensional (3-D) displays that are functionally equivalent to a real-time holographic stereogram. This architecture permits the simultaneous presentation of multiple stereoscopic images so that motion parallax is discernible in the resultant 3-D scene. The key innovation of the architecture is that each pixel is subdivided into partial pixels, which in turn can be implemented as individual diffraction gratings. We describe a static display that exhibits a 3-D image with one-dimensional motion parallax, thereby demonstrating key features of the architecture. A variety of partial pixel implementations are discussed …

We report on the intensity dependent supralinear photoconductivity in GaAs:Si:Cu material. The results of our measurements show that the effective carrier lifetime can change over two orders of magnitude with variations in the intensity of the optical excitation. A threshold intensity level has been observed and can be related to the occupancy of the deep copper level. Numerical simulations have also been carried out to analyze the trapping dynamics. The intensity dependent lifetimes obtained from the simulations match the experimental data very well. Finally, based on the nonlinear intensity dependence of the effective lifetimes, a possible low‐energy phototransistor application for …

A Silicon Knife Design And Fabrication, Mingli Wang
Theses
In this thesis, the design and fabrication of a silicon knife is described. The device design is based on the principle of oxidation sharpening.
The knife is made from a silicon wafer and can be made to be any chosen length up to 150 mm. It was made with the same basic procedures used in semiconductor chip manufacturing. This type of processing/manufacturing results in a knife with a high degree of sharpness and smoothness compared with existing knife technology.
The knife fabrication plan combines IC processing, techniques including anisotropic and isotropic etching of silicon, plasma dry etching and chemical etching …

Model For Complete Drawdown Of Floating Solids In Stirred Tank Reactors, J Mmbaga
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
A Semi-empirical model has been developed on the basis of Kolmogoroff's theory of isotropic turbulence to determine the minimum drawdown speed for floating solids in a mechanically agitated vessel. An adjustable pa- rameter in the model is found to be afunction of impeller type and position in a vessel. A simplified representation of macroscopicflow pattern, rep- resenting the circulation flow in a vessel depending on impeller pumping characteristic is developed to account for recirculation pattern.

Evaluation Of The Influence Of The Magnetic System In Relays, D Chambega
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
The paper evaluates the influence of different cores on the performance of relays. In particular two types ofc-cores, all made from IOW quality mag- netic steel, are considered. The two cores, one butt-constructed and the other interleaved, are mathematically modelled and the tesults are analyzed and obtained experimentally. Then the two sets of results are compared with those ofa c-shaped core of excellent magnetic material with the aim of qualifying the influence of the core material. It is observed that the method of constructing the core also influences the performance.

Application Of Improved Pressure Transducers For Pressure Measurements, P Mtui
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
Substantial improvement of low sensitivity pressure transducers aiming at obtaining a more realistic output signal is discussed. The output signal direct from these transducers has deficiencies of amplitude attenuation and phase lag, thus the measured values are not necessarily the true in- stantaneous values. In order to correct for such shortcomings the unit step response of these transducers is also studied experimentally. A math- ematical model is established based on the experimental results to build up a compensation circuit which is then included in the instrumentation setup to eliminate these deficiencies. The effectiveness of the compensated transducer is demonstrated by …

To sense characteristics of a sample, an ellipsometer includes a pivotal diffraction grating positioned to receive white light from the analyzer without further focusing of the light after the light leaves the sample. The diffraction grating is focused on the sensor at a predetermined angle with a precision of at least plus or minus one-half degree using an alignment-sensing means positioned between the analyzer and diffraction grating. The sensor includes an aperture through which the incident beam of light is transmitted, light-sensitive areas on opposite sides of said sensor and a comparator for comparing the signal from said light-sensitive areas. …
On Modeling Of A Mobile Multipath Fading Channel, Heng Xiao
On Modeling Of A Mobile Multipath Fading Channel, Heng Xiao
Dissertations and Theses
Multipath fading is one of the major practical concerns in wireless communications. A multipath transmission takes place when a transmitted signal arrives at a receiver by two or more paths of different delay. Such multiple paths may be due to atmospheric reflection or refraction, or reflections from buildings or other objects. A multipath fading channel is usually modeled as a time-variant tapped delay system. RAKE receiver can be used to detect the signal from the multipath fading channel. However, the number of delay taps, the time delay of each path, and the tap weight for each delay path need to …

