Bit Allocation Considering Mean Absolute Error For Image Compression, Hemen Goswami, Samuel Peter Kozaitis Jun 2000

Bit Allocation Considering Mean Absolute Error For Image Compression, Hemen Goswami, Samuel Peter Kozaitis

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

In lossy image compression schemes, often some distortion measure is minimized to arrive at a desired target bit rate. The distortion measure that has been most studied is the mean-squared-error (MSE). However, perceptual quality often does not agree with the notion of minimization of mean square error1 . Since MSE can not guarantee the optimality of perceptual quality, others error measures have been investigated. Others have found strong mathematical and practical perspective to choose a different error measure other than MSE, especially for image compression2. In Ref. 2 it is argued that the mean absolute error (MAE) measure is a …

We report on AlGaN/GaN heterostructures and heterostructurefield-effect transistors(HFETs) fabricated on high-pressure-grown bulk GaN substrates. The 2delectron gas channel exhibits excellent electronic properties with room-temperature electron Hall mobility as high as μ=1650 cm2/V s combined with a very large electron sheet density ns≈1.4×1013 cm−2.The HFET devices demonstrated better linearity of transconductance and low gate leakage, especially at elevated temperatures. We also present the comparative study of high-current AlGaN/GaN HFETs(nsμ>2×1016 V−1 s−1) grown on bulk GaN, sapphire, and SiC substrates under the same conditions. We demonstrate that in …

X-Ray Rocking Curve Analysis Of Tetragonally Distorted Ternary Semiconductors On Mismatched (001) Substrates, X. Zhang, David W. Parent, P. Li, A. Rodriguez, G. Zhao, J. Ayers, F. Jain Jun 2000

X-Ray Rocking Curve Analysis Of Tetragonally Distorted Ternary Semiconductors On Mismatched (001) Substrates, X. Zhang, David W. Parent, P. Li, A. Rodriguez, G. Zhao, J. Ayers, F. Jain

Faculty Publications

For ternary heteroepitaxial layers, the independent determination of the composition and state of strain requires x-ray rocking curve measurements for at least two different hkl reflections because the relaxed lattice constant is a function of the composition. The usual approach involves the use of one symmetric reflection and one asymmetric reflection. Two rocking curves are measured at opposing azimuths for each hkl reflection. Thus, it is possible to account for tilting of the hkl planes in the epitaxial layer with respect to the hkl planes in the substrate, by averaging the peak separations obtained at the opposing azimuths. This procedure …

Rate-Distortion Adaptive Vector Quantization For Wavelet Imagecoding, Qun Gu, Scott E. Budge Jun 2000

Rate-Distortion Adaptive Vector Quantization For Wavelet Imagecoding, Qun Gu, Scott E. Budge

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We propose a wavelet image coding scheme using rate-distortion adaptive tree-structured residual vector quantization. Wavelet transform coefficient coding is based on the pyramid hierarchy (zero-tree), but rather than determining the zero-tree relation from the coarsest subband to the finest by hard thresholding, the prediction in our scheme is achieved by rate-distortion optimization with adaptive vector quantization on the wavelet coefficients from the finest subband to the coarsest. The proposed method involves only integer operations and can be implemented with very low computational complexity. The preliminary experiments have shown some encouraging results: a PSNR of 30.93 dB is obtained at 0.174 …

Adaptive-Rate Tree-Structured Residual Vector Quantization, Christian B. Peel, X. Liu, Scott E. Budge Jun 2000

Adaptive-Rate Tree-Structured Residual Vector Quantization, Christian B. Peel, X. Liu, Scott E. Budge

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Full-search vector quantization (VQ) provides optimal results only with high memory and computational cost. We describe the computational and memory requirements of tree-structured VQ, residual VQ (RVQ), and tree-structured RVQ. We present multiple-rate, adaptive-search implementations of these VQ structures, and simulation results with video sequences. Tree-structured RVQ provides up to 1.5 db PSNR quality improvements over RVQ, as well as significant perceptual improvement. These algorithms maintain many of the benefits of full-search VQ, while providing trade-offs between computational, storage, and performance requirements.

