Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This study examined the effects of assisted-repeated reading on four first grade students whose reading ability varied (a special education student, a non-classified poor reader, an English Language Learner (ELL) student, and a general education student) to determine if an assisted repeated reading intervention is differentially effective for students of differing academic profiles. The students engaged in assisted-repeated reading two times a week for eight weeks. Each session lasted 10 to 15 minutes. A baseline was established for each student prior to the start of the intervention. Subsequently, initial and final readings were recorded at each session. The findings of …

Outsiders-Within: Critical Race Theory, Graduate Education And Barriers To Professionalization, Carolann Daniel Mar 2007

Outsiders-Within: Critical Race Theory, Graduate Education And Barriers To Professionalization, Carolann Daniel

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This article uses the lens of critical race theory to examine the experiences of minority students in and outside of the social work education classroom. Research has not critically analyzed the structures, policies and practices of graduate education programs and how they influence the socialization experiences of students. Qualitative interviews with 15 African American and Latino students reveal that their experiences are often characterized by marginalization and conflict. They suggest that certain aspects of the professionalization process create and support forces that reproduce stratified social relations. These problematic relations have a negative impact on minority students threatening their persistence and …

Using Emerging Technologies To Serve The Underserved, Andree' Robinson-Neal Mar 2007

Using Emerging Technologies To Serve The Underserved, Andree' Robinson-Neal

Essays in Education

Community colleges in America developed out of a need to fill the gap between high school or technical education and university-level study. The two-year postsecondary experience which is typically offered at locations that are “community friendly” has attracted persons of color and those with more conservative economic means in ever-increasing numbers. Historically, these marginalized populations have experienced educational inequalities in larger numbers than other groups. As statistics show increasing enrollments from members of these groups, community colleges must provide and improve services that appropriately address both student need and societal demand. Students who are able to successfully obtain transfer to …

University’S Transformations: Episteme, Mission And Ethos In The Contemporary World, Martha Abrahão Saad Lucchesi, Eliana Branco Malanga

Essays in Education

The Cartesian principle was put forward by the philosopher as a strategy for research in greater depth. However, it turned out to be a way of understanding reality as if it were actually divided into disciplines. This segmented view of scientific knowledge clashes with the needs of today’s world, where communication is fast and allows for a quick exchange of information between producers of knowledge, making collaborative work easier, even at a distance. A significant increase in the production of scientific knowledge leads to a demand of new paradigms to understand reality. Transdisciplinarity does not invalidate disciplines, rather, by surpassing …

The Delphi Technique, Muhammad Imran Yousuf Mar 2007

The Delphi Technique, Muhammad Imran Yousuf

Essays in Education

The Delphi technique is a group process used to survey and collect the opinions of experts on a particular subject. Delphi may be characterized as a method for structuring a group communication process so that the process is effective in allowing a group of individuals, as a whole, to deal with a complex problem. It has application whenever policies, plans, or ideas have to be based on informed judgment. This technique is useful where the opinions and judgments of experts and practitioners are needed but time, distance, and other factors make it unlikely or impossible for the panel to work …

Handling Immediate Medical Care At Aquatic Facilities: Do We Need Different Levels Of Lifeguard Certification?, Leland Yarger Feb 2007

Handling Immediate Medical Care At Aquatic Facilities: Do We Need Different Levels Of Lifeguard Certification?, Leland Yarger

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The first-responder and professional-rescuer training materials and training programs consider lifeguards to be first responders in emergencies (Aehlert, 2005; American Red Cross, 2001). This article asks readers to consider whether our agency lifeguard-training programs reflect a philosophy that truly view and prepare lifeguards as first responders. If not, I challenge readers to consider whether we should alter our hiring, staffing, and in-service training procedures at aquatic facilities based on the scope and need for providing adequate emergency care at those facilities.

Postmodernism And Children’S Literature, Adel Atken Jan 2007

Postmodernism And Children’S Literature, Adel Atken

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

All four of my own children clamored for the Sesame Street book titled, The Monster at the End of This Book. On each double page spread, Grover begged them, “Please don’t turn the page because there’s a monster at the end of this book and I am so scared of monsters.” Of course, they loved to tease Grover, so they kept turning pages. The book ends with a smiling Grover, announcing, “I, furry, lovable old Grover am the monster at the end of this book and you were so scared” (Stone, 1971). Despite the silliness of the whole book, it …

Being And Becoming: The Heart Of Teacher Education, Bev Norsworthy Jan 2007

Being And Becoming: The Heart Of Teacher Education, Bev Norsworthy

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Teacher education is of critical concern to a nation’s well-being. Scripture clearly identifies that the predominant narratives in a nation’s education are directly linked to its citizen’s behaviour (e.g., see Psalm 78, Judges 2). Literature which claims that teacher education has little influence on beliefs that pre-service teachers bring to their initial teacher education may unnerve Christian teacher educators who seek to equip teachers to make a difference in the lives of children and parents in a nation (Berry, 2004; Fletcher, 1997; Hatton & Smith, 1995; Lowery, 2003). For example, Berry (2004, p. 1302) observes that:

There is little doubt …

Multicultural Considerations For Building Learning Communities, Cher N. Edwards, Scott Edwards Jan 2007

Multicultural Considerations For Building Learning Communities, Cher N. Edwards, Scott Edwards

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Educational policies call for inclusion and attention to cultural differences in our schools. Administrators, classroom educators, counselors, and other support staff attempt to attend to students through a cooperative effort of connecting with the community beyond the school building, as well as the families represented within it. As Christians, there is a higher calling to truly embrace those often underserved in our learning communities. This paper will address multicultural issues important for United States and United Kingdom school system staff to be mindful of when focusing on students and their families.

Preparing Teachers For Their Prophetic Role To Serve With Heart, Head, And Hands, Cindy Harvel, Martine Audeoud

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

As teacher preparation programs seek to diversify their pre-service teachers’ exposure to teaching situations, Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s Education Department has discovered how to maximize its freshman’s educational technology field experiences through meaningful cross-cultural community service. A plan has been implemented since the spring of 2004 where candidates taking educational technology classes are required to give 8 hours of technology tutoring as a community service to populations in cross-cultural situations. Based on the Spring 2004 successes, the cross-cultural tutoring opportunities have been expanded, leading to renewed vision in candidates’ perspectives on education and job placements. At a freshman level, this …

Book Review: William Jeynes. Religion, Education, And Academic Success, David W. Robinson Jan 2007

Book Review: William Jeynes. Religion, Education, And Academic Success, David W. Robinson

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

In this provocative work, Dr. William Jeynes of California State University at Long Beach addresses a vital educational question: is there a statistically verifiable relationship between religious belief and academic achievement? For the non- Christian, it is a question of the social utility of religion; does a demonstrable and significant correlation between a religious mindset and measurable academic outcomes exist? Or is a secular outlook equally capable of superior educational success? For the Christian thinker, it is a question of the relationship between the root of faith and the fruit of the “strong mind” (II Tim. 1:7) promised in the …
