Tropical Faustian: Nick Joaquin’S Spenglerian Imagining Of Colonial History In The Post-Authoritarian Philippines, Hidde Van Der Wall
Fine Arts Department Faculty Publications
This article discusses how Philippine writer Nick Joaquin applied the ideas of Oswald Spengler in his historiography; notably the collection Culture and History (1988); his contribution to the post- authoritarian renegotiation of a national history fraught with colonial conflict and loss. This article argues that Joaquin adapted Spengler’s ideas; proposing the presence of a “Faustian” Filipino soul formed during the Spanish-colonial period; to a contradictory effect. It allowed him to assert a national identity that challenged the dichotomous ways in which Philippine history was conventionally conceived; but it also reintroduced Eurocentric and homogenizing schemes; reinforcing existing hegemonies in the postcolony.
Framing Of The Unified Examination Certificate By Malaysian Ethnic Newspapers, Kai Chee Lam, Yeo Wei Ting, Lay Hoon Ang, Foo Terng Hoe
Framing Of The Unified Examination Certificate By Malaysian Ethnic Newspapers, Kai Chee Lam, Yeo Wei Ting, Lay Hoon Ang, Foo Terng Hoe
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Media framing makes an issue salient. This study attempts to determine the frequency of episodic and thematic frames in news about the Unified Examination Certificate issue and identify the framing dimensions and valence used. Textual analysis of the content and headlines was performed on 100 news articles from newspapers of two languages. Results indicate that all the articles were framed episodically, with the “attribution of responsibility” dimension used most frequently, followed by the “human interest” and “conflict” dimensions. Chinese articles tended to use neutral valance, whereas Malay articles mostly used negative valence. These findings provide insights into ethnic politically-influenced and …
Taleng Phai : A Chakrabhand Puppet Play : Characteristics Of Performance Literature, Ratchaneekorn Ratchatakorntrakoon
Taleng Phai : A Chakrabhand Puppet Play : Characteristics Of Performance Literature, Ratchaneekorn Ratchatakorntrakoon
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This research examines literary techniques used in the adaptation of Lilit Taleng Phai to a Chakrabhand puppet play and analyzes characteristics of Taleng Phai: A Chakrabhand Puppet Play as performance literature. The study reveals that four literary techniques were used to make this adaptation: 1) adaptation of the content; 2) the characters; 3) the pattern; and 4) the presentation. These adaptations contribute to the characteristics of puppet play as performance literature through five conventions: 1) use of an invocation for puppet performance; 2) inclusion of puppet songs; 3) insertion of jokes; 4) method of delivery of puppets to the stage; …
Spatialisation Of Text Worlds: Contrastive Interpretations In P.L. Travers’S Mary Poppins, Kriangkrai Vathanalaoha
Spatialisation Of Text Worlds: Contrastive Interpretations In P.L. Travers’S Mary Poppins, Kriangkrai Vathanalaoha
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Fictional situations recounted by a narrator instantaneously trigger a mental representation of a text world (Gavins 2007) which aims to explicate how meaning is achieved by readers based on salient theories of stylistics. This study examines how text world creation is established while reading Mary Poppins (Travers 2014). Crucial excerpts are explored to explain how readers perceive events that constitute the narrative. As the author recounts all events through an omniscient perspective, a discourse world is established through schematic data of all participants in the discourse based on common ground information. Deictic shift (Segal 1995) is employed to demonstrate how …
Thailand’S Trade Relations With The German Democratic Republic : The Example Of Carl Zeiss Jena, Christina Warning
Thailand’S Trade Relations With The German Democratic Republic : The Example Of Carl Zeiss Jena, Christina Warning
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
With the example of one of the German Democratic Republic’s (gdr) most renowned high-tech companies, Carl Zeiss Jena, this article argues that despite global and regional pressures, Thailand’s international trade relations have been nurtured largely without reference to ideological bias. Founded in 1846, the Carl Zeiss Jena Company grew to become an important patent holder in the production and export of precision optical instruments. By the 1930s, Carl Zeiss Jena was already an important international player, attracting military institutions and land surveying specialists, including clients from Siam/Thailand. In the decads to come, Carl Zeiss Jena’s relations with Thailand transcended the …