Planar Approximation For The Least Reliable Bit Log-Likelihood Ratio Of 8-Psk Modulation, William H. Thesling, Fuqin Xiong, M. J. Vanderaar Jun 2000

Planar Approximation For The Least Reliable Bit Log-Likelihood Ratio Of 8-Psk Modulation, William H. Thesling, Fuqin Xiong, M. J. Vanderaar

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The optimum decoding of component codes in block coded modulation (BCM) schemes requires the use of the log-likelihood ratio (LLR) as the signal metric. An approximation to the LLR for the least reliable bit (LRB) in an 8-PSK modulation based on planar equations with fixed-point arithmetic is developed that is both accurate and easily realisable for practical BCM schemes. Through an error power analysis and an example simulation it is shown that the approximation results in less than 0.06 dB in degradation over the exact expression at an Es/N0 of 10 dB. It is also shown that …

Gaussian Beams In Hollow Metal Waveguides, Lee W. Casperson Jun 2000

Gaussian Beams In Hollow Metal Waveguides, Lee W. Casperson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Various families of Gaussian beams have been explored previously to represent the propagation of nearly plane electromagnetic waves in media having at most quadratic transverse variations of the index of refraction and the gain or loss in the vicinity of the beam. However, such beams cannot directly represent the wave solutions for propagation in planar or rectangular waveguides, and sinusoidal mode functions are more commonly used for such waveguides. On the other hand, it is also useful to consider the possibility of recurring Gaussian beams that have an approximately Gaussian transverse profile at certain distinct planes along the propagation path. …

A New Approach For Computing The Bandwidth Statistics Of Avalanche Photodiodes, Majeed M. Hayat, Guoquan Dong Jun 2000

A New Approach For Computing The Bandwidth Statistics Of Avalanche Photodiodes, Majeed M. Hayat, Guoquan Dong

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

A new approach for characterizing the avalanche-buildup-time-limited bandwidth of avalanche photodiodes (APDs) is introduced which relies on the direct knowledge of the statistics of the random response time. The random response time is the actual duration of the APD’s finite buildup-limited random impulse response function. A theory is developed characterizing the probability distribution function (PDF) of the random response time. Recurrence equations are derived and numerically solved to yield the PDF of the random response time. The PDF is then used to compute the mean and the standard deviation of the bandwidth. The dependence of the mean and the standard …

Video Traffic Modeling And Delivery, Hai Liu May 2000

Video Traffic Modeling And Delivery, Hai Liu

Dissertations

Video is becoming a major component of the network traffic, and thus there has been a great interest to model video traffic. It is known that video traffic possesses short range dependence (SRD) and long range dependence (LRD) properties, which can drastically affect network performance. By decomposing a video sequence into three parts, according to its motion activity, Markov-modulated self-similar process model is first proposed to capture autocorrelation function (ACF) characteristics of MPEG video traffic. Furthermore, generalized Beta distribution is proposed to model the probability density functions (PDFs) of MPEG video traffic.

It is observed that the ACF of MPEG …

Investigation Of The Baroreflex Of The Rat : Steady State And Dynamic Features, Xiaorui Tang May 2000

Investigation Of The Baroreflex Of The Rat : Steady State And Dynamic Features, Xiaorui Tang

Dissertations

The baroreflex is one of the most important feedback systems in the body to maintain blood pressure variation within the homeostatic range. In this dissertation, the important features of the carotid and aortic baroreflexes have been extensively investigated on ventilated, central nervous system intact, neuromuscular blocked (NMB) rats using different control system and signal processing tools. Studies have demonstrated that sinoaortic denervation (SAD) caused substantial increases in the blood pressure variability. Comparing the pre- and post-SAD blood pressure spectra, there was a significant increase of power in the very low frequency region (0.00195 -0.2 Hz), and a significant decrease of …

Design And Analysis Of A Scalable Terabit Multicast Packet Switch : Architecture And Scheduling Algorithms, Feihong Chen May 2000

Design And Analysis Of A Scalable Terabit Multicast Packet Switch : Architecture And Scheduling Algorithms, Feihong Chen

Dissertations

Internet growth and success not only open a primary route of information exchange for millions of people around the world, but also create unprecedented demand for core network capacity. Existing switches/routers, due to the bottleneck from either switch architecture or arbitration complexity, can reach a capacity on the order of gigabits per second, but few of them are scalable to large capacity of terabits per second.

