The Impact Of Fees On Visitation Of National Parks, Zvi Schwartz, Li-Chun Lin Dec 2006

The Impact Of Fees On Visitation Of National Parks, Zvi Schwartz, Li-Chun Lin

Department of Hospitality and Tourism Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This study assesses the impact of the change in revenue management policy (namely the increased public land recreation fees) on the number of domestic and international travelers that visit the large, mostly well-known US National Park System sites. Baseline, multivariate demand models were developed based on secondary data from 10 years prior to the fee policy change, and were used to predict demand in years following the fee change. The predictions of the baseline demand models were then compared to the sites' actual visitation. The differences between the actual and the predicted visitation are statistically significant, indicating that the change …

Market Valuation Of Convertible Securities Of U.S. Airlines, Kseniya P. Beltsova Nov 2006

Market Valuation Of Convertible Securities Of U.S. Airlines, Kseniya P. Beltsova

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The airlines have enormous needs for capital. Historically, capital spending was accountable for about 15 percent of annual airline revenues, more than double the average for manufacturing companies (Arpey, 1995). Access to capital is essential to the long-term viability and growth of the airline industry especially due to the capital-intensive nature of its business. However, highly cyclical nature of the airline business and its severe dependence on general economic condition make investments in the industry risky and uncertain. The airline's junk bond credit rating and enormous amounts of debt result in extremely high costs of capital. In addition, the airlines …

South Kingstown Ri: New Zoning For An Historic Mill, Maggie Jones, Richard Barringer

Planning

The village of Peace Dale in the town of South Kingstown, Rhode Island, developed around several mills that commenced operations in the 1800s. One mill, known as the Palisades, is still partially active and in excellent condition, but much of its square footage is unutilized. A citizens’ group of artists and business people joined with the mill owners and the town of South Kingstown to develop new zoning regulations to make more flexible the permitted uses for the mill site. The proposed zoning will allow the mill complex to feature a mix of retail, residential, and manufacturing uses, while preserving …

Changing Maine, 1960-2010: Teaching Guide, Richard Barringer, New England Environmental Finance Center Jul 2006

Changing Maine, 1960-2010: Teaching Guide, Richard Barringer, New England Environmental Finance Center

Maine History & Policy Development

Unlike forty years ago, none of us is now certain what the future holds for Maine – except that it will be different. Maine has been transformed by the events of the recent decades. We have come into a new world, a new time – a new historical era, if you will. This new era, like previous eras in Maine history, will require of us new ways of thinking, new ways of understanding, new ways of organizing ourselves as a community of people, if the values and culture we share and cherish are to endure and flourish.

Amherst Ma: A New Village Plan For Atkins Corner, Maggie Jones, Richard Barringer

Planning

The case study describes a successful smart growth initiative in the town of Amherst, Massachusetts, at an intersection known as Atkins Corner. The initiative grew from two motivating factors: the necessity of realigning Route 116, a major north-to-south artery through the town, to decrease traffic accidents at the intersection and improve pedestrian safety; and a desire on the part of Hampshire College and the Town to create a village center at the intersection. Through a consensus-building process involving key town officials, Hampshire College, neighbors, and the design firm of Dodson Associates, agreement on the project was reached with local stakeholders …

This article traces the biography of the culinary entrepreneur from his early years in Bowling Green to his successful publishing ventures, and finally to the phenomenal marketing strategy that was used to create one of America’s most enduring and endearing brands.

A Content Analysis Of Costa Rican Ecolodge Websites, Michelle Millar, Gail Sammons

Hospitality Management

The purpose of this study is to analyze the websites of a randomly selected group of Costa Rican ecolodges to determine how they are using their websites to market on the Internet. The study addresses the question of whether or not the ecolodges are using their websites to promote themselves as ecolodges, and if in fact they also promote ecotourism. Ecolodges are an important component of ecotourism and the success of ecotourism may depend on the success of the ecolodge. In the past, however, due to their remote location, it has been difficult for ecolodge owners to promote their ecolodges. …

Assessing The Web-Based Destination Marketing Activities: A Relationship Marketing Perspective, Liza Cobos Jan 2006

Assessing The Web-Based Destination Marketing Activities: A Relationship Marketing Perspective, Liza Cobos

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Innovations in information technology have played an important role in the way business is conducted. Technology innovations have great impact on tourism destination marketing organizations such as convention and visitor bureaus, since they are highly dependent on information and timely distribution of it to the public. Information technology innovations such as the Internet allow CVBs to perform their marketing functions in a more efficient manner. The implementation of web-based marketing functions is impacted by organizational characteristics that either foster or hinder their implementation (Thong, 1999; Tornatzky & Fleischer, 1990; Wang & Fesenmaier, 2006; Zhu & Kraemer, 2005). Information technology innovations …

Tourism Stakeholders Envision A Sustainable Path: Strengthening Maine's No. 1 Industry Through The Blaine House Conference Recommendations, Elizabeth Munding Jan 2006

Tourism Stakeholders Envision A Sustainable Path: Strengthening Maine's No. 1 Industry Through The Blaine House Conference Recommendations, Elizabeth Munding

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Tourism, as Maine’s No. 1 industry, draws approximately 44 million visitors annually who spend $6 billion and contribute $340 million in sales tax. Despite these figures, annual statistics show zero growth or, often, loss, with the exception of the outdoor recreation sector. The tourism industry, made of government bodies, recreation associations and individual businesses, depends on the health of the natural resources and the compliance of related players, such as landowners. Discontent exists with the state and the industry’s leadership. The quandary comes in determining which actions to take to improve the state’s existing nature-based tourism into a sustainable industry …

Event Planners' Ratings Of Destination Selection Variables: A Comparison Between Members Of Three Professional Association Groups, Marta Godlewska Jan 2006

Event Planners' Ratings Of Destination Selection Variables: A Comparison Between Members Of Three Professional Association Groups, Marta Godlewska

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Several researchers have attempted to understand the destination selection criteria that are important to event planners (Crouch & Ritchie, 1998; Getz, 2003; Oppermann, 1996). However, an examination of the previous studies indicated that only limited understanding of the destination selection criteria has been provided. There is little research that compares event planners belonging to different professional associations and their rating of destination selection criteria. This study examined the differences that exist between three groups of event planners in rating thirteen destination selection variables. The study provides more understanding in the search of an optimal combination of destination selection mix based …

Maine’S State Parks: Their Value To Visitors And Contribution To The State Economy, Robert Roper, Charles E. Morris, Thomas Allen, Cindy Bastey Jan 2006

Maine’S State Parks: Their Value To Visitors And Contribution To The State Economy, Robert Roper, Charles E. Morris, Thomas Allen, Cindy Bastey

Maine Policy Review

Maine’s state parks are important to the social and economic well-being of the state, and provide public access to a variety of outdoor activities. In the study reported here, the authors find that visitors have a high level of satisfaction in Maine’s day-use parks, campgrounds and historic sites. Moreover, the overall impact of visitor-related park spending exceeds $30 million in income and 1,449 jobs annually. Nonetheless, the majority of Maine’s state parks suffer from long-deferred maintenance and are in immediate need of major capital improvements if they are to continue their vital role in supporting tourism and outdoor recreation.
