Rural Research Brief: The Four-Day School Week: Information And Recommendations, Andrea D. Beesley, Carmon Anderson Oct 2007

Rural Research Brief: The Four-Day School Week: Information And Recommendations, Andrea D. Beesley, Carmon Anderson

The Rural Educator

Within the past three decades, a number of schools and districts, particularly those in rural areas, have moved toward a four-day school week. Recent articles and reprots indicate that there are now schools with four-day weeks in Colorado, Wyoming, South Dakota, Louisiana, New Mexico, Idaho, and Nebraska. The reasons for this shift include saving money int he face of declining enrollments and avoiding interruptions and abscences due to sports and activities. Districts contemplating the four-day week need current information about this alternative schedule and how it is working in schools around the country. This report is intended to summarize recent …

The Essential Role Of Integrating Technology Content And Skills Into University Principal Preparation Programs, Kathy Dale, Robert Moody, Mike Slattery, Regi Wieland Oct 2007

The Essential Role Of Integrating Technology Content And Skills Into University Principal Preparation Programs, Kathy Dale, Robert Moody, Mike Slattery, Regi Wieland

The Rural Educator

"Just-in-time" delivery of goods and services was the call to action phrase of the 1990's, but in the 21st Century, just-in-time is too late. University leaders in principal preparation programs must not only respond to the call of the field, but also anticipate the needs even before school administrators recognize the content and skills necessary with which to lead. As building principals become increasingly accountable for integrating technology into instruction and infrastructure, principal preparation programs are more accountable to prepare principals to succeed in their leadership roles, acknowledge the impact of principals on student achievement and teacher performance, and accept …

Repositioning Research As Writing To Improve Student Learning, Sara Booth Oct 2007

Repositioning Research As Writing To Improve Student Learning, Sara Booth

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

In recent years teacher education has used the process and practices of research to improve pre-service teachers’ pedagogical practices. Pre-service teachers, however, generally prefer to understand the practices of teaching rather than research. This paper considers the writing process rather than the research process as central to the construction of pre-service teachers’ subjectivities. It explores the responses of twenty-six Tasmanian Secondary English postgraduate pre-service teachers in 2004 and 2005, drawing on data from research writing projects, surveys and interviews. These responses indicated that when writing is positioned central to the research process it can change pre-service teachers’ construction of research …

Curriculum Integration: A Trial, Pat Grant, Kathy Paige Oct 2007

Curriculum Integration: A Trial, Pat Grant, Kathy Paige

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Curriculum integration and working in teams are two key characteristics of middle schooling in Australia today. As part of a new primary/middle teacher education program an interdisciplinary team of academics has developed a course that aims to teach pre service teachers how to plan for and teach an integrated curriculum unit in an authentic context: their 6 week school placement. This paper will describe the first cycle of an action research project detailing the issues for the third year pre service teachers and for the staff involved in teaching the course as they come to grips with new ways of …

Digital Generation Pre-Service Teachers As Change Agents: A Paradox, Sharn Donnison Oct 2007

Digital Generation Pre-Service Teachers As Change Agents: A Paradox, Sharn Donnison

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

In this paper I examine the assumptions or ‘cultural models’ (Gee, 1992, p. 60) that 70 aspiring Digital Generation pre-service teachers in south-east Queensland have formed about themselves as future teachers. This paper is drawn from a larger study that focused on the cultural models and resulting discourses that these pre-service teachers expressed about the development of their future lives and careers. In this paper, I argue that these pre-service teachers possess conflicting cultural models about both themselves as teaching professionals and as social activists. While they profess to be educational and social change agents they also profess discourses of …

Turkish Pre-Service Teachers' Beliefs About The Importance Of Teaching Chemistry, Esen Uzuntiryaki, Yezdan Boz

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The purpose of this study was to describe Turkish pre-service chemistry teachers’ beliefs about the importance of teaching chemistry in high schools. For this purpose, 45 pre-service chemistry teachers were administered a questionnaire involving open-ended questions which asked what the importance of teaching chemistry is, and why we teach chemistry in high schools. Based on the written responses, 12 pre-service teachers were chosen to be interviewed to obtain more elaborated information about their beliefs. Data analysis revealed that most of the pre-service teachers expressed that chemistry should be taught in order to explain daily life events. However, a very small …

