A Bipartite, Differential I Ddq Testable Static Ram Design, Waleed K. Al-Assadi, A. P. Jayasumana, Y. K. Malaiya

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

I DDQ (Defect Detection by Quiescent power supply current measurement), or current testing, has emerged in the last few years as an effective technique for detecting certain classes of faults in high-density ICs. In this paper, a testable design that enhances the I DDQ testability of static random access memories (SRAMs) for off-line testing as proposed. To achieve high accuracy and a test speed approaching the system operational speed, the memory is partitioned for comparison of I DDQ values. Parallel write/read operations are used to activate possible faults, while quiescent power supply currents from two blocks are compared

This research has shown that features extracted from color skin tumor images by computer vision methods can be reliable discriminators of malignant tumors from benign ones. Reliability was demonstrated by the monotonically increasing success ratios with increasing training set size and by the small standard deviations from the mean success rates. An average success rate of 70 percent in diagnosing melanoma was attained for a training set size of 60 percent. The presence or absence of atypical moles in the training and test sets was shown to have a dramatic impact on the effectiveness of the generated classification rules. This …

Nonlinear Robust Control Of A Series Dc Motor Utilizing The Recursive Design Approach, Michael J. Burridge Jan 1995

Nonlinear Robust Control Of A Series Dc Motor Utilizing The Recursive Design Approach, Michael J. Burridge

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, the investigation of asymptotic stability of the series DC motor with unknown load-torque and unknown armature inductance is considered. The control technique of recursive, or backstepping, design is employed. Three cases are considered. In the first case, the system is assumed to be perfectly known. In the second case, the load torque is assumed to be unknown and a proportional-integral controller is developed to compensate for this unknown quantity. In the final case, it is assumed that two system parameters, load torque and armature inductance, are not known exactly, but vary from expected nominal values within a …

Analysis Of A Current-Regulated Brushless Dc Drive, Keith Corzine, S. D. Sudhoff, H. J. Hegner

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Current-regulated brushless DC machines are used in a wide variety of applications including robotics, actuators, electric vehicles, and ship propulsion systems. When conducting system analysis of this or any other type of drive, average-value reduced-order models are invaluable since they provide a means of rapidly predicting the electromechanical dynamics and are readily linearized for control system synthesis. In this paper, a highly accurate average-value reduced-order model of a hysteresis current-regulated brushless DC drive is set forth. In so doing it is demonstrated that the drive exhibits five distinct operating modes. The physical cause of each of these modes is explained …

Remote Detection Of Acoustic Boundaries Using Radiation Imaging Operators, Richard E. Dubroff, Md. Ishfaqur Raza, Thomas J. Herrick

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we present an acoustic imaging operator. This operator is based upon combining the material boundary conditions at an acoustic boundary and the radiation boundary conditions associated with one way wave propagation. Numerical examples, using the second-order imaging operator, are presented in order to demonstrate the applicability of this method to the detection of two-dimensional boundaries.

The Fast Affine Projection Algorithm, Steven L. Grant, S. Tavathia Jan 1995

The Fast Affine Projection Algorithm, Steven L. Grant, S. Tavathia

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper discusses a new adaptive filtering algorithm called fast affine projections (FAP). FAP''s key features include LMS like complexity and memory requirements (low), and RLS like convergence (fast) for the important case where the excitation signal is speech. Another of FAP''s important features is that it causes no delay in the input or output signals. In addition, the algorithm is easily regularized resulting in robust performance even for highly colored excitation signals. The combination of these features make FAP an excellent candidate for the adaptive filter in the acoustic echo cancellation problem. A simple, low complexity numerical stabilization method …

The Performance Of Reed-Solomon Codes On A Bursty-Noise Channel, William J. Ebel, William H. Tranter Jan 1995

The Performance Of Reed-Solomon Codes On A Bursty-Noise Channel, William J. Ebel, William H. Tranter

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The performance of a Reed-Solomon coded binary communication system on a bursty-noise channel is considered. Bursty noise is defined to be background Gaussian noise plus burst noise, where burst noise is defined to be a series of finite-duration Gaussian-noise pulses with fixed duration and Poisson occurrence times. Using the noise model, along with ideal symbol interleaving, decoded bit-error probability bounds are derived for the case where the noise bursts are long with respect to the channel symbol rate. Specific performance results are presented for the (31,15,8) Reed-Solomon Joint Tactical Distribution System (JTIDS) code with a Binary Phase Shift Keyed (BPSK) …

