Teaching Cuba In Georgia Today, Eric Kartchner
Teaching Cuba In Georgia Today, Eric Kartchner
The Coastal Review
This essay details a college professor's approach to teaching a course on Cuban history and culture. The professor's pedagogical choices were influenced by Ada Ferrer's book, Cuba: An American History, and José Antonio Bowen's work on fostering independent thinking. The syllabus covered pre-Columbian Cuba, Spanish rule, the wars of independence, the Castro era, and significant cultural aspects like music and religion. The course emphasized multiple perspectives and encouraged student-led research, challenging preconceived notions about Cuba's complex relationship with the United States. The professor aimed to promote critical thinking and understanding through student-driven inquiry.
Afghan Students Are More Than Just English Learners, Farilla Saboor
Afghan Students Are More Than Just English Learners, Farilla Saboor
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This thesis examines the strengths that Afghan students and their families bring to U.S. schools and how these strengths are often overlooked. Drawing on my experience as an Afghan immigrant, math teacher, and bilingual instructional aide, I explore how Afghan students, parents, and teachers describe these cultural, linguistic, and relational assets that shape students’ learning and sense of belonging. I use the Community Cultural Wealth (CCW) and Funds of Knowledge (FoK) as guiding frameworks to understand the aspirational, linguistic, familial, social, navigational, and resistant capital present in participants’ experiences (Moll et al., 1992; Yosso, 2005).
I conducted qualitative interviews with …

The Impact Of Bilingual Teacher License, And Years Of Experience On Bilingual Student Reading Achievement Across Multiple-Grade Levels, Cuauhtemoc D. Reyes
Theses and Dissertations
The body of literature had an ongoing debate of which certification or license type had a greater impact on student achievement. Nevertheless, there were insufficient studies that focused on the impact of certification type and years of experience in the Bilingual camp. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation was to explore the findings of the various impact Bilingual teacher license, years of experience, and both Bilingual license and years of experience had on Bilingual student reading achievement. Hence, the dissertation used a quantitative causal-comparative design and explored the research questions. The findings varied from grade levels, school years, and languages. …
Rising From The Ashes: Reading Impacts And The Effects Of Recovery Educational Services Following A Major Natural Disaster, Tiffanie Lousia Lambert
Rising From The Ashes: Reading Impacts And The Effects Of Recovery Educational Services Following A Major Natural Disaster, Tiffanie Lousia Lambert
Educational Leadership Professional Doctorate Dissertations
This Improvement Science Dissertation examined solutions to improving literacy outcomes for students in an elementary school that experienced a wildfire during the pandemic. School data revealed lagging reading growth among students displaced by the wildfire despite educational recovery efforts. A root cause analysis to understand students' limited reading recovery led to more global concerns about school-wide literacy programming and the limited use of evidence- based approaches. School-wide data revealed that fewer than 30% of students in the school met literacy benchmarks since the wildfire. Though the fires disproportionally impacted low-income neighborhoods with higher representation of English Learners and students receiving …
Reading Motivation And Achievement: Exploring Theories, Strategies, And School Climate Contexts, Andrea L. Esterly
Reading Motivation And Achievement: Exploring Theories, Strategies, And School Climate Contexts, Andrea L. Esterly
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This literature review examined the intersection of self-efficacy and motivation, and their impact on reading achievement. The analysis demonstrated how motivation and context support and shape students’ reading outcomes. This synthesis of peer-reviewed research (2014–2024) from ERIC, PsycINFO, and JSTOR highlights Self-Determination Theory (SDT) as a lens for understanding reading motivation through competence, autonomy, and relatedness. Evidence shows that fluency strategies (prosody, repeated reading, and arts integration) enhance pacing, comprehension, and engagement, while supportive school climates (characterized by safety, teaching, and relationships) further sustain motivation. The evidence underscores the importance of integrating motivational supports, fluency instruction, and student-centered practices to …

Sonic Photovoice And Critical Literacy: Listening To And Sounding What Is Me, What Is Not Me, And What Is Between, Alexander Chadwell
Theses and Dissertations--Curriculum and Instruction
This study examined sonic photovoice, a sound-based arts research method, as a tool for developing critical literacy in middle and high school students. Participants found and recorded sounds related to three categories, “what is me,” “what is not me,” and “what is between,” composed a sound collage using the sounds, and reflected on the experience. Framed by 4EA cognition, participatory sensemaking, and relational and everyday aesthetics, the study explored how listening and sounding shaped students’ conceptions of self and reality. Data from recordings, journals, and interviews suggest that the sonic engagement can foster relational, emergent understandings of self and …

