The purpose of this study was to examine the predictive ability of MCAT scores on the pre-clinical grade point averages of Black medical students. Underrepresented in medicine students, including students of color and those from low socioeconomic backgrounds have often been prevented from pursuing medical education. This is due to the heavy reliance on numeric metrics including undergraduate grade point averages and MCAT scores for admissions decisions. (DeCarvalho et al., 2018; Linville, 2015; Reede, 1999). The purpose of this study was to better understand how LGBT+ college students find a safe space on college and university campuses when there is not one already provided for them. Strange and Banning’s (2015) four environments served as the theoretical framework. Data were collected through individual interviews with six college students who identify within the LGBT+ community and attend a mid-sized institution in South Georgia which does not have an established safe space. Students indicated locations like the library, front lawn, and individuals such as faculty, staff, and student organizations offered safe spaces. The results can better inform student …

This phenomenological study captured the experiences of elementary educators with the purpose of gathering their perceptions of the use of restorative practices and positive behavior supports in their schools with a particular focus on how these programs influenced school climate, their professional efficacy, and their job satisfaction. Results of interviews lead to the emergence of seven major themes, which were the importance of understanding the underlying causes of student behavior, change, common practices of positive behavior supports and restorative practices, benefits for students, benefits for educators, struggles with implementation, and suggestions for implementation. The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenographic study was to understand the experiences, backgrounds, and perspectives of new, primary role academic advisors at four-year public institutions in the United States. Research on advising has provided insight into advising best practices and the student perceptions of academic advising; however, there is little research illustrating current primary role academic advisors and their experience, or perhaps lack thereof.

Racial disproportionality in special education has been a problem of practice since Dunn called attention to it in 1968. Research has demonstrated the adverse effects on students including stigma, labeling, reduced access to high-quality educational opportunities, restrictive settings, and lower expectations and educational outcomes. Little research on disproportionality has examined how individual characteristics and societal factors intersect with specific school variables and contexts. This study examined the factors influencing university prioritization of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Using a framework grounded in organizational behavior—I examine commitment and ethical climate from an open systems perspective. This research was further informed by the Inclusive Excellence Framework—a meta-analysis aimed to integrate DEI efforts through dimensions of organizational behavior, and Smith et al.’s (1997) framework analysis of DEI research. This thesis explores DEI values and objectives, the procedures to address discrimination, and DEI elements and established structures. This thesis seeks to understand how students who leave college without a degree, or non-completers, experience broad access institutions in an effort to shift our thinking from the student characteristics that predict college dropout to how broad access institutions can better serve students and improve graduation rates. To answer this question, I conducted interviews with former students who had recently attended a broad access institution and left without a degree. Results show that participants expressed internalized views of the traditional college student archetype, which was reinforced through their college experience.
