The challenge for the future will be ensuring greater harmonization of the protection for SME and at the same time, also for trademark. Pilot Study Of 8 Smes In Pakistan, Ejaz Mian

Business Review

These cases study small firms (with 1-50 employees) in Pakistan to determine marketing factors that lead to success. Information is gathered through in-depth interviews with owner-managers on their premises. Convenience sampling is used within the city of Karachi. Firms included relate to production, and services (including retail). It was found that most of the firms are not marketing oriented and they do not understand marketing. Thus they will benefit from some kind of marketing training conducted by the government or through their own resources.

A Long Spell Of Uncertainity, John Austin, Chris Decker, Tom Doering, Ernie Goss, Bruce Johnson, Lisa Johnson, Ken Lemke, Franz Schwarz, Scott Strain, Eric Thompson, Keith Turner

Business in Nebraska

We find ourselves in a period of sustained economic uncertainty. Today, like 6 months ago, the U.S. economy is on the brink of a recession. Weakness in lending activity, coupled with weakness in the housing sector and related manufacturing industries has stymied economic growth since late 2007. At times, recession seems imminent. But, the official measures, such as quarterly gross domestic product, do not clearly signal that the economy is contracting. Further, prices are rising rapidly for food and energy. That is the uncertainty. Will 2008 be remembered as a recession year, or as a period of disappointing but slow …

Operation And Technology Roadmapping Gives Singapore Smes A Strategic Edge, Knowledge@Smu May 2008

Operation And Technology Roadmapping Gives Singapore Smes A Strategic Edge, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

In today’s increasingly globalised, knowledge-based marketplace, a company’s ability to exploit innovation and technology is fundamental to sustaining growth and staying ahead of the competition. To help local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) move up the value-chain, Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) runs the Operation and Technology Roadmapping (OTR) initiative. Michael Ferrill, who cofounded the programme, spoke on OTR and knowledge transfer at the Fourth International Research Conference on Asian Business held in March 2008 at the Singapore Management University.

Brunswick Me: De-Militarizing The Bnas, Anne Holland, Brett Richardson, Richard Barringer May 2008

Brunswick Me: De-Militarizing The Bnas, Anne Holland, Brett Richardson, Richard Barringer

Planning

Closure of the Brunswick Naval Air Station in 2011 will have profound economic impacts on the entire mid-coast Maine region of Maine, with an estimated loss of 6,500 jobs and $330 million annual income. Throughout the Base Realignment and Closure process, Brunswick, the region, and the State of Maine followed federal rules and developed the federally-funded Brunswick Local Redevelopment Authority (BLRA) to plan for reuse of the 3300 acre base. In its planning process, the BLRA adhered to a number of well thought-out Guiding Principles, including the use of extensive public participation and the consideration of “smart growth” principles and …

Non-Farm Proprietors And The Nebraska Economy, 1997–2006, Randy Cantrell May 2008

Non-Farm Proprietors And The Nebraska Economy, 1997–2006, Randy Cantrell

Business in Nebraska

Non-farm proprietors are of growing importance in the Nebraska economy. This paper utilizes recently released data from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) to further explore this important class of workers, and to identify trends in their distribution and impact across Nebraska’s 93 counties. These data demonstrate that growth in non-farm proprietor jobs has not been matched by growth in income for those jobs, and that the discrepancy between jobs and income is most pronounced in rural portions of the state.

Evaluating Roads As Investments: A Primer On Benefit-Cost And Economic-Impact Analysis, Eric Thompson, David Rosenbaum, Arthur Hall Apr 2008

Evaluating Roads As Investments: A Primer On Benefit-Cost And Economic-Impact Analysis, Eric Thompson, David Rosenbaum, Arthur Hall

Bureau of Business Research Publications

Kansas and neighboring states spend billions of dollars on roads. Do the huge expenditures represent good investments? The taxpaying public will never know because public decision makers rarely analyze road projects as investments. A disciplined use of benefit-cost analysis can close this knowledge gap.

