Developing Young Authors: Collaborating In A Supportive Community, Carol L. Moutray, John F. Ennis
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
When a classroom provides an environment that promotes writing, students have the resources, time, and opportunity to create collaborative stories. In a third grade classroom, three girls unite to write a series of humorous stories through group negotiation and class prompting. The classroom's instructional design and its sharing, encouraging climate promoted writing.

Who's In Charge Here? Ownership Issues With Literature Study Guides, Marguerite Cogorno Radencich
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
This article presents a rationale and procedure for evaluating literature study guides based on Langer's model for literature study and Cambourne's conditions for learning. Guides for three books are then compared using the evaluation procedure. The evaluation of five publishers' guides shows great differences in treatments of the same books.

Staff Development In The V.E.T. Sector: Case Studies Of Two Providers, Erica Smith, Tom Lowrie
Staff Development In The V.E.T. Sector: Case Studies Of Two Providers, Erica Smith, Tom Lowrie
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This paper explores attitudes about and practices in staff development within two providers of' vocational education and training, focussing in particular on staff development in competency-based training (CBT). A general overview of staff development in the VET sector is provided, together with a brief discussion of the nature of CBT and an indication of some of the controversy which was associated with its introduction. Staff development in the two organisations is discussed in some detail, and it is suggested that some of the differences in staff development practices may be ascribed to variations in size and in organisational culture.
Changing Tafe In New Times, Clive Chappell
Changing Tafe In New Times, Clive Chappell
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Teachers and managers in Technical and Further Education have experienced radical changes to their work over the last decade. They have experienced the policy driven imperative of governments to insert the market form into the operations of the public sector including education. The policies of new vocationalism have not only changed the institution of TAFE but have placed different demands and different expectations on personnel working in this sector Debate over government reforms to VET has commonly revolved around problems to do with their implementation or have foregrounded issues to do with the professional competence of teachers in the new …

Which Components Of Instruction Influence Student Interest?, James A. Athanasou, Kathy Petoumenos
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This study investigated how subject interest is related to components of instruction, the nature of the subject and/or student factors. Students (N=524) from over 30 technical and further education colleges completed a survey on aspects of teaching and their interest in a subject. Student ratings of the 12 components of instruction and subject interest were uniformly positive. The overall average of the 12 questions on different aspects of teaching was 3.3 (ratings ranged from I to 4). This correlated 0.46 with the rating of subject interest. There was no significant effect of age, gender, being in the first or later …

Vocational Teacher Education In An Era Of Change: The United States Experience, Curtis R. Finch
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
The focus of more recent educational reform in the United States has been on student achievement. As educators began to work with new reform they quickly realized that success depended on the preparation of quality teachers. This article focuses on vocational teacher education which like other teacher education areas has for some time been involved with the educational reform movement in the United States. Historical and philosophical contexts for vocational teacher education are first presented, followed by a discussion of their impact on vocational teacher education and relationships to current reform. Portfolio Assessment In Vocational Education: The Assessor's View, Zita M. Wagner
Portfolio Assessment In Vocational Education: The Assessor's View, Zita M. Wagner
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Portfolio assessment has been traditionally used in art, design, music, writing and dance programs. However in recent years the use of portfolio assessment in vocational education has expanded to include many different subject areas such as economics, business, nursing, human resources, mathematics and engineering. As an assessment tool the portfolio has much to offer in terms of involving students in the assessment process and in documenting their achievements. From the assessor's point of view, the use of portfolios for assessment raises issues of reliability, the time consuming nature of assessment, objectivity and authenticity of the work. In this paper twentyfour …

Education And The Rural Middle Class: Limington Academy, 1848-1860, Lynne Benoit-Vashon
Education And The Rural Middle Class: Limington Academy, 1848-1860, Lynne Benoit-Vashon
Maine History
The founding of academies in Maine during the early nineteenth-century expanded educational options for rural families, but academies also played an important role in the development of a rural middle class. In her study of Limington Academy, Lynne Benoit-Vachon finds that the school's by-laws, curriculum, course materials, and extra-curricular activities all worked to inculcate middle-class values of hard work, sobriety, self-improvement, and self-reliance in the Academy's young charges - training which would lead many of them into middle-class occupations beyond Limington’s borders. Benoit-Vachon, a graduate of the University of Maine, works as Education Programs Coordinator at the Currier Gallery of …
The Misses Martin’S School For Young Ladies Portland, Maine, 1803-1834, Yvonne Souliere
The Misses Martin’S School For Young Ladies Portland, Maine, 1803-1834, Yvonne Souliere
Maine History
During the Early Republic, education for the daughters of Portland's elite families usually included “ornamental” subjects such as needlework, music, and painting in addition to the “useful” subjects of reading history, arithmetic, and geography. This curriculum mirrored that of fashionable schools for young ladies in New York, Philadelphia, and, of course, Boston. The “Misses Martin's School for Young Ladies, ” opened in 1803 by the English “gentlewoman” Penelope Martin, instructed girls in “useful” and “ornamental ”subjects while also offering Portland’s best families the added cache of sending their daughters to a British-style boarding school for training as “proper” young ladies. …

The purpose of this study was to examine a first-grade, rural school teacher's use of a newly adopted literature-based reading series. The goal was not only to see how she used the materials but to also examine any struggles she experienced during her first year with a literature-based series. The participant/observer spent one day a week for an entire school year observing the teacher's reading class and interviewing the teacher at regular intervals. It was apparent in the interviews that this teacher had a positive attitude toward many aspects of the new series and believed that she had changed her …

Using Narrative Picture Books To Build Awareness Of Expository Text Structure, Mary C. Mcmackin
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
For many students, reading in the content areas presents quite a challenge. The transition from an emphasis on narrative texts in the lower grades to expository texts in the upper grades is not always easy. This article describes a system I use for introducing expository text structure through the use of narrative picture books. My goal is to develop an understanding of expository text structure with simple texts so that students will be able to transfer these understandings to more cognitively dense content area materials.

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
This article describes a single instance of literacy learning involving the author and his two daughters, and provides a demonstration of how this literacy event can be unpacked both theoretically and practically in a way that a reflective practitioner could do. The aim of this article is to stimulate some reflective thinking and start some new conversations about what theoretical assumptions should drive reading instruction in the 21st century.
