What I Believe About Leadership And Education : A Reflective Essay, Matthew R. Bro Jan 2005

What I Believe About Leadership And Education : A Reflective Essay, Matthew R. Bro

Graduate Research Papers

The works of a great leader will brilliantly encompass many specific critical elements. One must consider the many different ways an individual leader's own unique personality can combine the critical elements together. The critical leadership elements combined with the individual's own unique personality traits will make one realize that to break down the critical elements of the exceptional leader is a daunting task.

We are very complex, fearfully and wonderfully made creatures (Psalm 139:14) that cannot be analyzed easily. However we have likely experienced great leadership, and have asked ourselves: Why it is that this person motivates me, challenges me, …

Superintendent Evaluation And Other Influences On The School Board And Superintendent Relationship: Measuring Strength Of Relationship, Sara A. Duvall

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

As schools in the United States resegregate and federal antipoverty programs lapse, the achievement gap widens once again. What can educational leaders do on their own to reverse this trend in the face of increased state and federal mandates, decreasing school funding, and community resistance to change? The purpose of this study was to determine the relative effects of factors (evaluation, conflict, political climate, superintendent influence, teaching & learning style, board training, and overall Strength of Relationship) that influence the board and superintendent relationship and to use these data to suggest strategies to support substantive change. A unique survey questionnaire …

A Preferred Vision For Leading Schools : A Reflective Essay, Deanne E.H. Lewis Jan 2005

A Preferred Vision For Leading Schools : A Reflective Essay, Deanne E.H. Lewis

Graduate Research Papers

"A school administrator is an educational leader who promotes the success of all students by ensuring management of the organization, operations, and resources for a safe, efficient, and effective learning environment" (Wilmore, 2002, p. 52). All children should be given equal opportunity for advancement and growth. What is challenging for one child may be boring and repetitive for another. Placing students in appropriate settings that will allow the appropriate level of challenge and pace of learning for each child is the goal for the creation of the differentiating classroom.

An Analysis Of Perceptions Of Online Instruction By Department Chairs In The Field Of Higher Educational Administration In The United States, Edna Lynn Levernier Jan 2005

An Analysis Of Perceptions Of Online Instruction By Department Chairs In The Field Of Higher Educational Administration In The United States, Edna Lynn Levernier

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

The rapid global emergence of a multi-billion dollar electronic (e)-leaming industry has forced department chairs in the field of educational leadership and administration in higher education institutions across the United States to assess the value, quality, and legitimacy of online instruction. For many, the concept of online education significantly challenges deeply held pedagogical beliefs and educational values such as academic freedom, protection of intellectual property rights, academic integrity, and quality. For others, the "fit" of online education with existing departmental and institutional mission statements, cultures, budgets, reward systems, policies and procedures, is unclear or uncertain. In an age where "technology …

Differentiating Biology Homework To Enhance Academic Achievement, Genevieve Finch Bertsos Jan 2005

Differentiating Biology Homework To Enhance Academic Achievement, Genevieve Finch Bertsos

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of the study is to determine if differentiating homework for biology will motivate students to complete and turn in homework, address the needs of diverse learners, and improve academic achievement. The rationale assumes there is a positive relationship between homework completion and academic achievement and that students have different learning styles that can be addressed by allowing choice of homework assignment based on Gardner’s multiple intelligences and Bloom’s taxonomy.

The research employs an experimental design composed of a control group (consisting of two classes) that received the traditional homework, and an experimental group (two classes) that was offered …

The other set of Connecticut schools systems is urban, comprised primarily of students of color, and of low socio-economic status. The purpose of this chapter is to focus on the latter set of schools, provide some history of their development, look at the indicators of poor progress in more detail, review options of ameliorating the urban school systems, including assessments of state efforts so far, and offer some perspectives and conclusions.

Quality Management In Higher Education, Andrea Luxton Jan 2005

Quality Management In Higher Education, Andrea Luxton

All Books

Higher education institutions have traditionally vied for renown for quality education, with external measurements such as achievement levels of graduating students and later graduate success as two evidences of that quality. In some countries external monitoring of final examinations has provided a measuring rod of institutional success; in others, other performance indicators have been used. In more recent years, however, significant focus has shifted internationally not just to evidence of institutional outcomes, but the internal processes by which quality is assured. Coupled with this has been an increased emphasis on the more formative elements of achieving quality, not just in …

Then we discuss current efforts to promote greater equity in the distribution of resources and improve student performance. We conclude with lessons and policy implications for New York State as it implements the CFE decision in New York City. These findings also apply to other large districts in the state, such as Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Albany. Our focus in …

Lifelong Learning For Older Persons In Hong Kong, Sze Sze, Stephanie Hui

Lingnan Theses

Lifelong learning (LL) has been widely regarded as one of the activities that can enhance well-being of the society and benefit older persons in terms of psychological, physical, mental, and cognitive well-being. In foreign countries like the Unites States of America, the United Kingdom, Finland, France, Australia, and also China, LL among older persons had been developed successfully. Hong Kong, in contrast, has no systematic planning for the development of LL even though the aged population is increasing rapidly. This research aims at constructing a LL model for older persons in Hong Kong. The theoretical framework of study focused on …

The Effects Of Consolidation On Extracurricular Activity Participation In Selected Arkansas High Schools, David W. Collins Jan 2005

The Effects Of Consolidation On Extracurricular Activity Participation In Selected Arkansas High Schools, David W. Collins

Theses and Dissertations

School reform initiatives have commonly included the highly controversial practice of school consolidation. These efforts by educators and lawmakers have been made to improve the quality and limit the cost of the educational system. While research exists on many effects of consolidation, findings have been mixed in determining the overall effectiveness of consolidating schools. Research has generally indicated a strong relationship between student participation in extracurricular activities and higher levels of student achievement. Little, if any, research has been conducted on the relationship between school consolidation and extracurricular activity participation. This study was conducted to determine the effects of consolidation …

Use Of An Advising Team, Jane E. Campbell, Randy Stuart Jan 2005

Use Of An Advising Team, Jane E. Campbell, Randy Stuart

Faculty Articles

The Michael J. Coles College of Business at Kennesaw State University uses selected faculty members on an Advising Team, and provides access to them through walk-in advising hours. Compared to our previous approach of assigning students to all faculty members, the benefits of this system for the students are more efficient and effective advising. Students have access to advising at more times, and are more likely to get correct answers quickly. The benefits for the faculty are that the faculty members on the Team enjoy advising and can have their performance expectations tailored to include advising, while those faculty members …

His Story/Her Story: A Dialogue About Including Men And Masculinities In The Women’S Studies Curriculum, B. Berila, J. Keller, C. Krone, Jason A. Laker, O. Mayers

Faculty Publications

The article discusses the issue of inclusion of men and masculinities in the Women's Studies curriculum. Women's Studies programs were started to compensate for the male domination in the academics. Women's Studies presented a platform where scholarship for women was produced and taken seriously, female students and faculty could find their say or voice, and theoretical investigations required for the advancement of the aims of the women's movement could take place. If the academy as a whole does not sufficiently integrate Women's Studies into the curriculum, integrating Men's Studies into Women's Studies might end up further marginalizing Women's Studies by …