Transitivity System And A Translation Of Lexical Metaphors : The Case Of The Emirates Airline Website, Pasakara Chueasuai
Transitivity System And A Translation Of Lexical Metaphors : The Case Of The Emirates Airline Website, Pasakara Chueasuai
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Lexical metaphors colourise literary as well as non-literary texts. In the case of a website, it can make the text more appealing and consequently improve the sales of a company. In the highly competitive airline industry, an impressive webpage plays a significant role, especially in online reservation and purchase. This article examines the lexical metaphors used in the English and Thai websites of the Emirates Airline, adopting Transitivity of the Systemic Functional Linguistics by Eggins (2004) as the analytical framework. It also explores how the translated lexical metaphors are similar to and/or different from the original version. The study finds …

Affective And Cognitive Processes In Cancer Narratives, Monica Kah-Pei Liaw, Su-Hie Ting, Kee-Man Chuah, Collin Jerome
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Research on cancer narratives has not contextualised emotional and cognitive processes in stages of coping. The study examined linguistic indicators of affective and cognitive processes in narratives of 31 Malaysian cancer survivors. The analysis of the 58,787-word transcript using Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (liwc) software revealed that coping with cancer is a case of mind over emotions, with 12.52% of words related to cognitive processes and 4.17% to affective processes. Frequently used words linked to cognitive processes indicated the cancer survivors’ rationalisations of their denial of the diagnosis and explanations of treatment. Frequently used positive affective words reflect their …
“Bad Luck For The Chinese” : France And The Transit Of War Materiel To China During The Sino-Japanese War (1937–1939), Alexandre Barthel
“Bad Luck For The Chinese” : France And The Transit Of War Materiel To China During The Sino-Japanese War (1937–1939), Alexandre Barthel
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
The attitude of France towards the Sino-Japanese War that started in 1937 has given rise to various judgments. Officially neutral, France is often presented as having taken, at least morally, a favorable attitude toward China. Yet the French government had officially prohibited the transit of war materiel en route to China across the Indochinese border. This issue became increasingly important as the Japanese blockade of China progressed and conditioned the capacity of Chiang Kai-shek’s government to continue the fight. The diplomatic archives of the United States, greatly concerned by the situation in China, shed more light on France’s policy in …
Influences Of Béla Bartók’S Piano Compositions On Alberto Ginastera’S Piano Music, Karn Gularnupong, Ampai Buranaprapuk
Influences Of Béla Bartók’S Piano Compositions On Alberto Ginastera’S Piano Music, Karn Gularnupong, Ampai Buranaprapuk
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This study seeks to reveal the musical relationship between Bartók’s and Ginastera’s piano compositions, showing stylistic conceptualizations of twentieth-century Western art music which held many interesting musical aspects, specifically in the classical piano repertoire. This musicological research employs stylistic analysis and theoretical analysis to shed some light on Bartók’s and Ginastera’s piano music vocabulary. Following this methodology, it is revealed that Ginastera’s compositional language was very much influenced by the highly unique characteristics of Bartók’s. Such characteristics include the axial system, Bulgarian peasant rhythmic dance, bi-modality, intervallic cell (Z-cell, 0167), hexachordal sets of octatonic collections, the symmetrical old Hungarian pentatonic …
On A Path Towards Forgiveness : Garden-Practices And Aesthetics Of Engagement In Tan Twan Eng’S, Darin Pradittatsanee
On A Path Towards Forgiveness : Garden-Practices And Aesthetics Of Engagement In Tan Twan Eng’S, Darin Pradittatsanee
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This paper examines the human-nature relationship in the art of Japanese gardening in Tan Twan Eng’s The Garden of Evening Mists (2012). Drawing upon the aesthetics of Japanese gardening and theories of garden art, it argues that the novel advocates the complementarity of nature and human artifice in gardening. Japanese gardening which is related to the Taoist concept of yinyang and the Buddhist notion of impermanence, together with its principle of shakkei (borrowed landscape), suggests a combination of anthropocentric and ecocentric relationships with nature. Moreover, since Japanese aesthetics is interwoven with ways of living, the paper examines how the female …