The Influence Of Pcl 3 On Planarisation And Selectivity Of Inp Regrowth By Atmospheric Pressure Movpe, M. J. Harlow, P. C. Spurdens, Randy Hays Moss

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The introduction of phosphorus trichloride into the AP-MOVPE growth of InP has been found to dramatically improve the regrowth adjacent to mesa structures. By suppressing growth in the [100] direction and enhancing growth in the [311] directions planar regrowth is achieved. Polycrystalline deposits on dielectric masks can also be completely suppressed

A Flux-Weakening Strategy For Current-Regulated Surface-Mounted Permanent-Magnet Machine Drives, Keith Corzine, S. D. Sudhoff, H. J. Hegner Jan 1995

A Flux-Weakening Strategy For Current-Regulated Surface-Mounted Permanent-Magnet Machine Drives, Keith Corzine, S. D. Sudhoff, H. J. Hegner

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Permanent-magnet synchronous machines fed from current-regulated converters feature nearly ideal performance at low-to-moderate speeds. However, as rotor speed increases the back emf rises which results in loss of current regulation and decreased torque. In buried-magnet machine drives, flux weakening is often used to extend the speed range. This paper sets forth a flux-weakening control specifically designed for surface-mounted permanent-magnet machines which is simple and does not require knowledge of the machine or system parameters. The proposed method is demonstrated both experimentally and through the use of computer simulation

On-Line Cursive Korean Character Recognition By Using Curvature Models, Chang-Soo Kim, Byung Hwan Jun, Moo Young Kim, Woo Seong Kim, Jaihie Kim Jan 1995

On-Line Cursive Korean Character Recognition By Using Curvature Models, Chang-Soo Kim, Byung Hwan Jun, Moo Young Kim, Woo Seong Kim, Jaihie Kim

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A cursive Korean character consists of several Korean alphabets where connection is present within and among the alphabets. Recognition of Korean characters can be carried out by splitting each character into smaller primitives. Small line segments can be used as the primitives. But this approach requires too much processing time, for there can be many candidate references to be matched to one input character and each reference usually consists of too many primitives. In this paper, we propose an approach using structural curvature models to overcome the difficulties of using small line segments. These models are obtained by segmenting the …

Hardware For Fast Global Operations On Distributed Memory Multicomputers And Multiprocessors, Douglas V. Hall Jan 1995

Hardware For Fast Global Operations On Distributed Memory Multicomputers And Multiprocessors, Douglas V. Hall

Dissertations and Theses

"Grand Challenge" problems such as climate modeling to predict droughts and human genome mapping to predict and possibly cure diseases such as cancer require massive computing power. Three kinds of computer systems currently used in attempts to solve these problems are "Big Iron" multicomputers such as the Intel Paragon, workstation cluster multicomputers, and distributed shared memory multiprocessors such as the Cray T3D. Machines such as these are inefficient in executing some or all of a set of global program operations which are important in many of the "Grand Challenge" programs. These operations include synchronization, reduction, MAX, MIN, one-to-all broadcasting, all-to-all …

An Analysis Of The Use Of Programmable Controllers To Control An In Situ Leach Mine Wellfield, Jimmy W. Stokey Jan 1995

An Analysis Of The Use Of Programmable Controllers To Control An In Situ Leach Mine Wellfield, Jimmy W. Stokey

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In situ mining is a relatively new method that has the potential of recovering a variety of minerals. This process is quickly becoming an alternative to conventional mining techniques that are environmentally unsound. Two problems associated with in situ mining are, the amount of waste water generated by the process (bleed) and the uncontrolled migration of lixiviant outside the production zone (an excursion).

The purpose of this study was to determine if in situ mining processes could be monitored and controlled with a Sequential Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. Using programmable logic controllers, a cost-effective SCADA system was designed …

Time-Frequency Shift-Tolerance And Counterpropagation Network With Applications To Phoneme Recognition, Li-Minn Ang Jan 1995

Time-Frequency Shift-Tolerance And Counterpropagation Network With Applications To Phoneme Recognition, Li-Minn Ang