In this dissertation, we propose three novel switch architectures with cooperated scheduling algorithms to design a terabit backbone switch/router which is able to deliver large capacity, multicasting, and high performance along with Quality of …

Bounded Beam Wave Pulse Propagation And Scattering In Random Media Based On The Radiative Transfer Theory Using 2-D Gauss Quadrature Formula, Sheng-Kai Hu May 2000

Bounded Beam Wave Pulse Propagation And Scattering In Random Media Based On The Radiative Transfer Theory Using 2-D Gauss Quadrature Formula, Sheng-Kai Hu

Theses

The scalar time-dependent equation of radiative transfer is used to develop a theory of bounded beam wave narrow band pulse propagation and scattering in a medium characterized by many random discrete scatters, which scatters energy strongly in the forward scattering direction. Applications include the scattering of highly collimated millimeter waves in vegetation and optical beams in the atmosphere. The specific problem analyzed is that of a periodic sequence of Gaussian shaped pulses normally incident from free space onto the planar boundary surface of a random medium half-space, such as a forest, that possesses a scatter (phase) function consisting of a …

A Method For Reducing The Variation In "On" Resistance Of A Mos Sampling Switch, A. K. Ong, Vladimir I. Prodanov, M. Tarsia May 2000

A Method For Reducing The Variation In "On" Resistance Of A Mos Sampling Switch, A. K. Ong, Vladimir I. Prodanov, M. Tarsia

Electrical Engineering

Variation in the “on” resistance of a MOS sampling switch can introduce distortion into the front end of a switched-capacitor filter or analog-to-digital converter. We review three methods commonly used to linearize the resistance of a MOS switch and propose a new technique that addresses their limitations. A practical method for implementation is also suggested.

V-I Converters With Transconductance Proportional To Bias Current In Any Technology, Vladimir I. Prodanov May 2000

V-I Converters With Transconductance Proportional To Bias Current In Any Technology, Vladimir I. Prodanov

Electrical Engineering

In this paper we discuss circuits comprised of multiple differential pairs driven in parallel. We show that high linearity and linear with bias current tunability are intrinsic properties of any equidistant-offset multi-pair circuit. We argue that these two properties could potentially allow us to implement designs of analog filters, multipliers and other circuits that are (in first-order) technology independent. Simulations results are provided in support of presented simple intuitive explanation.

Study On The Effect Of Sodium Ion On Cycle Performance Of Lithium/Improved Graphite Lithium Ion Cell, Wen-Huang Huang, Yu-Shun Yan, Chun-Rong Wan, Chang-Yin Jiang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The different concentration of Na+ was introduced into the non-aqueous eletrolyte system EC/DEC/LiClO 4 with 4A molecular sieve and lithiated 4A molecular sieve, by which the trace amount of water was removed. The concentrations of Na+ and Li+ were determined by atomic adsorption spectrometry. The cycle performance of lithium/improved graphite cells was then examined by charging and discharging under the constant electric current. The results demonstrated that the cycle performance of the cells was destroyed by the high concentration of Na+ under the small electric current. With the increase of electric current the cell became less …

Furthermore, the relationship between intrinsic properties of nanosized materials and their electrochemical behaviors are discussed. The prospect of nanosized materials for lithium ion …

Powder Microelectrode Modified With Nafion-Os(Bpy)3Â 2+ And Pvp Composite And Its Catalysis For No2- Reduction, Pei-Fang Liu, Jia-Wei Yan May 2000

Powder Microelectrode Modified With Nafion-Os(Bpy)3Â 2+ And Pvp Composite And Its Catalysis For No2- Reduction, Pei-Fang Liu, Jia-Wei Yan

Journal of Electrochemistry

The modified powder microelectrode was prepared by etching a Pt (0.1 mm diameter) disk microelectrode and filling in thus formed cavity with Nation-Os(bpy)32+/PVP composite modified carbon powder. The composite modified powder microelectrode showed cyclic voltammetric behaviors changing with the mole ratio (denoted X) of SO3- to Os(bpy)32+ in Nafion. When X=3, a single pair of current peaks appeared near 0.6V (vs. SCE) due to Os(bpy)32+/3+ redox couple. In contrast, for X=20, a pair of additional current peaks occurred near 0.4V. Both X=3 and X=20 modified powder microelectrodes strongly catalyzed the first …

