Currents Of Consumption: How National Narratives Of Japanese Cuisine Collide With Localized Forms Of Sushi In Northern California, John Ostermiller
Currents Of Consumption: How National Narratives Of Japanese Cuisine Collide With Localized Forms Of Sushi In Northern California, John Ostermiller
Master's Projects and Capstones
This paper examines how national narratives of Japanese cuisine collide with the expectations, preferences, and perceptions of American consumers (particularly Northern California). The global economy has benefited the circulation of positive images of Japan managed by the Japanese government, but the commercialization of Japanese cuisine is also at odds with government efforts. In Japan, sushi is often synonymous with nigirizushi: sliced seafood and a daub of wasabi atop vinegared rice. As part of Japan’s washoku tradition, this singular image of sushi (allegedly) reflects the deepest essence of Japanese cultural sensibilities tied to simplicity, perfection, and nature. But in America, consumers’ …

Tween Tourists: Children And Decision-Making., Bodil Stilling Blichfeldt, Bettina Pederson, Anders Johansen, Line Hansen
Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice
Research suggests that children influence family vacation decision-making. However, with few exceptions parents act as respondents in studies of family vacation decision-making and furthermore, children’s role is often defined as a rather passive one. Thus, it is often assumed that although children might explicate wishes pertaining to holidays, they generally submit to whatever choices their parents make. In recent years, marketing researchers have taken a keen interest in the so-called ‘tweens’, people who are 8 to 12 years old and in between childhood and the teenage years. One key finding of research on tweens is that tweens are consumers in …
Collective Strategies For Rural Tourism: The Experience Of Networks In Spain., Ana Isabel Polo, Dolores Frias
Collective Strategies For Rural Tourism: The Experience Of Networks In Spain., Ana Isabel Polo, Dolores Frias
Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice
Rural tourism is an increasingly important activity for the European economy. Rural tourism development is complex, considering the wide variety of companies, agents and resources to be jointly managed, the objectives of each participating company, but also to broader objectives relating to the development and conservation of resources in the rural tourist destination. The aim of this paper is to provide a better understanding about the effects of networks as a strategy for improving the development of the rural tourism sector. An in-depth study of networked firms representing a rural tourism consolidated destination found that actions undertaken by networks contributes …
Managing Wine Tourism In Italy., Angelo Presenza, Antonio Minguzzi, Clara Petrillo
Managing Wine Tourism In Italy., Angelo Presenza, Antonio Minguzzi, Clara Petrillo
Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice
At the global level, the phenomenon of wine tourism is growing and is considered to be a driver for the economic and social development of many rural areas. These areas, although not traditionally characterised by a centuries -old tradition in the wine industry, are now playing an increasingly role in the current competitive scenario. One of the main development strategies implemented by wine producers is diversification in sectors either supporting the tourism sector or co-related to it (Winemakers Federation of Australia, 1998). This paper analyses specific forms of wine tourism development and specific impacts caused by wine-related tourism. This paper …

Is Wellington Environmentally Friendly? Visitors’ Views Of New Zealand’S Capital, Abel Duarte Alonso
Is Wellington Environmentally Friendly? Visitors’ Views Of New Zealand’S Capital, Abel Duarte Alonso
Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice
For nearly a decade, New Zealand has been using nature related slogans to market the country’s rural environment, or pollution-free image. The constant growth of overseas visitor numbers illustrates that such campaigns appear to be successful. However, limited discussion is provided in contemporary research on visitors’ views about environmental issues in New Zealand, and particularly in its capital Wellington. This study examines this dimension from the perspective of 353 visitors travelling to (pre-visit) and from Wellington (post-visit); these respondents completed a questionnaire distributed during August and September of 2006. In this study, comparisons are made between pre- and post visit, …
Engaging Auschwitz: An Analysis Of Young Travellers’ Experiences Of Holocaust Tourism, Thomas P. Thurnell-Read
Engaging Auschwitz: An Analysis Of Young Travellers’ Experiences Of Holocaust Tourism, Thomas P. Thurnell-Read
Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice
This article considers the experiences of young travellers visiting the site of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Poland. Semi-structured interviews were used to generate qualitative data on the way individuals approach, engage with and interpret their experience of visiting Auschwitz. In analysing findings from interviews, this paper focuses first on the various motivational factors that initiate individuals" visit and, further, the manner in which individuals seek to actively engage with the site. The latter is seen to draw on imaginative devices, employed by young travellers to feel a greater connection to the site. The influence of historical, pedagogical and cinematic …

‘Non Vedete. È Un Rivoluzione.’ [You Don’T See. It’S A Revolution] Edward Lear Landscape Painter And Italy, Kathryn Walchester
Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice
Edward Lear's 1852 text Journals of a Landscape Painter in Southern Calabria and the Kingdom of Naples details the author's painting tours in the South of Italy during one of its periods of major political and social upheaval. The text was based on his journeys in Southern Calabria in the summer of 1847 and Basilicata in the autumn of the same year. In his travel writing, Lear attempts, through a rhetoric of the „picturesque, to construct an Italian refuge for himself; one which is static and silently „picture-like. This article considers the tensions and negotiations in this text between Lear's …

