Telemarketing: Building Audiences For University Theatres, Kevin Marshall
Telemarketing: Building Audiences For University Theatres, Kevin Marshall
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article describes the use of telemarketing as a tool for building audiences for university theatres. Drawing on campaigns at the University of Alabama, it explains how combining direct mail with telephone follow-up significantly increased subscription sales over multiple seasons. The discussion emphasizes the importance of training callers, selecting effective coordinators, and using motivated work-study students as sales staff. Strategies included incentive systems, a structured three-week campaign, and techniques for handling common objections during calls. Additional practices such as offering free tickets as promotional bonuses, tracking subscriber attendance, and over-selling to account for no-shows helped maximize revenue and audience engagement. …
Conflict And Negotiation Courses In The Curricula, Fred E. Jandt
Conflict And Negotiation Courses In The Curricula, Fred E. Jandt
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article reports the results of a national survey on the presence of conflict and negotiation courses in communication curricula. Questionnaires were distributed to four-year and graduate institutions, with findings showing that over twenty percent offered at least one course in the area, and a smaller number offered two or more. Most courses were located in departments of speech or communication, were upper-division or graduate electives, and were introduced primarily in the late 1970s and 1980s. Enrollments averaged around twenty to thirty students per section, and demand was expected to grow. Faculty teaching these courses were most often tenured or …

An Investigation Of Articles Produced In The Communication Discipline By Institution: A Journal By Journal, Year By Year Analysis, Vernon O. Ray, Kittie W. Watson, Larry L. Barker, Robert N. Hall
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article presents a year-by-year and journal-by-journal analysis of article production in the communication discipline from 1980 to 1985. The study builds on earlier research identifying the fifty most productive institutions and examines both the number of articles produced annually and the distribution of publications across eleven major journals. Co-authorship was accounted for by dividing credit among authors’ institutions. Results show that top-ranked institutions maintained steady levels of publication, while lower-ranked institutions fluctuated more significantly in output. The analysis highlights trends in journal preferences among institutions and considers how editorial affiliations may influence publishing patterns. Although the study focuses on …

The University Of Northern Colorado's Extended Degree: Program In Speech Communication, Robert F. Ross, Dennis F, Warnemunde
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article describes the design, delivery, and evaluation of an off-campus Master of Arts program in speech communication at the University of Northern Colorado. Established in the early 1970s, the program was developed to serve adult, nontraditional students, including military and civilian professionals, through a weekend-format delivery system. The discussion outlines the program’s history, administrative organization, and unique features such as rigorous faculty qualifications, academic advising, site coordination, and extended library services. Survey feedback from graduates highlighted personal growth, career advancement, and skill development as major benefits, with faculty quality, curriculum design, and weekend scheduling identified as program strengths. Concerns …

Nast Accreditation Of Theatre And Film And Video Programs, Robert C. Hansen
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article explains the accreditation process of the National Association of Schools of Theatre, an organization founded in 1978 to promote quality standards and professional development in theatre education. It outlines NAST’s objectives, including fostering instructional excellence, encouraging experimentation, supporting institutional self-study, and involving professional theatre groups in curricular development. Membership is open to professional training schools and academic institutions offering theatre, film, and video programs, with divisions based on degree type and educational philosophy. The accreditation process requires a self-study report, site visit by evaluators, and review by commissioners, leading to membership or accreditation for a five-year period. The …
Developing An Extended Degree Program, Keith A. Miller
Developing An Extended Degree Program, Keith A. Miller
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article examines the development of extended degree programs designed to serve nontraditional students who are often older, employed, and unable to attend traditional campuses. It highlights the unique needs of adult learners, such as balancing multiple responsibilities, valuing practical application, and bringing significant life experience to their studies. The discussion outlines the philosophical and structural foundations of extended programs, noting that they must represent more than simply relocating a campus curriculum. Various administrative structures, curricular models, and program elements are reviewed, including flexible scheduling, credit for prior learning, and integration of community resources. Key considerations include faculty readiness, institutional …
