As the University of Dayton seeks to distinguish itself through curricular innovation and creating a holistic, integrated and relationship rich learning environment for our students it is evident that doing so with an equitable mind frame is the secret sauce for success. Engaging all students in a meaningful and holistic learning experience where all students participate in rich development opportunities and persist to graduation at higher rates requires a deeper understanding of the why. (ex. Why are some students not engaging? Why do some students fall through the cracks? Why are some students unsatisfied with their University of Dayton …

Virtual Academic Coaching (Vac): A Practical Technology For Student Engagement, Jessica Gregor, Paul Gregor
Learning Teaching Forum
Virtual academic coaching (vAC), distinct from the roles and responsibilities of post-secondary educators or counselors, is a novel method of higher education student development and retention, and is quickly becoming established at both public and private universities throughout the United States and abroad. Although relatively new to the canon of student success in higher education, virtual coaching is foundationally based in longstanding tenets of adult education and relies on principles which educators and counselors have recognized since the formalization of the post secondary classroom. Positive research into efficacy of the virtual academic coaching profession lends credibility to its potential for …

Thinking Outside The Box For Experiential Student Learning: Development Of Remote Experiential Learning And Volunteering During The Pandemic, Amy Christopher
Learning Teaching Forum
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, experiential learning for health care professional programs struggled to find clinical rotation sites and provide students in the didactic curricular phase opportunities to apply health education outside of the classroom. Many healthcare sites and community health screening events were prohibited during an extended period of time due to pandemic isolation. As a health educator, exploration of remote experiential learning took creative planning to ensure students were able to apply their medical knowledge in real-life situations, give back to their community according to Marianist charisms, and fulfill healthcare-related volunteer service hour requirements.

Teaching To Develop Perspective, Skills, Confidence, And Identity As Problem-Solving Engineers, Russell Kirk Pirlo
Research and Reflection on Learning and Teaching in Higher Education
The “core” of an engineering degree program typically comprises the concepts, equations, and technical skills needed, as well as their practical application to common problems of the profession. This core is then divided into the “content” that must be covered in each course. It is widely recognized, however, that successful individuals do not thrive as professionals on content alone. Thus, there is significant and increasing emphasis across higher education to “educate the whole person.” These efforts aim to develop “deep” qualities like grit, critical thinking, perseverance, learning from failure, valuing diversity, teamwork, leadership, curiosity, recognizing opportunity, creating value, and acting …

Bridging Worlds: The Role Of Universities In Promoting Human Rights, Satang Nabaneh
Research and Reflection on Learning and Teaching in Higher Education
I believe that a compassionate and harmonious society can only be created when the rights of everyone, without distinction, are recognized, appreciated, respected and safeguarded by all others, including in all Nation States. Thus, my end goal is to contribute to a more equitable and just world while shedding light on the issues that marginalized communities are facing and advocating for meaningful 40 and impactful changes to the world order that perpetuate these injustices and inequalities.

Preparing Future Leaders In The Arts Through The Community Arts Engagement Certificate Program: What I Learned From Teaching The First Introductory Seminar, Sharon Davis Gratto
Research and Reflection on Learning and Teaching in Higher Education
The University of Dayton’s Community Arts Engagement certificate program was recently launched with the teaching of its first introductory seminar. The program and this course were conceived to be broader in scope for arts majors than the more familiar arts administration minor program. Several of the outcomes of the seminar—both those planned and those unforeseen—can be informative in thinking more expansively about experiential learning and community collaboration in arts education or other disciplines. This article represents a narrative description of the program and its introductory seminar and a personal reflection after teaching the seminar for the first time.

Calling All Students? Enrollment In Community-Engaged Learning Courses At A Marianist University, Molly Malany Sayre, Castel V. Sweet, Kelly Bohrer
Research and Reflection on Learning and Teaching in Higher Education
‘Community’ is a pervasive concept at the University of Dayton, a Catholic, Marianist institution in Dayton, Ohio. As such, it was unknown how students who enrolled in community engaged learning (CEL) courses were different from their peers in demographic characteristics, previous experiential learning, and views of community engagement. Findings can inform CEL recruitment as well as evaluation of CEL outcomes, especially at institutions with a similar values orientation. This mixed-methods study indicates that among four semesters of students in three selected CEL courses, few differences were found with students in non-CEL control groups. One significant difference found was in racial …

This white paper details the findings of a research study conducted in 2022 over a six month period, in collaboration with a group of international cross-sector partners, as part of a Global Victoria EdTech Innovation Alliance initiative. Edalex’s Innovation Sprint aimed to increase learners’ confidence in the expression of their workplace skills by issuing a Personal Evidence Record of the skills they had developed in their studies. This evidence could then be shared with employers, sending a "signal to hire" by demonstrating workplace readiness or "signal of recognition" in the workplace of upskilling. This research validated the proof of concept …

Empowering Hopeful Student Leaders At The Catholic Social Ministry Gathering, Nick Cardilino
Learning Teaching Forum
Since 2013, Campus Ministry's Center for Social Concern has brought a small group of students to the Catholic Social Ministry Gathering in Washington, D.C. In their Young Leaders Initiative program, students learn about social justice issues and how they relate to Catholic teaching. On the fourth day, they have the opportunity to meet with their congressional representatives and senators or their aides to discuss three legislative issues that the U.S. Bishops are advocating for. A panel of past participants will talk about what they learned, how they grew as leaders and how the experience gave them hope for positive change …