The Influence Of Letrs Volume 1 On Elementary Teachers’ Perceptions And Practices Around Systematic Phonics Instruction In A Rural School In North Carolina, Katherine P. Wise
Doctor of Education Dissertations
This dissertation is a mixed methods study that examined the influence Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) Volume 1 had on elementary educators’ perceptions and practices around systematic phonics instruction in a rural, Title I elementary school in North Carolina. Adult learning theory was the theoretical framework used to ground this study. A sequential explanatory design was used: Quantitative data were collected through surveys, and qualitative data gathered through interviews were used to help frame and explain the quantitative data. Both data sources overwhelmingly supported that the completion of this professional learning positively influenced teachers’ perceptions of …
Nourishing Flourishing: Elevating Elementary Educator Jouissance, Julie T. Siemianowski
Nourishing Flourishing: Elevating Elementary Educator Jouissance, Julie T. Siemianowski
Dissertations of Practice
This study was conducted, predicated on the following theories: Nel Noddings’s ethics of care, Albert Bandura’s self-efficacy theory (social cognitive theory), and positive psychology’s Martin Seligman’s PERMA (well-being). For the purposes of this study, Seligman’s PERMA (positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, accomplishment) theory encompasses both Kerry Howells’ gratitude and David Chan’s gratitude and subjective well-being. Qualitative methodology, specifically, the combination of narrative inquiry and case study guided and informed my data collection. Through semi-structured interviews and story-telling, teachers and literacy leaders shared their stories of external distressers and internal factors contributing to their professional jouissance or lack thereof.

Bridging Language Barriers: How Secondary Teachers Support English Language Learners In The Classroom, Mason Daniel Smith
Bridging Language Barriers: How Secondary Teachers Support English Language Learners In The Classroom, Mason Daniel Smith
West Chester University Doctoral Projects
English Language Learners (ELLs) represent a growing student population in U.S. secondary schools, yet many educators feel underprepared to support their unique needs effectively. This mixed-methods study examines how Pennsylvania high school teachers approach the teaching of ELLs, focusing on their self-efficacy, instructional decision-making, and strategies for fostering an inclusive classroom community. Using an exploratory sequential mixed methods design, data was collected through surveys from a limited group of 40 high school educators followed by in-depth interviews with three participants. Findings revealed that while teachers express a strong desire to support ELLs, they often experience uncertainty and frustration due to …

Toward A Welcoming Classroom: Assessment Of Student Perceptions Of Writing Education In Introductory Honors College Courses, Hilary K. Snow
Honors in Practice Online Archive
This study examines student perceptions of an introductory-level writing program in honors at a large, public R1 university. Author considers the efficacy of pedagogical interventions aimed at identifying gaps in the experience of writing for students from BIPOC and first-generation backgrounds and at developing more inclusive teaching practices. Collective revisions to the program’s writing philosophy, objectives, and rubrics helped instructors gain clarity and consistency across sections. A two-part survey was conducted at the beginning and end of the semester, and metrics were calculated for all respondents (N = 176) and targeted subgroups (n = 37; n = 30). …

The Relationship Of Preschool Variables To Kindergarten Early Literacy Skills, Michele Davis Thomason
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the impact of Pre-K experiences on kindergarten early literacy skills in Alabama. A convergent parallel mixed-methods research design was utilized to analyze assessment data from My Teaching Strategies AlaKiDS and Renaissance STAR Early Literacy for kindergarten students in a rural Alabama district. The students were divided into three groups for comparison: students who attended Alabama First Class Pre-K, those in private programs using the Abeka curriculum, and students with no formal Pre-K experience. The dissertation utilized Vygotsky’s constructivist theory to assess the influence of early educational environments on the cognitive development through scaffolding and the Zone of …
Looking Beyond The Achievement Gap: An Inquiry Into Bridging The Divide Between Teacher Preparedness And English Learners’ Literacy Success, Sean Rhoads
Theses and Dissertations
English Learners (ELs) in early childhood and elementary settings continue to face a significant literacy achievement gap compared to their non-EL peers. A qualitative action research study was conducted in a suburban Midwest district to examine how teacher preparedness, instructional practices, and professional development influence EL literacy development. Through teacher interviews, surveys, and classroom observations, the study identified key challenges, including limited EL-specific training, minimal collaboration with EL specialists, and inadequate instructional resources. Aimsweb Plus data confirmed a widening literacy gap, reinforcing the need for culturally responsive teaching, improved collaboration, and targeted interventions. The findings emphasize the importance of sustained …
The Effects Of Singing In Music Therapy Sessions On Vocabulary Acquisition With Children With Asd, Yeim Kim
The Effects Of Singing In Music Therapy Sessions On Vocabulary Acquisition With Children With Asd, Yeim Kim
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often struggle with language acquisition and maintaining engagement during learning activities. While music therapy has shown promise in supporting communication and behavior in children with ASD, few studies have focused on its effect on vocabulary acquisition, particularly in comparing different types of music interventions like singing and non-singing approaches.
Purpose: This study aimed to explore how singing, as a method used in music therapy, affects vocabulary acquisition in a child with ASD. Three research questions guided this study: (1) How do singing and non-singing programs influence receptive vocabulary acquisition in a child with …
Holding Space For Two Truths: Thematic Analysis Of Speech Language Pathologists’ And Teachers’ Philosophies And Practices In Reading Comprehension, Ryan Foote
Theses and Dissertations--Communication Sciences and Disorders
Introduction: Reading is a doorway to life participation. Only about one-third of fourth graders have read at grade level for the last three decades. Multiple views on what constitutes skilled reading emphasize decoding and greater variability among comprehension-related skills. Scarborough’s Reading Rope is the most specific in defining discrete skills necessary for adequate reading comprehension. This study aims to understand how elementary-level general education teachers and speech-language pathologists define “reading comprehension” and describe their practices in assessing and developing these skills. Methodology: Elementary school speech-language pathologists and teachers were interviewed about their conceptualizations and applications of the discrete skills in …
Technology-Enhanced Professional Development For Early Literacy: A Comparative Study Of Online Teacher Learning Models In Kenya, Constanza Uribe-Banda
Technology-Enhanced Professional Development For Early Literacy: A Comparative Study Of Online Teacher Learning Models In Kenya, Constanza Uribe-Banda
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Growing recognition of early literacy as essential for lifelong learning, along with evidence that teachers’ mastery of foundational literacy instruction influences student outcomes (Darling-Hammond et al., 2017; UNESCO, 2020), has led to increased investment in teacher professional development. Despite these efforts, many educators face significant challenges in accessing high-quality training, particularly in resource-constrained settings where geographical barriers and limited institutional support persist. This is especially true in rural Kenyan communities, where teachers often work in under-resourced schools with unreliable electricity and internet connectivity yet bear responsibility for laying critical literacy foundations. The present study examines the potential to deliver effective …