Innovation, Culture And The Path To Postmodernism: Finland Vs. Denmark, Jayme Harlander
Innovation, Culture And The Path To Postmodernism: Finland Vs. Denmark, Jayme Harlander
All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019
The purpose of this study is to explore the concept of postmodernism as it applies to the innovative process as carried out in the 21st century. In doing so, this study compares and contrasts two countries within a region of the world with differing innovative capacities and then link these differences to their different engagements with the forces that characterize what scholars have terms “postmodernism”. From this study we find that countries that are more closely engaged with these postmodernist forces thrive as 21st century innovators; those that are less engaged –i.e., have trouble transitioning from the old “modernist” ethos—falter …
Narrating Religion For Tourists: Tourist Guidebooks’ Depictions Of Ganden Sumtseling Monastery In Xianggelila County, Yunnan, Emmelie Korell
Narrating Religion For Tourists: Tourist Guidebooks’ Depictions Of Ganden Sumtseling Monastery In Xianggelila County, Yunnan, Emmelie Korell
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Located in recently renamed Xianggelila County in north-western Yunnan in the People’s Republic of China, Ganden Sumtseling Monastery constitutes a highlight for any visiting tourist. Originally erected in 1679 to reflect the significance of Tibetan Buddhism in the region, it now contributes to the tourism-generated income earned by the County. Religion has become a factor in tourism: as motivation, as a resource or even as a concept to describe the practices of tourism itself (Graburn, 2001; Oakes and Sutton, 2010; Strausberg, 2011). The question posed in this paper asks how religion is narrated in travel literature. Specifically: what story does …
Western Travellers In The Land Of The Buddha Legitimising Travel Through The Religionification Of Tourism, François Thibeault
Western Travellers In The Land Of The Buddha Legitimising Travel Through The Religionification Of Tourism, François Thibeault
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
On the one hand, tourism has developed to such a point that it now shapes other social realities in global society. On the other hand, pilgrimage phenomena are thriving in the twenty-first century, as they become both more globalised and more particularised. This paper shows that drawing oppositions between pilgrimage and tourism assumes an exclusive, dichotomous view that is misleading. Instead, I insist on an understanding of the reciprocal influence between religion and tourism in which neither of the two spheres subjects itself to the other. The argument is based on the understandings and discourses of legitimation that Westerners travelling …
Of Temples And Trees: The Black Dragon King And The Arbortourists, Adam Yuet Chau
Of Temples And Trees: The Black Dragon King And The Arbortourists, Adam Yuet Chau
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
The intersection of tourism and religion as two more or less coherent systems of political-economic and symbolic-conceptual productions is premised on a crucial conceptual and physical domain, i.e. the sites themselves that are being visited by the tourists and pilgrims. What unites tourists, pilgrims and local worshippers is the act of visiting sites, which suggests that we might wish to call them by a unified term: site visitors. And their practice can be called site visiting. Using materials collected in the mid-1990s in rural north-central China (Shaanbei, northern Shaanxi Province), supplemented with more recent documentary materials, I shall show how …
Governance And Management Of Religious Tourism In India, Kiran Shinde
Governance And Management Of Religious Tourism In India, Kiran Shinde
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Religious tourism constitutes the dominant form of tourism in India and yet little is known about how it is governed and managed. This paper aims to contribute to a better understanding of governance and management of religious tourism. It first provides an overview of policy framework and governance mechanisms that are relevant for religious tourism. Then a market profile is presented to examine how the religious tourism economy intersects with the state-apparatus of policies and institutions. To better explain the complexities of religious tourism, the paper employs the axis of formal-informal economy: the informal end is where the religious tourism …
India’S Buddhist Circuit(S): A Growing Investment Market For A “Rising” Asia, David Geary
India’S Buddhist Circuit(S): A Growing Investment Market For A “Rising” Asia, David Geary
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
With the growing economic rise of Asia most of the international spotlight has focused on the rapid growth and industrialisation spearheaded by China and India, with little attention on the role of India’s robust religious tourism market that remains a vital part of its economic growth. In recent years, the development and promotion of religious circuits has become a cornerstone of India’s tourism marketing campaign that aims to capture both domestic and foreign exchange earnings. To explore the relationship between tourism and India’s religious circuits further, this article examines the role of India’s Buddhist circuit and how a series of …
When Sacred Space Becomes A Heritage Place: Pilgrimage, Worship, And Tourism In Contemporary China, R J. Shepherd
When Sacred Space Becomes A Heritage Place: Pilgrimage, Worship, And Tourism In Contemporary China, R J. Shepherd
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
When promoted at sites that have traditionally been religious in character, heritage tourism evokes questions of intentionality, commodification, and authenticity. In particular, tourism at such sites is alleged to flatten out local practices, cause social problems, and commercialise the sacred. In short, local cultural practices are presumed to be transformed for the worse by tourism, a presumption which implies the existence of pristine pre-tourist cultures which can serve as baseline tools for measuring the impact of this touristic degradation. In this paper I address these concerns by examining tourism at a particular Chinese religious site, recently designated as a national …
At The Confluence Of Leisure And Devotion: Hindu Pilgrimage And Domestic Tourism In India, Knut Aukland
At The Confluence Of Leisure And Devotion: Hindu Pilgrimage And Domestic Tourism In India, Knut Aukland
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
In this article I draw on a wide range of studies including my own field research to provide a bird’s-eye perspective of the various points of connection, confluence and overlap between Hindu pilgrimage and domestic tourism in contemporary India. This serves three aims. First, it presents an overview of the contemporary scene in India which lends itself to comparison. Second, it illustrates the ways in which a pilgrimage tradition can be explored via tourism, as opposed to something contrasted with tourism. Thus, I hope to demonstrate the many potential research avenues beyond asking who is a pilgrim and who is …
Pilgrimage-Tourism: Common Themes In Different Religions, Noga Collins-Kreiner
Pilgrimage-Tourism: Common Themes In Different Religions, Noga Collins-Kreiner
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
The paper discusses common themes in different religions regarding pilgrimage-tourism and has four main goals. First, it shows that the boundaries between pilgrimage and tourism have become blurred. Second, it characterises the different changes that have taken place in pilgrimage research in recent years. Third, it re-examines three different pilgrimage case-studies in an effort to draw conclusions pertaining to the ‘pilgrimagetourism nexus’; and fourth, it highlights discrepancies between the ‘old’ paradigm, predicated on the assumption that religious elements lie at the core of pilgrimage, and the results of more recent research on secular models of travel, highlighting alternative and complementary …
Introduction: On Dragons And Elephants: Religion In Domestic And International Tourism In China And India, Michael Stausberg, Knut Aukland
Introduction: On Dragons And Elephants: Religion In Domestic And International Tourism In China And India, Michael Stausberg, Knut Aukland
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
This introductory essay explores some of the commonalities and differences that emerge from reading this thematic issue on religion and tourism in China and India. Economic growth has led to an explosion in domestic tourism activity in both countries, and the respective states are deeply involved in this development. The Indian state sees tourism as a means to create jobs, revenue and regional development. While this is also true for the Chinese state, it further treats tourism as a means to control and manage religion. In both countries, official tourism development can lead to complete makeovers of particular sites as …

