In Kenya, a 2013 presidential directive reserved 30% of government procurement opportunities for enterprises owned by women, youth, and persons with disabilities to promote economic empowerment; however, as of 2016, female entrepreneurs continued to be outpaced by their male counterparts. Faculty Publications

Principles textbooks have improved in incorporating entrepreneurship intheory. However, they still generally lack simple demonstrations of theentrepreneurial input, particularly when teaching the theory of a normal rateof return. Many texts are unclear over the definition of a normal return andits constituent parts. Our paper (1) reviews the theory of the entrepreneurialinput; (2) sorts how popular textbooks calculate a normal rate of returnconsistent with their definition of the entrepreneurial input; and (3)provides a simple numerical example that incorporates the entrepreneurialinput, which can be more fully developed in intermediate texts.

Since the incremental wage hikes were first signed into law in 2015, data and anecdotal evidence has shown business owners have been able to make it work and many of critics' concerns that the higher labor costs would lead to disemployment have been misplaced. The story provides an in-depth analysis of how restaurant and food establishments, health care and retail employers have adapted to higher labor costs by innovating their …

Entrepreneurship And The Effects Of Nature And Nurture, Adam Guillory Dec 2018

Entrepreneurship And The Effects Of Nature And Nurture, Adam Guillory

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This paper provides a systematic review of studies and opinions on the debate over whether entrepreneurs are born or made. Attention has been paid to reducing bias and locating as many credible sources as possible. Unfortunately, peer reviewed, quantitative studies and data on this topic seem to be lacking. Research on whether or not secondary, formal education is required in entrepreneurship and if so, the effects are also analyzed. After much review, information on both sides of the argument seems to be well founded and evenly split. An audience polled before and after an argument on the subject was also …

Should Donation Ads Include Happy Victim Images? The Moderating Role Of Regulatory Focus, Yael Zemack-Rugar, Sona Klucarova Nov 2018

Should Donation Ads Include Happy Victim Images? The Moderating Role Of Regulatory Focus, Yael Zemack-Rugar, Sona Klucarova

Marketing & Entrepreneurship Faculty Publications

We examine how victim imagery interacts with ad messaging’s regulatory focus to determine the effectiveness of donation appeals. We predict and show that ads that combine a happy victim image with a promotion-focused message uniquely increase donation intentions. We demonstrate that this occurs because the combination of promotion-focused messaging, which makes gain goals salient, and a happy victim image, which signals gains are occurring, increases consumers’ perceived response efficacy. Four studies test the interaction of victim imagery and regulatory focus showing the predicted effect. We also test the mediating role of perceived response efficacy and rule out several alternative explanations. …

Exiting a business is a complicated process which includes among other things, the evaluation, preparation, marketing, and ultimate …

New Partnering Opportunities For The Nonprofit Sector, Kathleen M. Wilburn, H. Ralph Wilburn Nov 2018

New Partnering Opportunities For The Nonprofit Sector, Kathleen M. Wilburn, H. Ralph Wilburn

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

Consumers are demanding that corporations practice social responsibility. In order to meet this demand and keep their activist stockholders satisfied that they are still focused on profit and dividends, many corporations have established foundations that operate separately from the company. The foundations provide grants to nonprofits that can help the corporations fulfill their social responsibility, but, unlike prior philanthropic programs, these grants are based on developing partnerships with nonprofits that share the corporations’ social mission. There is also a group of smaller companies that nonprofits can partner with, the Benefit Corporation, as well as a new certification called the B …

A Model For Better Social Project Management, Brenda Massetti Nov 2018

A Model For Better Social Project Management, Brenda Massetti

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

With environmental degradation and other social ills on the rise, demand for businesses to perform social action is growing (Robertson, 2014). Yet, most Commercial enterprises take a diminutive view of social projects, and many Social enterprises flounder in the harsh realities of commerce (Austin, Stevenson, and Wei-Killern, 2012). To improve all enterprises’ social performance, the paper introduces the Social Project Grid, a dual-factor assessment tool which prioritizes social projects for better managerial oversight. In specific, it compares social projects on their Resource Use and Outcome Clarity to highlight which projects are successful and which are in trouble. Not only is …

Recruiting Sales Students: The Value Of Professionals In The Classroom, Blake Nielson, Shannon Cummins Nov 2018

Recruiting Sales Students: The Value Of Professionals In The Classroom, Blake Nielson, Shannon Cummins

Marketing & Entrepreneurship Faculty Publications

It can be difficult for employers to recruit sales students because of the supply/demand gap. This is true despite increases in university sales education programs. This study investigates the impact of a sales organization representative giving an in-class presentation about student intent to pursue employment at the organization. The results indicate that a quality in-class presentation can improve students’ desire to work for the organization, but an average in-class presentation or shorter extracurricular presentation had no positive effect. These results imply that an in-class presentation should be taken seriously and done well in order to positively impact the recruitment process.

This article suggests that the better solution to stopping corrupt practices is to ban some transfers all together.

Entrepreneurship, College, And Credit: The Golden Triangle, Roberto M. Samaniego, Juliana Yu Sun Nov 2018

Entrepreneurship, College, And Credit: The Golden Triangle, Roberto M. Samaniego, Juliana Yu Sun

Research Collection School Of Economics

We develop a model to evaluate the aggregate impact of college finance in an environment with entrepreneurship. The calibrated model captures the stylized fact that entrepreneurs with college are more common and more profitable in the United States. The calibration indicates this is mainly because higher labor earnings allow college‐educated agents to ameliorate credit constraints if and when they eventually become entrepreneurs. Changes in financing constraints on entrepreneurs can thus affect college attendance, and changes in financing constraints on college can affect entrepreneurship rates as well.