Theses : Honours

Human speech signals are inherently multi-component non-stationary signals. Recognition schemes for classification of non-stationary signals generally require some kind of temporal alignment to be performed. Examples of techniques used for temporal alignment include hidden Markov models and dynamic time warping. Attempts to incorporate temporal alignment into artificial neural networks have resulted in the construction of time-delay neural networks. The nonstationary nature of speech requires a signal representation that is dependent on time. Time-frequency signal analysis is an extension of conventional time-domain and frequency-domain analysis methods. Researchers have reported on the effectiveness of time-frequency representations to reveal the time-varying nature of …

Compensation And Characterization Of Gallium Arsenide, Randy A. Roush Jan 1995

Compensation And Characterization Of Gallium Arsenide, Randy A. Roush

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The properties of transition metals in gallium arsenide have been previously investigated extensively with respect to activation energies, but little effort has been made to correlate processing parameters with electronic characteristics. Diffusion of copper in gallium arsenide is of technological importance due to the development of GaAs:Cu bistable photoconductive devices. Several techniques are demonstrated in this work to develop and characterize compensated gallium arsenide wafers. The material is created by the thermal diffusion of copper into silicon-doped GaAs. Transition metals generally form deep and shallow acceptors in GaAs, and therefore compensation is possible by material processing such that the shallow …

Scanning-Tunneling-Microscopy Study Of Pb On Si(111), D. Tang, H. E. Elsayed-Ali, J. Wendelken, J. Xu Jan 1995

Scanning-Tunneling-Microscopy Study Of Pb On Si(111), D. Tang, H. E. Elsayed-Ali, J. Wendelken, J. Xu

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Scanning-tunneling microscopy has been used to study temperature and coverage dependence of the structure of lead on the Si(111)-7×7 surface. For low Pb coverage, the Pb atoms favored the faulted sites. The ratio between the number of Pb atoms on faulted to unfaulted sites increased after sample annealing. An energy difference of 0.05 eV associated with a Pb atom on these two sites is estimated. The mobility of Pb atoms on Si(111) was observed at a temperature as low as 260°C for a coverage of 0.1 and 1 ML. © 1995 The American Physical Society.

A Diamond Thin Film Flow Sensor, Sacharia Albin, John C. Hagwood, John B. Cooper, David L. Gray, Scott D. Martinson, Michael A. Scott Jan 1995

A Diamond Thin Film Flow Sensor, Sacharia Albin, John C. Hagwood, John B. Cooper, David L. Gray, Scott D. Martinson, Michael A. Scott

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We present the results of theoretical modeling and experimental testing of a diamond thin film sensor for flow studies. It is shown that the high thermal conductivity of a diamond film can enhance the frequency response of the flow sensor. One-dimensional heat diffusion equation was solved using the finite difference method for determining the frequency response. Two different sensor structures were analyzed: a Ni film on a quartz substrate (Ni/Q) and an intermediate layer of diamond film between the Ni film and quartz substrate (Ni/D/Q). The theoretical model predicts a frequency response for the Ni/D/Q sensor higher than that of …

This research developed a comprehensive description of the simulation environment of Architect, a domain-oriented application composition system being developed at the Air Force Institute of Technology to explore new software engineering technologies. The description combines information from several previous research efforts and Architect's source code into a single, comprehensive document. A critical evaluation of the simulation environment was also performed, identifying improvements and modifications that enhance Architecture's application execution capabilities by reducing complexity and execution time. The analysis was then taken one step further and presented extensions to the current simulation environment. The extensions included investigating the feasibility of mixed-mode …

Effects Of Large Aspect Ratios And Fluctuations On Hard X-Ray-Detection In Lower Hybrid Driven Divertor Tokamaks, Linda L. Vahala, George Vahala, Paul Bonoli Jan 1995

Effects Of Large Aspect Ratios And Fluctuations On Hard X-Ray-Detection In Lower Hybrid Driven Divertor Tokamaks, Linda L. Vahala, George Vahala, Paul Bonoli

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

It is shown that lower hybrid wave scattering from fluctuations plays a critical role in large aspect ratio divertor plasmas even through the edge density fluctuation levels are only at 1%. This is seen in the theoretically calculated electron power-density profiles which can be directly correlated to the standard experimental chordal hard x-ray profiles. It thus seems that fluctuation effects must be included in determining rf current-density profiles.