Journal of Electrochemistry

A number of polymer materials as candidates of host matrix of plastic polymer electrolyte were examined and techniques for preparation of thin-film electrolyte were reported. The results showed that the polymer electrolyte prepared with P(VDF-HFP) copolymer as host matrix and DBP as plasticizer exhibit the satisfactory mechanical strength and ionic conductivity. In comprison with liquid electrolyte systems, thin-film lithium ion battery has almost similar charge-discharge capacity and cycleability. The manufacture methods and the technical factors in making plasticizing lithium ion battery were also described in details.

Study On Carbon From Pyrolyzing Phenol-Formaldehyde Resin For The Negative Electrode Of Li-Ion Secondary Battery, Zhi-Yuan Tang, Xin-Guo Zhuang, Yu-Mei Zhai, Jian-Gang Li, Jian-Jun Xue, Chun-Yan Liu

Journal of Electrochemistry

Li-ion secondary batteries negative electrodes were prepared by low temperature (<1 000 ℃) pyrolysis of commercial phenol-formaldhyde resin. A thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and an X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies were peoformed for the pyrolytic carbonaceous materials. The results indicated that these samples are amorphous polyacenic structure materials. With increasing pyrolytic temperature, these materials become structurally order, and the first charge-discharge special capacities reduce. The specific capacities base on pyrolytic temperature, involving lithium storage nanometer cavities.

Effects Of Temperature On The Proton Diffusion Of Doped Ni(Oh)2, Jian-Hua Liu, Jing-Wu Yang, Zhi-Yuan Tang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The Chronoamperometry of powder spherical Ni(OH)2 microelectrode was used to study the proton diffusion coefficients of Ni(OH)2. The proton diffusion coeefficients and the apparent diffusion active energy in anode and cathode processes at different temperature were obtained. Compared with pure Ni(OH)2, the apparent diffusion active energy (Ea) of Ni(OH)2 doped with Co and Co + Zn was decreased and the diffusion constant (Do) was increased in the anode and the cathode processes, respectively, the effect of Co was greater. In contrast, for Ni(OH)2 doped with Zn, its Ea …

Accumulation Hole Layer In P-Gan/Algan Heterostructures, M. S. Shur, A. D. Bykhovski, R. Gaska, J. W. Yang, Grigory Simin, M. A. Khan May 2000

Accumulation Hole Layer In P-Gan/Algan Heterostructures, M. S. Shur, A. D. Bykhovski, R. Gaska, J. W. Yang, Grigory Simin, M. A. Khan

Faculty Publications

We present the results on piezoelectric and pyroelectricdoping in AlGaN-on-GaN and GaN-on-AlGaN heterostructures and demonstrate p-GaN/AlGaN structures with accumulation hole layer. Our results indicate that polarization charge can induce up to 5×1013 cm−2 holes at the AlGaN/GaN heterointerfaces. We show that the transition from three-dimensional (3D) to two-dimensional (2D) hole gas can be only achieved for hole sheet densities on the order of 1013 cm−2 or higher. At lower densities, only 3D-hole accumulation layer may exist. These results suggest that a piezoelectrically induced 2D-hole gas can be used for the reduction of the base spreading resistance …

Emi Reduction From Airflow Aperture Arrays Using Dual-Perforated Screens And Loss, Min Li, Joe Nuebel, James L. Drewniak, Todd H. Hubing, Richard E. Dubroff, Thomas Van Doren

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Airflow perforations in shielding enclosures can act as apertures facilitating the coupling from internal sources to external electromagnetic interference (EMI). This EMI radiation for single- and dual-screen configurations was studied herein experimentally and with finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) modeling. A general EMI reduction of more than 20 dB was achieved for dual-perforated screens spaced 1 cm apart when compared to EMI for a single perforated screen. However, in the dual-screen case, the space between the screens can act as a thin cavity, which, in turn, can lead to significant radiation at distinct angles. Damping the resonances by loading the space between …