Methodology For Accurate Speedup Prediction, Aruna Chittor
Dissertations and Theses
The effective use of computational resources requires a good understanding of parallel architectures and algorithms. The effect of the parallel architecture and also the parallel application on the performance of the parallel systems becomes more complex with increasing numbers of processors. We will address this issue in this thesis, and develop a methodology to predict the overall execution time of a parallel application as a function of the system and problem size by combining simple analysis with a few experimental results. We show that runtimes and speedup can be predicted more accurately by analyzing the functional forms of the sequential …

The performance of Z-cut Mach-Zehnder high speed LiNbO3 amplitude modulators with a CPW traveling wave electrode, has been analyzed and optimally designed in detail by the Fourier series method. The effect of electrode and buffer layer thickness on the electric field distribution in the substract, effective micro- wave refractive index and characteristic impedance of CPW electrode, are discussed. Calculation shows that increasing the thickness of the electrode and SiO2 buffer layer can improve the phase velocity mismatch between electric and optical waves, and the drive power required by the modulator with thin buffer layer and thick electrode is …
Multispectral Detection Of Ground Targets In Highly Correlated Backgrounds, Jason E. Thomas
Multispectral Detection Of Ground Targets In Highly Correlated Backgrounds, Jason E. Thomas
Theses and Dissertations
Multispectral detection methods attempt to discriminate targets in a dominant clutter background using multiple images of the same real-world scene taken in different narrow spectral bands in the infrared. Detection is possible due to the empirically observed phenomenon that the radiance of man-made objects, such as a tank or truck, often lies off the main spectral correlation axis of that of natural backgrounds. Radiometric measurements of several vehicles and a tree canopy background taken over three days in June. 1994 were used to examine the factors affecting multispectral detection. Results clearly showed that the processes which provide for higher spectral …
Instability In Self-Pulsation In Laser Diodes And Its Effect On All-Optical Synchonization, Jonathan Hyland, Gerald Farrell
Instability In Self-Pulsation In Laser Diodes And Its Effect On All-Optical Synchonization, Jonathan Hyland, Gerald Farrell
Articles
The effect of short- and long-term frequency instability in self pulsation on all-optical synchronization using a twin-section laser diode is experimentally investigated. Short-term frequency instability broadens the unlocked full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the fundamental of the rf spectrum of the self-pulsating laser diode. We show experimentally that the value of the unlocked FWHM, and thus the level of short-term instability, has a direct effect on the optical power required to maintain synchronization. A novel means of reducing the FWHM is presented based on a reflective transmission line stub connected to the absorber of the twin-section self-pulsating laser …

A Contactless Method For Measuring The Bulk Resistance Of Ii-Vi Compound Semiconductors, Edward D. Wheeler, Jack L. Boone, James L. Drewniak
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A radio frequency measurement technique for measuring the bulk resistivity of II-VI compound semiconductors is described. Wafers of n-type CdS are used to demonstrate the technique. An equivalent circuit model is introduced which predicts a frequency dependence for the CdS wafer impedance which agrees well with the experiment. The model assumes a broad distribution of relaxation times associated with the polarization. The radio frequency method gives values for the resistivity within 15% of four point probe measurements for the lower resistivity wafers, and within 5% for the higher resistivity wafers.

Multipoint Multirate Signal Processing, Roger L. Claypoole Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis provides a fundamentally new, systematic study of multipoint multirate signal processing systems. The multipoint multirate operators are analyzed via equivalent circuits comprised entirely of conventional multirate operators. Interconnections of the operators are demonstrated, and the multipoint noble identities are derived. The multipoint polyphase representation is presented, and the M channel multipoint multirate system with vector length N is presented as an MN channel multipoint polyphase system. The conditions sufficient for perfect reconstruction in the multipoint multirate system are derived. These conditions constrain the multipoint filter banks to be composed of comb filters generated from paraunitary sets of conventional …
