Telecommunications Research Article Productivity In The U.S.: 1985-1993, David Atkin

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article discusses the telecommunications research article productivity in the U.S. from 1985 to 1993. Scholars have intensified their focus on research productivity as an evaluative measure of communication programs in the country. Such information seems especially important in an era of fiscal austerity measures dating to the late 1980, which has seen enrollments in mass communication decline. Although scholarly productivity may not be a remedy for troubled programs, past work confirms a link between productivity and program size which acts as a hedge against downsizing.

The Politics Of Undergraduate Curricula In A Downsizing Culture: A Primer For Department Chairs, Mark Hickson Iii

This article discusses the political factors affecting the decision making regarding the curricula in higher education in the U.S. The courses taught in a department provide the campus community with a perception of the department, but curricular decisions must first be made within the department. The department should agree about a total number of courses in the curriculum. The department should have an understanding of administrative perspectives on curricula. Curricula development should be discussed with faculty in other departments that may feel communication studies in infringing on their subject matter.

This article discusses the role of the Goals 2,000: Educate America Act in expanding communication instruction requirement across the undergraduate core curriculum. The act provides funds to underwrite states development and implementation of content and performance standards and associated assessment methodologies directed towards helping students meet nationally determined academic and occupational skill standards. The National Council on Education Standards and Testing recommended the development of education standards that will provide direction for voluntary compliance by the states. The speech communication field has been actively involved in developing a national assessment agenda and corresponding communication skills assessment instruments and methodologies.

This article looks at the impact of social support on college adjustment among traditional campus residents and commuters. One consistent controversy concerning the conceptualization of social support concerns what actions, resources, and outcomes should be considered relevant to the provision of social support. As comparisons are made between commuters and campus residents, it appears that the impact of social support on college adjustment in these populations may vary in terms of which type of social support is relevant to various aspects of adjustment. This article reports on the description of merger applied to the Montana State University context. Eastern was renamed on July 1, 1994, as Montana State University (MSU)-Billings. The Billings Vocational Technical Institution was then merged with MSU-Billings, and renamed the College of Technology. There is considerable debate on campus as to the nature of the merger. This article reports on the importance of research as a standard for tenure and merit for college professors. The reasons for increasing the emphasis on research are probably several and varied depending on the various internal pressures of the institution. Another issue involves the separation that a research emphasis creates between the student and the instructor. The alternative line of argument suggests a connection between research productivity and teaching quality. Research shows not only knowledge but shows a dedication to the content and material not possible for a person that only teaches.

An essay on the effects censorship policies being implemented by the U.S. government on rulings made by the judiciary system. There are those who still refuse to accept the fact that the U.S. judiciary system has determined both students and faculty members have the constitutional right to express their individual or collective thoughts to all people within or outside of their communities. Censorship has been imposed upon university student newspapers throughout the country despite the aforementioned U.S. federal judiciary rulings. Administration-sponsored censorship policies have been instituted by those refusing to accept the fact that bad news occurs on their campuses.

In simplest terms, the university system merger was designed to accomplish greater unity and effect economies of scale while guarding against mission drift. Change is disruptive but also productive if effected properly. Ultimately, restructuring success will be measured less by an organizational chart and more on our ability to build public trust, confidence and ownership in higher education.

This article presents the author's comments on reasons for the perception that communication units are not central to the University and its mission. First, our name itself is a problem. This can mean that one studies mass media, as I do, or it may refer to scholars of interpersonal communication, rhetorical analysis, cultural studies, organizational studies, or a variety of other subspecialties. Problem. This study examines the instructional practices, perceptions, and attitudes of multi-grade teachers in one- and two-room schools in the Seventh-day Adventist educational system.

Method. The researcher developed a survey and mailed it to a randomly selected stratified sample of 500 teachers in one- and two-room schools in the Seventh-day Adventist educational system in the United States and Canada. Two hundred eighty surveys were returned; 276 were used in the data analysis. Descriptive statistics give a demographic picture of these teachers--the practices used, their perceived levels of expertise, methods of grouping students for instruction, and their assessment of multi-grade students' …

A considerable amount of research conducted in Europe and elsewhere except in Pakistan indicates that the in-service teacher education programmes facilitated in the implementation and institutionalization of change at school level geared towards the school improvement process (Dalin et.al, 1992). In the past, the in-service education programmes for teachers in Pakistan received little attention of the government since its focus was on the quantitative expansion rather than qualitative augmentation of education. The Perception Of Role Delineation Between Mississippi Public School Board Presidents And Superintendents, Glenn Franklin Boyce Jr.