How can a humanities-based mini-course that employs experiential learning help first-year students better understand their vocation by serving others? For the past year, teams of faculty and staff at UD have worked out answers to this complicated question, developing four versions of new mini-course students will take this spring: Educating the Whole Person. Each section of this mini-course will be taught collaboratively by a faculty or staff member with the aid of a community partner. By studying a core set of texts in the humanities, serving others through experiential learning, and reflecting deeply on their own vocations, students will learn …

Education Design Lab, through professional input and focus groups, developed eight badges that address the instruction of “soft skills” to postsecondary students. With the emergence of alternative credentialing and badging, Education Design Lab wanted to contribute to the evidence of student confidence differences as attributed to completing the badge content as expressed on their resume, interview, and through application or example. Postsecondary institutions were engaged in this evaluation across the nation and allowed for three differing viewpoints on badge importance and expression – student, instruction, and employer.

Executive Summary Resiliency Pilot Program – Liberty High School With Community Partners: Youthbuild Dayton And University Of Dayton, Brian Laduca, Jerry Farley
IACT Reports, Publications and Resources
Research led by Boston University Professor V. Scott Solberg has shown that among matched groups of students, resiliency is the key factor in determining why one group succeeds academically while others do not. There are six interrelated resiliency skills that can be measured and taught: Valuing Education. Academic Confidence, Connectedness, Stress Management, Health and Well-Being, and Intrinsic Motivation. And when students’ resiliency increases, their academic performance improves, along with attendance, behavior, and graduation rates, as well as significant improvements in engagement, confidence, perseverance, and postsecondary readiness. Because of research on the powerful impact of improved resiliency, a commitment was …

Building Community And Integrating Global Learning As A Remote Faculty Member In Ud’S Edd In Leadership For Organizations Program, Aryn Baxter
Learning Teaching Forum
The transition to teaching remotely requires intentional reflection on what it takes to develop and sustain a sense of community and connection when joining an institution from a distance.
In this session, I reflect and share lessons learned from my transition from working face to face as a faculty member and international programs administrator to working remotely as a faculty member teaching in the University of Dayton’s EdD in Leadership for Organizations program. This transition has entailed not only a shift from face to face to remote work, but also a prolonged reflection on a commitment to transformative global learning. …

Loss and grief are challenging enough in “normal” times, but with the pandemic, it seems that everyone has undergone some sort of loss. For many who have experienced the loss of health, a loved one, a relationship, or other significant parts of their lives, the pandemic has exacerbated the challenges.
UD’s mission references “educating the whole person and linking learning and scholarship with leadership and service.” In what ways can we rediscover the link between the vast scholarship on grief and our service to others who are experiencing that grief? How can we demonstrate the family spirit and care for …

During the 2019-2020 academic year, this project team reviewed tools for intercultural and global learning and assessment. Our objective was to consider opportunities to support student growth and development and assess student learning at the program and/or institutional levels. We looked at some instruments we currently use, along with several others. In addition, we reviewed several content platforms that support student learning. While each had its pros and cons, we identified three tools for a pilot:
- Assessment - The Global Engagement Survey
- Content platform - Solidarity Modules
- Content platform - Global Competency Certificate
Participants will have the opportunity to learn …

The Global Learning Academy is an innovative global and intercultural learning program that combines online courses with a two-week theme-based field experience at key international, U.S., and local/virtual locations. Much like higher education in general, education abroad and international education were turned upside down with the pandemic. In response, we have developed a creative new model that will allow us to meet some of our long-standing priorities around access for a changing student population; interdisciplinary learning on critical global themes; integration with existing academic programs; and flexibility and adaptability in uncertain times. We will share plans for this new model, …

The pursuit of the whole person through models like 3H (head, heart, hands) my miss a critical physical aspect within which the wholeness develops and exists. One such aspect originates at the earth’s two versions. Humankind has a good understanding of one version and little if any of the second. Such lack of knowledge would adversely affect the development and maintenance of human wholeness. This proposal considers a workshop at the 2020 Learning and Teaching Forum to address this knowledge deficiency in University of Dayton’s community through participative knowledge processing and systems thinking.

Majors level Human Anatomy has long been taught as a gatekeeping class for medical schools of graduate schools, and has been highly professionalized due to this. It has also been constructed historically in a very hierarchical paradigm that has multiple oppressions supporting both the study of anatomy and the anatomy classroom. Besides these social issues around anatomy, there are the pedagogical issues of treating this material as something to just memorize and not understand that can cause problems for a student of anatomy. Disrupting these processes can be a very powerful force for anti-racism, anti-sexism, and hopefully …

Cross boundary and collaborative education have existed in the past. The University of Dayton’s attempt to reignite these concepts of education is in line with its Catholic Marianist identity. Education can be achieved in silos or collaboration of various entities on campus, both face-to-face and in current times, online as well. This presentation will offer ways in which the Institute for Pastoral Initiatives has in the past achieved collaboration with other departments on campus, and how this can be done across the board for maximum student development.