I Wonder Who's Using Us Now: Hurricane Katrina's Influence On Use Of Special Collections At The University Of New Orleans Library, Florence M. Jumonville

The Southeastern Librarian

On the afternoon of Friday, August 26, 2005, a student approached the reference desk at the University of New Orleans (UNO) library’s Louisiana and Special Collections Reading Room and returned the book from the UNO Faculty Authors Collection that he had been perusing. It was a routine transaction, and department personnel had no inkling that this one would be the last that their department would make for more than four months. Weatherwatchers, however, already were aware of the threat posed by Hurricane Katrina, which was then churning in the Gulf of Mexico. Television broadcasts that evening brought alarming forecasts which …

Popcorn N' Picture Books: Promoting Children's Books In Academic Libraries, Laurie Charnigo, Carley Suther Oct 2007

Popcorn N' Picture Books: Promoting Children's Books In Academic Libraries, Laurie Charnigo, Carley Suther

The Southeastern Librarian

The educational value of children’s literature is supported by a numerous body of research. Helping children to read, write, develop fluency, critical thinking skills and multicultural awareness are just a few of the essential benefits children’s books provide. During the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, children’s book publishing has risen from a small publishing venture to big business. About 2,000 books were published for children in 1960. By the nineties, this number increased to 5,000 and has continued to rise. The “voluminous body of high-quality literature” published yearly makes selection by librarians difficult. As Bernice Cullinan and Lee Galda note, “Our …

Wichita: A Diverse Adult Basic Education Program In An Urban Center, Margaret Harris Sep 2007

Wichita: A Diverse Adult Basic Education Program In An Urban Center, Margaret Harris

Educational Considerations

Wichita, incorporated in 1870 as a village, is the largest city in Kansas. It is the county seat of Sedgwick County, located at the junction of the Arkansas Rivers in south central Kansas. Westward expansion and financial rewards attracted the first White settlers to the area in the 1850s and 1860s looking to profit from hunting and trapping wildlife and to trade with the native American population, the Wichita Indians, who had moved north from Oklahoma and built a permanent settlement in 1863.

Writing For Comprehension, Randy Wallace, Cathy Pearman, Cindy Hail, Beth Hurst Sep 2007

Writing For Comprehension, Randy Wallace, Cathy Pearman, Cindy Hail, Beth Hurst

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Many educators continue to treat reading and writing as separate subjects. In response to this observation, the authors offer four research-based writing strategies that teachers can use to improve student reading comprehension through writing. The writing strategies—About/Point, Cubing, Four Square Graphic Organizer, and Read, Respond, Revisit, Discuss—reinforce reading comprehension by helping students strengthen their skills at summarizing, thinking in-depth from multiple perspectives, activating and organizing numerous thoughts, and creating interest through meaningful social interactions.

Family Literacy: The Missing Link To School-Wide Literacy Efforts, Vicky Zygouris-Coe Sep 2007

Family Literacy: The Missing Link To School-Wide Literacy Efforts, Vicky Zygouris-Coe

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Everyone has a literacy component to their lives. Family literacy refers to the ways people learn and use literacy in their home and everyday lives. Many times there is a disconnect between family and school literacies. Schools do not have systematic ways of tapping into the wealth of knowledge families possess and linking that knowledge to school literacy efforts. This article provides a brief review of family literacy issues and perspectives. Sample family literacy programs are summarized and suggestions are given for strengthening the link between family and school through food, photos, family publications, journals, literacy events, and using parents …

What’S New In Children’S Literature? Engaging Readers Through Series Books, Barbara A. Ward, Terrell A. Young Sep 2007

What’S New In Children’S Literature? Engaging Readers Through Series Books, Barbara A. Ward, Terrell A. Young

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Although experts may debate the literary value of series books and bemoan readers’ reluctance to move away from familiar characters and settings, the fact remains that they often draw reluctant readers to the printed word. There is no evidence that reading series books ruins the literary health or moral fiber of readers (Tunnell & Jacobs, 2008). In fact, the opposite may happen since series books often promotes reading in reluctant readers. Time spent searching for something to read can be shortened, and long hours can be filled profitably with series reading since readers already know the types of books for …
