Stem Education Discrepancy In The United States And Singapore, Elizabeth K. Worsham, Aaron Clevenger, Kelly A. Whealan-George

Beyond: Undergraduate Research Journal

One of the hottest topics over the past several years has been science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. The United States is lagging behind in the STEM education rankings as compared to its counterparts in Europe and Asia, including Singapore, ranked second overall in math and science based on the Program of International Student Assessment. Even as such a small country, Singapore has one of the best education systems in the world, one of the busiest ports, and is a leader in the science and technology market. One factor of this is the family life and the culture that …

Writing For An Authentic Audience – One Teacher-Writer’S Narrative Journey, Danielle L. Defauw, Melissa Smith

Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education

The research literature shows many universities do not require elementary pre-service and in-service teachers to take a writing methodology course, yet elementary teachers must be prepared to teach K-8 writing. This qualitative case study highlights a beginning elementary in-service teacher’s experiences enrolled in a K-8 writing methodology course designed to strengthen her teacher-writer voice for authentic purposes using the writing workshop framework. Using narrative inquiry’s critical event approach to analyze and compare the teacher’s and her peers’ data (writer’s notebook, reflections, surveys, interviews, written selections, field note journal), this research article details her case study as a critical incident to …

Contrary to popular belief, teaching and learning in an online environment is not easier or less work than a traditional classroom. It takes intentionality, discipline and commitment from both the instructor and the student. However, the flexibility offered by online programs makes this option increasingly appealing. With this growing demand, online instructors must think critically about the content, strategically plan activities and align outcomes with diverse student goals. All …

What Are "Inclusive Pedagogies"? What Must Faculty Do Differently To Teach Inclusively?, Jean Keller, Kyhl Lyndgaard, Jeffrey Dubois, Kelly A. Berg, Charles W. Wright

Forum Lectures

At the 2016 All Campus Forum President Hinton called for us to create an "ecosystem of inclusion" at CSB/SJU. Faculty members' work with students is central to creating such an ecosystem, but what, after all, do we mean by "inclusion?" In this presentation, FYS and Humanities Mellon cohort members provide an overview of our evolving understanding of "inclusive pedagogy," the research that supports it, as well as examples of such pedagogies that we are implementing in our fall 2016 courses.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

An m-learning maturity model is put forward in this research to assess the mobile technology adoption rates in universities and higher educational institutes. The model is derived from Capability Maturity Model (CMM), which has been widely used in organizations to gauge the adoption of various new processes. Five levels of m-learning maturity are specified including preliminary, established, defined, structured, and continuous improvement. Each of these maturity levels is gauged through nine critical success factors (CSFs) in assessment questionnaires. The CSFs used in measuring instrument of the model are adopted from three of our previous empirical studies. Using an assessment questionnaire …

Class Activities That Create A Climate For Active Learning!, Barbara Carder

Learning Showcase 2016: A Celebration of Discovery, Transformation and Success

Active Learning is anything that students do in a classroom other than passively listening to an instructor's lecture. This includes everything from listening practices which help the students to absorb what they hear, to short writing exercises in which students react to lecture material, to complex group exercises in which students apply course material to "real life" situations and/or to new problems. Students are no longer mere receivers of information but they are given time to work with the topic. This chart compares traditional lectures with active learning.

Learning Showcase 2016: A Celebration of Discovery, Transformation and Success

Many researchers have compared the characteristics of online and face-to-face learning to find out best learning approach over last decades. This research led to a new learning concept-hybrid learning - that combines the best features of both approaches and overcomes many of their limitations. The major benefits of the hybrid approach are that the students can directly interact with their instructor and classmates in the face-to-face setting, while they have more time for thoughtful reflection and participation through asynchronous written communication in the online setting. With the benefits of hybrid learning, there has been a large increase in the number …

Many non-traditional higher education institutions have built their cyber security and computer science programs {CSCS) to cater to the needs of adult, working learners. Focusing on this demographic has implications for course and program design. Design approaches have therefore focused on strategies aimed at translating knowledge into learning nuggets specific to the adult learner, enabling day one job-readiness upon graduation. Recently, there has been increased focus on CSCS education at the high school level. The computer science for all initiative was announced recently by US President Obama, and there have been increased creativity on the part of higher education institutions …