Fdtd Modeling Of Lumped Ferrites, Min Li, Xiao Luo, James L. Drewniak May 2000

Fdtd Modeling Of Lumped Ferrites, Min Li, Xiao Luo, James L. Drewniak

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Implementing ferrites in finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) modeling requires special care because of the complex nature of the ferrite impedance. Considerable computational resources and time are required to directly implement a ferrite in the FDTD method. Fitting the ferrite impedance to an exponential series with the generalized-pencil-of-function (GPOF) method and using recursive convolution is an approach that minimizes the additional computational burden. An FDTD algorithm for a lumped ferrite using GPOF and recursive convolution is presented herein. Two different ferrite impedances in a test enclosure were studied experimentally to demonstrate the FDTD modeling approach. The agreement is generally good.

Rotation-Invariant Synthetic Discriminant Function Filter For Pattern Recognition, Vahid R. Riasati, Partha P. Banerjee, Mustafa A. G. Abushagur, Kenneth B. Howell May 2000

Rotation-Invariant Synthetic Discriminant Function Filter For Pattern Recognition, Vahid R. Riasati, Partha P. Banerjee, Mustafa A. G. Abushagur, Kenneth B. Howell

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The ring synthetic discriminant function (RSDF) filter for rotation-invariant response is discussed for pattern recognition. This method uses one half of a slice of the Fourier transform of the object to generate the transfer function of the filter. This is accomplished by rotating the one half of a slice in the Fourier domain through 2π rad about the zero-frequency point of the Fourier plane. This filter has the advantage of always matching at least one half of a slice of the Fourier transform of any rotation of the image. An analytical discussion of the filter construction and correlation results are …

3d Outside Cell Interference Factor For An Air-Ground Cdma ‘Cellular’ System, David W. Matolak May 2000

3d Outside Cell Interference Factor For An Air-Ground Cdma ‘Cellular’ System, David W. Matolak

Faculty Publications

We compute the outside-cell interference factor of a code-division multiple-access (CDMA) system for a three-dimensional (3-D) air-to-ground (AG) "cellular-like" network consisting of a set of uniformly distributed ground base stations and airborne mobile users. The CDMA capacity is roughly inversely proportional to the outside-cell interference factor. It is shown that for the nearly free-space propagation environment of these systems, the outside-cell interference factor can be larger than that for terrestrial propagation models (as expected) and depends approximately logarithmically upon both the cell height and cell radius.

Circular Optimal Trade-Off And Distance-Classifier Correlation Filters, Samuel Peter Kozaitis, Sila Thangwaritorn May 2000

Circular Optimal Trade-Off And Distance-Classifier Correlation Filters, Samuel Peter Kozaitis, Sila Thangwaritorn

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

We use circular versions of advanced distortion-invariant filters such as optimal trade-off synthetic discriminant function and distance classifier correlation filters to obtain rotation invariance with an optical correlator. The filter noise performance is compared using a common measure of probability of error because the filters have different characteristics. The filters are real-valued so they can be implemented on a variety of SLMs. The circular symmetry of the filters significantly decreases their computational requirement.

Multilevel Coded Modulation For Unequal Error Protection And Multistage Decoding—Part Ii: Asymmetric Constellations, Motohiko Isaka, Marc P. C. Fossorier, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Shu Lin, Hideki Imai May 2000

Multilevel Coded Modulation For Unequal Error Protection And Multistage Decoding—Part Ii: Asymmetric Constellations, Motohiko Isaka, Marc P. C. Fossorier, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Shu Lin, Hideki Imai

Faculty Publications

In this paper, multilevel coded asymmetric modulation with multistage decoding and unequal error protection (UEP) is discussed. These results further emphasize the fact that unconventional signal set partitionings are more promising than traditional (Ungerboeck-type) partitionings, to achieve UEP capabilities with multilevel coding and multistage decoding. Three types of unconventional partitionings are analyzed for asymmetric 8-PSK and 16-QAM constellations over the additive white Gaussian noise channel to introduce design guidelines. Generalizations to other PSK and QAM type constellations follow the same lines. Upper bounds on the bit-error probability based on union bound arguments are first derived. In some cases, these bounds …
