Assuring Quality In Belizean Higher Education: A Collective Case Study Of Institutional Perspectives And Practices, Neulin N. Villanueva
Assuring Quality In Belizean Higher Education: A Collective Case Study Of Institutional Perspectives And Practices, Neulin N. Villanueva
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This qualitative research study used a collective case study design to explore quality assurance practices and perceptions within Belize’s higher education institutions. Despite the passage of the National Accreditation Council of Belize Act (NACB Act) in 2004, the Council was never established and there remains, to date, no formal external quality assurance system in Belize. This study provides useful information for those policymakers and institutional leaders contemplating a way forward.
In-depth interviews were conducted with 17 academic leaders, including 2 presidents, 1 provost, 13 deans, and 1 quality assurance officer, drawn from 10 of the 12 existing local higher education …

Minimizing Reading Regression Through A Direct Instruction Summer Reading Program, Donald J. Pechous
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a Direct Instruction summer reading intervention program designed to minimize summer reading regression. The summer intervention program targeted the lowest quartile of readers in grades kindergarten through third grade from a suburban school district over a three-week period before the first official day of school. This intervention included specific and explicit teaching of skills to support reading fluency and comprehension. Can The Law Keep Pace With Technology? Regulating Student Use Of The Internet And Cyberspace, Charles J. Russo, Allan G. Osborne Jr.
Educational Leadership Faculty Publications
Who could have anticipated the effect of the Internet on education, or of social networking sites such as Facebook or MySpace? Yet given the relatively new state of the law, as the legal system struggles to keep pace with technological advances, the courts are reaching markedly different outcomes on the extent to which education officials can punish students who violate school rules, especially if their behavior originated out of school or involved First Amendment free speech claims.
In light of the legal and technological challenges facing school business officials (SBOs), school boards, and other education leaders, the first part of …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study examined the characteristics of a high school environment that former senior year dropouts were looking for when they returned to school to attain their diploma. A phenomenological qualitative design was used to identify the reasons seniors dropped out of school, the factors that influenced them to return, the characteristics of the high school environment they deemed most desirable, and the differences between the perceptions of African American and Caucasian students in their responses. Eight former senior year dropouts from one South Georgia school district participated in two individual student interviews and one focus group interview to determine these …

This Much I Know Is True: The Five Intangible Influences On Collective Bargaining, Nicholas Digiovanni
Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy
Studies of collective bargaining have often centered on technique, style and the economic data that each side can use in bargaining a labor contract. Often overlooked, however, are the more subtle factors that influence the outcome of a round of bargaining. This article will reflect upon five of those intangible influences, namely, 1) the role of history; 2) the setting of expectations; 3) the nature and character of the people in the process; 4) the aspects of timing in negotiations and 5) the element of catharsis. The author has noted these five factors in his long career at the bargaining …

Undergraduate Education White Papers
This proposal was presented via handouts and accompanying slides to the University of Kentucky Faculty Senate Council on February 20, 2012. The proposal hinges on two main purposes:
- an alternative for Kentucky's high school students that choose to accelerate their time to degree by completing a challenging course at UK; and,
- a strategic improvement to existing enrollments at UK by high school students that would lead to more long-term relationships and shorten time to a college degree from UK.
The proposal includes definitions of terms commonly used, a few examples from UK benchmark institutions and an example lifecycle for the …