Roadways constitute an economically vital form of transportation infrastructure that have the potential to contribute to the productivity and economic growth of state economies—if the economic benefits of the roadways exceed their cost. Benefit-cost analysis totals the annual user benefits derived from road projects and compares these benefits with the total costs related to construction. The …

Integration Of Market And Entrepreneurial Orientations; And Their Impact On Export Performance: A Contingency Approach, Ayse Nilgun Kaya Apr 2008

Integration Of Market And Entrepreneurial Orientations; And Their Impact On Export Performance: A Contingency Approach, Ayse Nilgun Kaya

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

Globalization has promoted worldwide exporting levels to soar and to account for more than 10% of global activity. Technological advances in information and communication technologies, production methods, transportation, and international logistics have led to the increase in the exporting activity. However, these advances have also resulted in highly competitive and turbulent markets, and sophisticated and demanding customers, which in return has required exporting firms to be both entrepreneurial- and market-oriented.

A review of the market orientation, entrepreneurial orientation and exporting literature revealed three gaps that the dissertation sought to fill. First, the relationship between market orientation and entrepreneurship was not …

Entrepreneurs On Horseback: Reflections On The Organization Of Law, Darian M. Ibrahim, D. Gordon Smith Apr 2008

Entrepreneurs On Horseback: Reflections On The Organization Of Law, Darian M. Ibrahim, D. Gordon Smith

Faculty Publications

“Law and entrepreneurship” is an emerging field of study. Skeptics might wonder whether law and entrepreneurship is a variant of that old canard, the Law of the Horse. In this Essay, we defend law and entrepreneurship against that charge and urge legal scholars to become even more engaged in the wide-ranging scholarly discourse regarding entrepreneurship. In making our case, we argue that research at the intersection of entrepreneurship and law is distinctive. In some instances, legal rules and practices are tailored to the entrepreneurial context, and in other instances, general rules of law find novel expression in the entrepreneurial context. …

Community-Based Income Generation: A Case Study Of Its Effects And Replicability In Urucureá, Santarém, Lucy Midelfort

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This study examines the method of income generation through handcraft production used by Projeto Saude e Alegria, or the Health and Happiness Project, in Urucureá, a small community in the region of Santarém, Pará, Brazil. Urucureá is a rural community of ribeirinhos (or caboclos), traditional populations living along the banks of the Amazon River and its tributaries. The project of organizing community-based handcraft production in the community began in 1995, and since then the TucumArte group has been quite successful in strengthening their production of woven basketry from the straw of tucumã, a locally abundant species of palm tree. This …

Omaha Area Projections To 2050 The 2007 Update Final Report, Eric Thompson, Christopher Decker, Roger Riefler, Pavel Jeutang Mar 2008

Omaha Area Projections To 2050 The 2007 Update Final Report, Eric Thompson, Christopher Decker, Roger Riefler, Pavel Jeutang

Bureau of Business Research Publications

The Omaha area is in a period of sustained expansion. Population, employment, housing stock, and commercial and industrial space are growing together both in the City of Omaha and in surrounding communities and counties. This pattern of growth is likely to continue over the next few decades, but the pace and nature of growth is in question. In particular, it is unclear whether growth in the Omaha area will accelerate from its current pace, or moderate. Also in question is the degree to which growth will occur in core counties like Douglas and Sarpy or suburban and exurban areas of …

A Tale Of Two Ngos: Bangladesh’S Grameen Bank And Brac, Knowledge@Smu Feb 2008

A Tale Of Two Ngos: Bangladesh’S Grameen Bank And Brac, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

How has Bangladesh managed to outperform other low-income countries by doubling per capita GDP growth from 1.6% in the 1980s to 3.3% in the 1990s and beyond? The World Bank cites several key factors including an active civil society and strong partnerships forged by the government with NGOs. Two visionary NGO leaders, Nobel Peace Laureate, Muhammad Yunus (founder of Grameen Bank), and Fazle Hasan Abed (founder and chairman of BRAC), co-winner of the 2007 Clinton Global Citizen Award, visited Singapore in August and Sept 2007 to deliver two lectures on their respective organisations.

Innovations In Philanthropy: The Rockefeller Foundation’S Perspective, Knowledge@Smu

For nearly 100 years, the mission of the Rockefeller Foundation, “to promote the well-being of humanity by addressing the root causes of serious problems”, has remained the same, even as the foundation continues to adapt its programmes to changing social, economic and cultural needs. It is also a leading proponent of innovation and change in the field of philanthropy itself. Jacqueline Khor, Associate Director, Rockefeller Foundation, delivered a lecture on new trends in philanthropy and the emergence of a new generation of “philanthro-capitalists” at a lecture organised by the Singapore Management University’s Lien Foundation Centre for Social Innovation.