Exploring The Role Of Irish Local Authorities In Tourism Development: A Senior Management Perspective On Tourism Development In Cork County Council, Monica Moisuc
Masters
In an Irish context, the government's engagement in tourism and its role in developing the sector is acknowledged across most Irish government publications. However, despite efforts made to highlight the major role of the government in tourism, the number of studies that seek to understand how Irish local governments are engaging in tourism is limited. In an attempt to fill this knowledge gap, this study brings a new contribution to the current relevant literature by exploring the role of the government in developing tourism within a local Irish context.
Using a qualitative case-study approach, the particular entity under investigation is …
Progressive Commemoration: Public Statues Of Historical Women In Urban American Cities, Melanie D. Chin
Progressive Commemoration: Public Statues Of Historical Women In Urban American Cities, Melanie D. Chin
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Women who made notable accomplishments are underrepresented in commemoration. Some American cities have brought women to the forefront of becoming visible through commemoration in statues. This thesis compares the commemoration of historical women in four different American cities. Stakeholders hold the key to implementing and changing public policy to increase the visibility of women and people of color in public monuments. Cities which lack representation of women and people of color may learn from and follow the efforts of a leading city to achieve lasting and effective change in representing those who historically been underrepresented.
Buying Time: Consuming Urban Pasts In Nineteenth-Century Britain, Dory Agazarian
Buying Time: Consuming Urban Pasts In Nineteenth-Century Britain, Dory Agazarian
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation is about how historical narratives developed in the context of a modern marketplace in nineteenth-century Britain. In particular, it explores British historicism through urban space with a focus on Rome and London. Both cities were invested with complex political, religious and cultural meanings central to the British imagination. These were favorite tourist destinations and the subjects of popular and professional history writing. Both cities operated as palimpsests, offering a variety of histories to be “tried on” across the span of time. In Rome, British consumers struggled when traditional histories were problematized by emerging scholarship and archaeology. In London, …

Big-Game and Trophy Hunting Collection
Trophy hunting has occupied a prominent position in recent scholarly literature and popular media. In the scientific conservation literature, researchers are generally supportive of or sympathetic to its usage as a source of monetary support for conservation. Although authors at times acknowledge that trophy hunting faces strong opposition from many members of the public, often for unspecified reasons associated with ethics, neither the nature nor the implications of these ethical concerns have been substantively addressed. We identify the central act of wildlife “trophy” taking as a potential source of ethical discomfort and public opposition. We highlight that trophy hunting entails …

“Project Sidewalk” is an existing research effort that focuses on mapping accessibility issues for handicapped persons to efficiently plan wheelchair and mobile scooter friendly routes around Washington D.C. As supporters of this project, we utilized the data “Project Sidewalk” collected and used it to confirm predictions about where problem sidewalks exist based on real estate and crime data. We present a study that identifies correlations found between accessibility data and crime and housing statistics in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. We identify the key reasons for increased accessibility and the issues with the current infrastructure management system. After a thorough …