Diagnostics Of Cdte Electrodeposition By Rest Potential Voltammetry, Brandon Kemp, Robert Engelken, Arif Raza, Arees Siddiqui, Omer Mustafa Jan 1995

Diagnostics Of Cdte Electrodeposition By Rest Potential Voltammetry, Brandon Kemp, Robert Engelken, Arif Raza, Arees Siddiqui, Omer Mustafa

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Due to the extreme sensitivity of the partial elemental currents (i.e.,iCd, iTe) and, hence, stoichiometry to deposition voltage, temperature, mass transport, and ambient light intensity during electrodeposition of semiconductor films, it is important to implement in-situ methods for monitoring the stoichiometry and related semiconductor efficacy of the growing film. We report investigation of open circuit rest potential (Eoc) voltammetry as one such method during electrodeposition of CdTe from aprotic electrolytes such as ethylene glycol. Plots of transient open circuit potential versus sweep voltage exhibit distinct transition and plateau structures corresponding to Te, CdTe, and Cd phases and correlating with the …

Em Interaction Of Handset Antennas And A Human In Personal Communications, Michael A. Jensen, Yahya Rahmat-Samii

Faculty Publications

In personal communications, the electromagnetic interaction between handset-mounted antennas and the nearby biological tissue is a key consideration. This paper presents a thorough investigation of this antenna-tissue interaction using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) electromagnetic simulation approach with detailed models of real-life antennas on a transceiver handset. The monopole, side-mounted planar inverted F, top-mounted bent inverted F, and back-mounted planar inverted F antennas are selected as representative examples of external and internal configurations. Detailed models of the human head and hand are implemented to investigate the effects of the tissue location and physical model on the antenna performance. Experimental results are …

Video Coding For Bit Rates 64kbps And Below, Geoffrey N. Alagoda Jan 1995

Video Coding For Bit Rates 64kbps And Below, Geoffrey N. Alagoda

Theses : Honours

With digital motion video for either transmission or storage, there always exists a trade-off between the data transmission rate and the picture quality. The lower the transmission bit-rate is made, the more the quality of the image tends to degrade. With usual transform coding schemes the degradation usually occurs when low bit-rates, that is less than about 64Kbps, are used. The resultant image tends to suffer visually from a ''blocking" effect. This thesis therefore, is based on the development of a different implementation scheme, for motion video compression or encoding, so as to support both low bit-rates, around 64Kbps or …

The method involves combining an analytical approach with a least squares approach using a gradient algorithm, to provide accurate and robust estimates of the parameters.

Calculating Cross Slot Flux Losses In High Voltage Stator Coils, John D. Amos Jan 1995

Calculating Cross Slot Flux Losses In High Voltage Stator Coils, John D. Amos

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

At present there are several methods for calculating temperature for inner-cooled stator coils for large electric generators. Determining the highest temperature in a stator coil is very important and is a major limiting factor for the maximum capability of steam turbine synchronous generators.

The load current in the stator winding causes losses in the conductor resistance. That same current excites leakage fluxes that link contours inside the conductors causing non-uniform current distribution and additional losses. these additional losses are caused by eddy currents induced inside the stator coils. These eddy losses are grouped as radial flux losses, cross slot flux …

Gaussian Beam Resonator Formalism Using The Yy Method, Kenneth A. Menard Jan 1995

Gaussian Beam Resonator Formalism Using The Yy Method, Kenneth A. Menard

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A simple and powerful new paraxial ray formalism is shown to provide an alternate method for designing Gaussian Beam Resonators. The theory utilizes the Delano yybar diagram approach and is an extension of the recent work by Shack and Kessler for laser systems. The method is shown to be complementary to the conventional ABCD method and is founded upon J.A. Arnaud's pioneering ideas for complex rays. The thesis develops an analytic formulation of a ray based complex wavefront curvature and yields a clearly generalized description of spherical wave propagation, for which Gaussian beams are considered a special case. The resultant …

Conservative Thirty Calendar Day Stock Prediction Using A Probabilistic Neural Network, H. Tan, Donald C. Wunsch, Danil V. Prokhorov Jan 1995

Conservative Thirty Calendar Day Stock Prediction Using A Probabilistic Neural Network, H. Tan, Donald C. Wunsch, Danil V. Prokhorov

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We describe a system that predicts significant short-term price movement in a single stock utilizing conservative strategies. We use preprocessing techniques, then train a probabilistic neural network to predict only price gains large enough to create a significant profit opportunity. Our primary objective is to limit false predictions (known in the pattern recognition literature as false alarms). False alarms are more significant than missed opportunities, because false alarms acted upon lead to losses. We can achieve false alarm rates as low as 5.7% with the correct system design and parameterization.