Auto-Part Terms In Thai : A Cognitive Semantic Analysis, Unchalee Singnoi Wongwattana
Auto-Part Terms In Thai : A Cognitive Semantic Analysis, Unchalee Singnoi Wongwattana
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This article presents an investigation of Thai auto-part terms in Cognitive Semantics. With at least 1,000 auto-part terms in our data analysis, we argue that the conceptual naming strategy is linguistically effective in understanding auto parts in the Thai culture. Metaphorically, the resemblance operation enhances the degree of lexical richness by enabling the auto-part conceptualization with four source domains: surrounding object, animal, human, and plant. Metonymically, source domains such as shape, function, part, material, position, involved organ, motion, sound and space function in the source-in-target operation, and the category machine/ device appears as a source domain in the target-in-source operation. …
“Darling, Beauty Is Pain”, Porranee Singpliam
“Darling, Beauty Is Pain”, Porranee Singpliam
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
How has postfeminist media culture traveled transnationally? What contributes to the postfeminist media’s popularity in Thailand? This paper performs a content analysis of YouTube’s reality show, This is Me Vatanika. The show features gender issues and the promotion of gender equality, enhances women’s empowerment, encourages women’s leadership and rhetorically calls upon its viewers to partake in the process of self-invention. I draw upon postfeminist media culture and its sensibilities and argue that this reality show inspires a new modality of femininity endemic in Thai society and that it interpolates neoliberal women in line with the logic of wealth and class, …
Friendship, Humility, And The Complicated Morality Of E. B. White’S Charlotte’S Web, Phacharawan Boonpromkul
Friendship, Humility, And The Complicated Morality Of E. B. White’S Charlotte’S Web, Phacharawan Boonpromkul
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Charlotte’s Web (1952) by E. B. White is a classic children’s book praised for the memorable friendship between its two protagonists. This article explores the problematic bond that results from Wilbur’s greater demand on Charlotte and Charlotte’s act of devotion. It also examines the moral value of humility, from the word “humble” which Charlotte weaves to praise Wilbur, which can be questionable as it is intertwined with innocence or ignorance, and better suits Charlotte who is reticent of her accomplishment. That she must pass on without recognition casts doubt on the author’s presentation of friendship and the said moral value. …
Sentimental Novels And Anti-Sentimental Heroines : Womanhood Redefined In Late Eighteenth-Century British Novels, Oak Joo Yap
Sentimental Novels And Anti-Sentimental Heroines : Womanhood Redefined In Late Eighteenth-Century British Novels, Oak Joo Yap
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Protagonists in the eighteenth-century British sentimental novel persevere in the face of extreme misery to remain chaste or to uphold their moral principles as dictated by convention. These characters excessive sentiments were viewed as highly desirable even by many men. Yet at the same time, there was considerable resistance against sentimental novels as they were increasingly denounced for encouraging women to indulge in “overstretched sensibility.” Highlighting the unjust treatment of women rather than their virtues in enduring it, novels with an anti-sentimental stance present independent heroines who question traditional female gender norms or rebel against authority in the spirit of …
Is It Possible To Maintain Information Flow In Japanese Into Thai Translation? A Study Of Connecting Clauses, Somkiat Chawengkijwanich
Is It Possible To Maintain Information Flow In Japanese Into Thai Translation? A Study Of Connecting Clauses, Somkiat Chawengkijwanich
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This paper investigates the ordering of connecting subordinate and coordinate clauses in Japanese-Thai translation to examine whether it is possible to maintain information flow from the source text. Japanese preposed clauses were translated using both preposed and postposed clauses in the Thai translated text. Preposed clauses were used widely when they provided: 1) listed information; 2) grounded information for comprehending main clauses; 3) the framework within which main clauses are held; 4) temporal sequences; and 5) information linking prior context to a new discourse topic. Postposed clauses were used mainly to modify main clauses. In cases where clauses provided the …