The study's purpose was to survey the perceptions of Mississippi's elected and appointed public school superintendents and board presidents concerning their decision-making roles and responsibilities. Of the 298 surveys mailed 61 (74%) of the 83 appointed superintendents and 40 (60%) of the 66 elected superintendents responded. Seventy-three (49%) of the board presidents responded to the survey.

The survey instrument was divided into four decision-making areas: policy and procedure, curriculum and instruction, personnel, and school business management. The study tested eight hypotheses at the.05 level of significance. Four of these hypotheses stated that there is no significant difference in the role …

The effectiveness of Eastern Illinois University's reinstatement policy was investigated in an attempt to determine what criteria were used to establish the current reinstatement policy and to further decide whether or not the criteria used have been accurate in predicting academic success for reinstated students at this institution. Chi-square analysis was used to assess the relationship, if any, between 14 variables and academic success following reinstatement: (1) quality point deficiency (QPD), (2) grade level at the time of dismissal, (3) race, (4) gender, (5) number of semesters in attendance prior to dismissal, (6) community college attendance during the absence from …

Attitudes of 79 educators toward inclusion were investigated in relation to specific job titles, years experience, and knowledge level. Knowledge level was determined by performance on an inclusion quiz. Questionnaires were completed by subjects to determine attitude. The results indicated that performance on the quiz was related to responses on some questions. Those with more knowledge appeared to be in favor of inclusion. This is consistent with past studies. Attitudes were similar across educational disciplines. Years of experience may have some impact on attitude if coupled with other variables. The purpose of this study was to determine whether participation in the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Prekindergarten Program for Children At Risk of Academic Failure had impact on a child's future academic placement. Current uncertainty regarding continued ISBE or federal funding of programs makes such a longitudinal study imperative. This study examined the 1995-1996 academic placement, including additional resources required, i.e., Title 1, speech, or learning disabled services, for 40 children who participated in the 1990-1991 Hamilton-Jefferson Counties Educational Service Region cooperative prekindergarten program in Jefferson County. The purpose of this study was to determine the relative effectiveness and desirability of identified key components of the behavior disorders program delivered by the Wabash and Ohio Valley Special Education District in southeastern Illinois. Sixty-one school superintendents, building principals, and local coordinators of special education responded to a survey addressing key components of the behavior disorders program: technical assistance, timeliness of the Individualized Education Program process, thoroughness of the Individualized Education Program process, academic remediation, behavioral remediation, transition coordination, and followup services. In recent years, new methods of evaluating teachers have been introduced and recommended by educational experts.

This study was conducted to determine the methods and procedures currently used in three midwestern states to evaluate secondary education teachers and to investigate secondary school principals' perceptions regarding those methods and procedures.

The study, which took place during the spring of 1996, included a survey of a random sample of 300 secondary school principals in Illinois, Iowa and Indiana through the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

The purpose of the study was to determine the existence of a relationship between levels of teacher occupational stress and perception of administrative support. Six secondary schools were chosen from six randomly selected school districts stratified by size and geographic location. The predictor variable was administrative support; the criterion variable was level of stress. Instrumentation included the Teacher Stress Inventory (TSI) and the Leadership Behavior Description Questionnaire Form XII (LBDQ Form XII). Ten factors of stress were measured: five were manifestations of stress, and five were sources of stress. The subjects, the majority of whom were females, did not exhibit …

This study provided an analytic description of the transition of one rural Georgia school as its staff sought to embrace the middle school concept. Development of such a description required that the researcher examine the school through the filter or sieve of change theory and in an holistic manner, using techniques appropriate to ethnohistorical, qualitative research. Specifically, the description spanned an eighteen-year, bounded period and used participant observation, individual and group interviews, and documentation to uncover the meaning participants in the school attached to the changes.