This study rigorously evaluates machine learning models for classifying culturally significant Javanese Wuku texts from the “Keagamaan atau Spiritual” category, a domain challenged by unique linguistic nuances and limited digitized resources. We compared Support Vector Machine (SVM), Naïve Bayes, and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) on texts from five pivotal Wuku types (Sinta, Galungan, Kuningan, Sungsang, Warigalit) sourced from sastra.org, aiming to identify the most effective computational approach. The dataset comprises N = 1419 documents (T = 751.290 tokens), with per-class document counts reported for all five Wuku types. Our evaluation uses accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and …

In today's increasingly interconnected world, fostering cross-cultural understanding from an early age is more crucial than ever. Early childhood educators have a unique opportunity to lay the foundation for a more harmonious future by introducing young learners to diverse languages and cultures. The language learning circles (LLCs) approach is one way to create a nurturing space where young learners in a preschool setting explore new language and culture through songs, games, and movement, as highlighted in our recent article in ILA’s The Reading Teacher (see the sidebar). These interactive and inclusive activities spark curiosity and help children acquire language skills …

This qualitative case study explores how two English language teachers from South Korea and Taiwan developed transcultural dispositions as they participated in a virtual professional development program. The study employed third space as a conceptual framework and the third generation of cultural-historical activity theory (CHAT-3rd) as an analytical framework to uncover the teachers' learning experiences. Findings from this study reveal the dynamic and complex process of becoming a trans-educator through transforming one's professional identity and teaching practices. This study contributes to inclusive and responsive educational practices that reflect the complexities of globalized teaching and learning environments.

Although professional learning is the main approach for improving teacher knowledge, little evidence exists for its effectiveness in changing practice and improving student outcomes. One possible explanation is poor alignment between professional learning and classroom practice. In this paper, we describe a system-wide approach to changing teacher knowledge and reading pedagogy. Classroom teachers (n = 199) across 43 schools engaged in professional learning on contemporary science of learning and training in the use of published systematic and explicit reading instruction programs. Following the intervention, students’ word reading data revealed that the percentage of students requiring support post intervention had significantly …

This article examines the impact of self-study apps on out-of-class English learning among first-year non-major university students in EFL contexts in Thailand and Vietnam. Grounded in Radical Constructivism, the study highlights how these tools foster learner autonomy through goal setting, progress monitoring, and independent study behaviors. Over 16 weeks, 200 participants used the apps, with 78% Vietnamese and 71% Thai learners reporting consistent engagement. Quantitative findings revealed their effectiveness in promoting self-regulated learning, while qualitative data emphasized flexibility, personalization, and motivation through gamification and real-time feedback. However, challenges such as limited cultural localization, inadequate interaction opportunities, and technological barriers, particularly …

Digital tools are an integral part of most writing communities across the globe, enhancing the criticality of gaining a comprehensive understanding of both paper and computer-based writing acquisition and development. The relationships between transcription skills and children’s paper-based writing performance are well documented. Less is known about the relationships between transcription skills and children’s computer-based writing performance. In this study, we examined the unique contributions of transcription skills (i.e., handwriting automaticity, keyboarding automaticity and spelling) in predicting Grade 2 students (N = 544) paper-based and computer-based writing performance (i.e., compositional quality and productivity) after controlling for other student-level factors (i.e., …
