This article aims to promote alternative assessment in the field of speech communication. Speech communication departments in a number of colleges and universities have adopted alternative practices as they have developed their assessment programs. For example, the faculty at the University of Missouri-Kansas City examined and redesigned their curriculum so that students were required to show competence in interpersonal communication, critical thinking, language use, leadership, reading, research, public speaking, cultural appreciation, writing, decision making, theoretical understanding, and ethical/philosophical appreciation. Academic departments in China have parallels with academic departments in the U.S. but there are marked differences. Key differences between the Chinese and U.S. systems deal with professors serving as role models and the selection of who will work as professors. This article argues that speech codes are not the answer to curbing offensive communication. The typical response to curbing verbal aggression on campuses throughout the U.S. has come in the form of speech codes--designed to prevent offensive communication. Speech codes, however, are not new phenomena to the U.S. landscape. Landmark Supreme Court decisions have provided numerous types of speech codes for identifying messages falling within and outside the boundaries of legally protected speech. This article examines a framework for assessing communication effectiveness in higher education in the U.S. In light of cost concerns, most colleges and universities will opt for using internal expertise. This option is particularly feasible for post-secondary institutions in that they are likely to have available in-house expertise needed to conduct an effective assessment. The step of identifying available expertise from communication and other appropriate units is needed to gain broad expertise and multiple perspectives, avoid attributions of private agendas, and encourage units under analysis to view the process as a community effort. This article focuses on the influence of telecommunication technology on newspaper readership among college students in the U.S. during the 1990s. The findings presented suggest an explanatory role for such factors as age in readership. Income and marital status are also important correlates of readership, perhaps because they gauge one's stake or integration in the local community. The resulting loss of afternoon leisure was a leading cause in the decline of afternoon papers, which have been substituted with nightly TV news reporting. This article discusses several aspects of mass communication education in the U.S. during the 1990s. According to professor J. M. McCall, communication educators should be telling communication professionals three things. The first is that academics do know what the profession requires. This article addressed affirmative action in academe by examining the judicial justification for the policy and the 1973 and 1983 American Association of University Professor (AAUP) recommendations. Those reviews indicated that the Supreme Court supported affirmative action using distributive justice principles. Moreover, the AAUP recommendations are also based on distributive justice principles. In the 1973 report, the AAUP called mostly for increased opportunities for women and minorities to enter the academy. In its 1983 report, the AAUP reiterated the need to alter the workplace to include more women and minorities and added a call for to remove barriers to tenure …

This article discusses censorship problems in commercial and collegiate theatre. An examination of censorship in the American theatre will reveal the fact that the subject has been weighed and viewed by the court from a number of perspectives. One such view was that, until the mid-twentieth century, court cases commonly were decided on the basis of the literary merit of the plays in question. The literature identified nine basic areas in which to divide the selection process. This study examined the development of a School Improvement Plan for the Oblong School District in preparation for a Quality Review visit. The Illinois State Board of Education was mandated by legislation pasted in 1984 and 1992 to evaluate the School Improvement Plan of each school district in Illinois. A survey of 78 early childhood programs in Southern Illinois was conducted. The purpose of this study was to identify elements commonly found in existing new teacher induction programs and incorporate those elements into an induction program that could be implemented almost exclusively by a single building level administrator. The information was obtained through an examination of existing literature and contacts with current practitioners who were involved in induction activities.

Survey instruments were provided for participating administrators and the new teachers in their buildings. The surveys identified elements of the existing program and the perceived importance of those elements from the perspectives of the administrator and the teacher.

A history of sexual harassment traces the recognition and development of the issue as a social problem in the workplace and on college campuses. A review of research literature reveals both percentages of students involved and the effects on those students of academic or teacher/student sexual harassment. A brief overview of institutional policy statements shows that some colleges/universities have responded to the issue with a ban on all consensual amorous relationships between teachers and students; some ban such relationships only when a supervisory relationship also exists, and some do neither. The purpose of this field study was to determine the effect of participation in extracurricular activities upon academic achievement. Senior students at Flora High School were asked to respond to several survey questions that provided information concerning their participation or lack of participation in extracurricular activities. In addition, they expressed opinions related to their own personal involvement in extracurricular activities. The cumulative grade point averages of participants and nonparticipants were also reported.

The results indicated that the respondents of the Class of 1994 of Flora High School strongly felt that participation in extracurricular activities had an effect upon academic achievement. …