Bissu’S Transvestites In The Buginese-Makassar Tradition Through The Transformation Of Faisal Oddang’S Literary Works: An Intertextuality Study, Saharul Hariyono, Nurhadi Bewe
Bissu’S Transvestites In The Buginese-Makassar Tradition Through The Transformation Of Faisal Oddang’S Literary Works: An Intertextuality Study, Saharul Hariyono, Nurhadi Bewe
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Writer Faisal Oddang narrated the existence of the bissu community seemingly reconstructed from an understanding of the historical text to become more colorful. This article questions how the transformation model of bissu community figures is revealed in Oddang’s fictional work. This study utilizes Julia Kristeva’s intertext abstracted through ideologeme as a text arrangement that refers to the space of exterior texts (semiotic practice). The results of the study show: first, how the transformation model of the bissu community character appears in the work of fiction; second, the libido of bissu community in their sacred place; third, the bissu community character …
Alienation In The Game Of Chance Under Capitalism, Intira Charuchinda
Alienation In The Game Of Chance Under Capitalism, Intira Charuchinda
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Alienation is a universal theme in literature. The game of chance or gambling under capitalism can produce a hostile social setting for those who are unaware of its negative impacts. In such a social milieu, people can experience feelings of alienation, failing to make their lives their own. This paper analyzes the theme of alienation in the game of chance under capitalism in two stories written by s.e.a. Write Awardees, The Lottery of Karma by Chanthi Deuanesavanh and Lottery by Catherine Lim, through the lens of literary devices. The social settings of these stories are two countries in Southeast Asia, …
Significance And Values Of The Cathedral Of The Immaculate Conception, Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand, Lalida Boonmee
Significance And Values Of The Cathedral Of The Immaculate Conception, Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand, Lalida Boonmee
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Physical change in religious architecture has an effect on perception of the building’s historical value and significance. This article discusses the case of the physical transformation of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception which has undergone four successive changes in architectural characteristics since Christianity was first established in the area in 1881. Methodologically, this study comprises a review of historical documents and interviews with Christians who live in the cathedral’s neighbouring areas. The result shows that the cathedral is significant for local residents as a centre of Christianity and beliefs which have been handed down through generations. From the beginning …
The Double-Edged Sword Of Mandarin : Language Shift And Cultural Maintenance Among Middle-Aged Chinese-Malaysians, Teresa Wai See Ong, Robert A. Troyer
The Double-Edged Sword Of Mandarin : Language Shift And Cultural Maintenance Among Middle-Aged Chinese-Malaysians, Teresa Wai See Ong, Robert A. Troyer
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Previous research has demonstrated that the increasing importance of Mandarin in education and public life has led many younger Chinese-Malaysians to regard Mandarin as their mother tongue and part of their cultural identity rather than a heritage language. Fewer studies have documented the language repertoires of middle-aged and older Chinese-Malaysians. This paper presents a qualitative study of Mandarin use conducted with six Chinese-Malaysians aged 40 and older. The participants reported extensive use of Mandarin in the domains of home, work, religion, and cultural maintenance, which were served by a heritage language in the past. This indicates that the use of …

Ensemble Of Phanom Rung, Mueang Tam And Plai Bat Sanctuaries And The Phimai Cultural Route: Comparative Study And Future Expectation In World Heritage Context, Saowalux Poshyanandana
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
