Just Tell Us What You Want, Marilla Svinicki Jan 1992

Just Tell Us What You Want, Marilla Svinicki

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Mike Smith was assigned a history section of one of those writing across the curriculum courses, the kind where he was supposed to introduce students to the joy of writing as a learning experience. On top of that, it was a required state history course the contents of which most students had in high school. So he was pretty sure students would be coming into the course with bad attitudes right off the bat. But he loved his subject and knew how exciting it could be once you understood the mysteries and problem-solving aspects of history instead of just concentrating …

The Case Of The Missed Exam, Emily C. Wadsworth Jan 1992

The Case Of The Missed Exam, Emily C. Wadsworth

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Professor Oliver W. Holmes has taught for many years and has come to the conclusion that the students in his American Government general education course do their best work if he is very precise about his expectations of them. In line with this philosophy, Professor Holmes requires that everyone take the final examination on the day that it is scheduled. The only excuse for missing the examination is an illness that requires a trip to the doctor. Thus, he will give a make-up final exam only if the student brings in a doctor's excuse.

Use of the Case entitled ''Missed …

How Can I Be Heard?, Luann Wilkerson

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Today is the second day of five one-hour tutorials on The Case of the Fainting Soccer Player. The six first-year medical students have been struggling to explain the sequence of events experienced by the 17 year old woman in the case who collapses while playing soccer with subsequent ventricular fibrillation and coma. An older female student, Pat, had spoken little during the first 15 minutes of discussion as the group alternately considered the role of brain and heart in the patient's collapse. Finally, Pat quietly commented.

The Return Of Bill Jasper, Kenneth J. Zahorski Jan 1992

The Return Of Bill Jasper, Kenneth J. Zahorski

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

As Bill Jasper left his office and walked down the hall toward his classroom, he found it hard to believe that only a few months earlier he had begun teaching his first class at University College. A wistful smile played at the comers of his mouth as he thought back to that enlightening, but somewhat unsettling, experience. "I was greener than a spring apple," he muttered. "I wish I had known then what I know now."

This study focused on the supply of and demand for educational administrators in Illinois. Practicing administrators and students in educational administration classes in Illinois colleges and universities were surveyed to determine forthcoming retirement patterns and to determine if the pool of potential candidates for positions created by those retirements is adequate. Factors which facilitate change, as well as those that inhibit change, were also assessed for each of the two groups surveyed. Survey results were analyzed using descriptive statistics and correlational procedures. The findings of the study support references being made to the possibility of an impending shortage of administrators …

Adopting An Eight Period Day Schedule: An Analysis Of The Merits For Oakland Community Unit School District #5, Norman L. Tracy Jan 1992

Adopting An Eight Period Day Schedule: An Analysis Of The Merits For Oakland Community Unit School District #5, Norman L. Tracy

Masters Theses

In coping with financial problems and changing demands on students' course selections, it has become increasingly more difficult to provide secondary school students with the best education possible. This seems to be especially true for the smaller school districts. Many small school districts have reduced their staffs to the "bare bones" due to budget cuts. Such reductions have often resulted in fewer course offerings and a reduced number of section offerings for required classes. When this problem was coupled with the Illinois Board of Higher Education's increased college entrance requirements that high school students must complete, the common result was …

Masters Theses

In the fall of 1992, P.L. 87-559 will change the way schools and districts in Illinois are evaluated for the purpose of recognition. This is commonly known as Illinois' new accountability law. This law shifts recognition from solely legal compliance to include school performance and school improvement.

Five educational indicators were chosen for Illinois' new accountability law by the State Legislature in conjunction with the Illinois State Board of Education. This research study measured administrators perceptions about the five educational indicators used in Illinois' new accountability law. In addition, ten national educational indicators were selected and administrators were requested to …

Effectiveness Of A Truancy Prevention Program In Education Service Regions 15 & 20, Michael W. Harris Jan 1992

Effectiveness Of A Truancy Prevention Program In Education Service Regions 15 & 20, Michael W. Harris

Masters Theses

Truancy is a problem that many school districts must address on a daily basis. One method used to address this problem in Education Service Regions 15 & 20 in southeastern Illinois is a truancy prevention program. This program was presented to six randomly selected second grade classes. Each of these six classes was then paired with a similar second grade class in the same county. This second group of classes was the control group in which no truancy prevention program was presented. The six truancy prevention programs were presented in early September. Attendance rate data were collected for all twelve …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Janie M. Adams Jan 1992

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Janie M. Adams

Graduate Research Papers

Some of the articles and books that are referred to in the body of this paper are written by African- Americans about the plight of our African-American children in yesterday's, today's and tomorrow's schools. In writing this paper I address some basic needs for all children. Yet of most pressing concern to me are the African-American student and other students of color. Brown versus Topeka, Kansas was in 1954, but in the eyes of many African-Americans separate but equal is alive and well. With the prospect of a voucher system looming on the horizon it is being driven home even …

Finally, the policies, procedures, and special programs and services specific to Mukilteo Elementary School in the Mukilteo School District were examined to select the most pertinent information to include in an orientation handbook designed specifically for this school. Ideas for additional ways to …

Volunteer Assisted Reading, Linda Laurene Young Jan 1992

Volunteer Assisted Reading, Linda Laurene Young

All Graduate Projects

The problem investigated in this study relates to the need in schools today to find ways of providing educational support assistance for classroom teachers as part of the classroom learning process. With the continued rise in school enrollments, it is difficult for school funding to keep up with growing educational demands. Favorable student-teacher ratio issues emphasize the need to provide additional help for the classroom teacher. Finding additional classroom help has become a major concern; parents' commitments to employment and social obligations have changed their availability to participate at the schoolhouse and have lessened parent-child contact time (Cassidy, 1981). According …

Introduction, James Jennings Jan 1992

Introduction, James Jennings

Trotter Review

This issue of the Trotter Institute Review is devoted to a two-part proposition. The first is that institutions, agencies, businesses, and schools must begin to reflect the increasingly diverse ethnic and racial characteristics of American society. America is in the midst of a demographic revolution. It is unfortunate that some educators have chosen to ignore the social, economic, and intellectual implications of this change and that others have even become angry and attacked efforts to create an appreciation of multiculturalism.

This unfortunate resistance to the implications of America's unfolding demography leads to the second proposition reflected in this issue of …

[First paragraph] Careful unit planning as a framework for daily lesson plans can help teachers individualize instruction, manage time and classroom behavior, bring cohesive-ness to a series of related daily lessons, and ultimately improve student achievement. Principals can help teachers by providing clear expectations and a consistent framework for unit planning. School and district philosophy will help determine the particular model chosen from the wide variety available. Following is one format.