The removal of “Phimai, its Cultural Route and the Associated Temples of Phanomroong and Muangtam” from the the World Heritage Tentative List in 2019 indicates the change of focus of the Thailand State Party away from this emsemble originally included as components of the Phimai cultural route. This paper discusses the reasons behind this change, the values and ouv as well as advantages and disadvantages of these two proposals in the context of World Heritage nomination. It concludes that the proposal of the Ensemble of Phanom Rung was made after work on nominating the Phimai cultural route faced management obstacles …
Who, Or What, Is Lost : Singapore’S Impressions Of Christmas Island, C. 1960–1990, Ying-Kit Chan
Who, Or What, Is Lost : Singapore’S Impressions Of Christmas Island, C. 1960–1990, Ying-Kit Chan
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Although Singapore no longer governs Christmas Island, either on behalf of its British colonial administrators or for itself, some Singaporeans continue to regard it as a lost territory and have false impressions that it once belonged and should again belong to Singapore. By examining this complexity related to Christmas Island and its possible implications for Singapore’s national psyche, this paper surveys the newspapers of Singapore and oral history records of Singaporean ministers and officials for accounts of Christmas Island. It suggests that Singaporean newspapers’ portrayal of Christmas Island as a neglected Australian overseas territory contributed to some Singaporeans’ perception that …
Gendered Negotiation Of Space: A Study On Gender And Mobility Among Transgender Persons In Pakistan, Sana Illahe
Gendered Negotiation Of Space: A Study On Gender And Mobility Among Transgender Persons In Pakistan, Sana Illahe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Transgender persons, known as khwaja sira in Pakistan, have historically been marginalized and excluded from various spatial domains, as they do not fit the societal norms of binary gender. They are subject to gender discipline by the Pakistani society to coerce them into conforming to the social norms. This research study uses in-depth interviews and applies grounded theory in conjunction with Michel Foucault’s concept of discipline to explore how khwaja sira are subject to societal discipline in Pakistan. The discipline ranges from tacit to overt forms, including verbal and sexual harassment. Khwaja sira are disciplined within their families, in formal …
Into The Woods: Toward A Material Poetics Of The Tropical Forest In Philippine Literature, Glenn L. Diaz
Into The Woods: Toward A Material Poetics Of The Tropical Forest In Philippine Literature, Glenn L. Diaz
English Faculty Publications
This study considers how the tropical forest as a material and discursive space mediates the ways in which history is imagined in Philippine literary texts and literary production. Mobilizing ideas from new materialism, material poetics, and tropicality, the paper looks at generative moments from indigenous and revolutionary literature—two broad traditions whose conditions of possibility are inextricably linked with the materiality of the tropical forest and thus inevitably evince the structuring force of such nonhuman agencies and subjectivities. By disclosing how the “more than human” is constitutive of history and historical subject formation, it seeks to foreground the agency of Philippine …
Autopoetics, Market Competence, And The Transnational Author, Maria Gabriela Martin
Autopoetics, Market Competence, And The Transnational Author, Maria Gabriela Martin
English Faculty Publications
Although materialist analyses have critiqued the institutionalization of postcolonial studies and its emergence in global capitalism, only few have addressed the role of creative writing in standardizing migrant novelistic production to what Mark McGurl has designated as ‘program fiction’ whose trademark is the practice of “involuted self-reference”. In filling this gap, this paper looks into Gina Apostol’s writings and their reception by international audiences as exemplary of the cultural capital of program fiction. While Apostol’s autofictions/ficto-criticism points to the influence of creative writing in her novels — she studied under John Barth in the MFA program in Johns Hopkins University, …
Vernacular Virtual: Toward A Philippine New Materialist Poetics Authors, Christian Jil R. Benitez
Vernacular Virtual: Toward A Philippine New Materialist Poetics Authors, Christian Jil R. Benitez
Filipino Faculty Publications
This essay turns to and through the Philippine vernacular in order to open up the possibility of a new materialist regard of literature, one that specifically stems from the Philippine tropics. It proposes that the opportunity for such a tropical materialism rests on the onomatopoeism observed in the vernacular. Onomatopoeia, as a material linguistic principle, is recognized here to be most instructive in reunderstanding Philippine folk poetry — texts which date back to the precolonial period — in terms beyond mere representation. As a counterpoint to these traditional literary texts, the essay also ruminates on the poetry of Jose Garcia …
The Teleserye Story: Three Periods Of The Evolution Of The Filipino Tv Soap Opera, Louie Jon A. Sanchez
The Teleserye Story: Three Periods Of The Evolution Of The Filipino Tv Soap Opera, Louie Jon A. Sanchez
English Faculty Publications
The essay chronicles the history of the teleserye or the Filipino TV soap opera, one of today’s transnational televisual products making waves in different parts of the globe. It covers three periods—the period of transition from radio to TV (1962 to 1986), the period of competition (1986-2000), and the period of transformation (2000-present). Traversing through 60 years of the form’s enduring presence in Philippine television, it traces the format’s beginnings as it was introduced to the medium in a highly volatile social environment, and assesses its continued flourishing in democratized, contemporary times and consequent entry into the highly competitive global …

Locality Bias Effect And Interpretation Of Thai Reflexive Anaphors, Gazidate Supwatanapaisan, Theeraporn Ratitamkul
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
The two forms of Thai reflexive anaphors, tuaɁeeŋ ‘self’ and tua+pronoun+Ɂeeŋ ‘pronoun-self’, have been claimed to exhibit different referential patterns. While tuaɁeeŋ only co-refers with a local antecedent np within the same clause, tua+pronoun+Ɂeeŋ can refer to both local and distant antecedent np s. In this study, a self-paced reading experiment was used to examine whether and how Locality Bias guided the comprehenders’ online interpretation of tuaɁeeŋ and tua+pronoun+Ɂeeŋ. Our results showed that the reading time was significantly faster when a reflexive anaphor referred to a local np than when it did to a a distant np, regardless of …
The Dynamics Of Kha Phra Kaeo Identity In The Context Of Thai-Lao History And Politics, Kiattisak Bangperng
The Dynamics Of Kha Phra Kaeo Identity In The Context Of Thai-Lao History And Politics, Kiattisak Bangperng
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This research reports on findings from an ethnographic study on the Kha Phra Kaeo ethnicity to uncover its formation and to analyze its dynamics and cultural negotiations in the context of Thai-Lao history and politics. The ethnonym Kha Phra Kaeo designates an ethnic group descended from the Bru, with a consistent cultural structure, language and belief system. They were first perceived as an ethnic group due to events connected to the possession of a contested Buddha image called Phra Kaeo Phaluek Mok. They are seen as more distinctly Kha Phra Kaeo than the Bru, to whom they were related. …

Articulating Korean American Women’S Power Amidst Conflicts Of Colonialism And War In Helie Lee’S Still Life With Rice, Kittiphong Praphan
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Gender is a quintessential issue in Asian American literature, since Asian Americans are seen as weak with feminine qualities, according to the Western colonial concept. This paper examines Korean American women’s power through an analysis of Hongyong, the female protagonist in Helie Lee’s Still Life with Rice, who survives Japanese colonization in Korea and the Korean War and finally starts her new life as a Korean American woman in the United States. Hongyong goes beyond the concept of patriarchy in Korea and rescues herself and her family with her intelligence, determination, power, and bravery. As an Asian woman who …

Interrogating Whiteness In Graduate Education Culture: A Phenomenological Exploration Of Southeast Asian American Graduate Student Experiences, Lesley Nina Sisaket
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study is to understand the role that whiteness has in shaping the graduate education experiences of Southeast Asian American students in the United States. This study explores two research questions. 1) How do Southeast Asian American graduate students describe their graduate education? 2) How do Southeast Asian American graduate students describe concepts of whiteness, if any, throughout their graduate education? According to the experiences from six selfidentifying Southeast Asian American students, their graduate education experiences were described to be racially taxing, unchallenging, and isolating experiences. These findings stemmed from their graduate education experiences, which …
