The Symbolism Of Clothing: The Naked Truth About Jacques Lacan, Peter D. Mathews
The Symbolism Of Clothing: The Naked Truth About Jacques Lacan, Peter D. Mathews
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In the work of Jacques Lacan there exists an extended metaphor of clothing, whereby the ‘naked’ truth is always ‘clothed’ in deception. For Lacan, clothing functions at the intersection of the symbolic and the imaginary, with outward appearance shaping what we imagine to be underneath in order to determine the landscape of symbolic desire. Joan Copjec considers the political implications of this metaphor, arguing that utilitarianism, in particular, divides desire into a false dichotomy of rational, naked desire, and the ornamental clothing of irrationality, a mindset woven into both capitalism and French colonialism. The article then examines two examples from …
Influence Of Subjective Determinants On Personal Formation, Mahmud Majitov
Influence Of Subjective Determinants On Personal Formation, Mahmud Majitov
The Light of Islam
The article provides a structural and functional analysis of the social essence of an individual, the patterns of its formation, the problems of relationships between society and the individual, reveals the features of its development. Social and negative aspects of modern social development, the development of science and technology, the growth of a person’s intellectual potential increase attention to the problem of personality. Complex developments, dramatic changes in the relationship between man, society, and nature, in turn, indicate the need for social research in this regard. It is necessary to study the dialectical relations between postmodern society and the individual, …

Harmony & Cancellation Culture, Erica Stonestreet
Harmony & Cancellation Culture, Erica Stonestreet
Philosophy Faculty Publications
“Cancelling” people cuts off relationships in the name of taking back power from those who abuse it. But using the ancient—but still current—concept of harmony, I ask whether this is the best way to go about fixing our problems.
Believing On Eggshells: Epistemic Injustice Through Pragmatic Encroachment, Julius Schonherr, Javiera Perez Gomez
Believing On Eggshells: Epistemic Injustice Through Pragmatic Encroachment, Julius Schonherr, Javiera Perez Gomez
Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications
This paper defends the claim that pragmatic encroachment—the idea that knowledge is sensitive to the practical stakes of believing—can explain a distinctive kind of epistemic injustice: the injustice that occurs when prejudice causes someone to know less than they otherwise would. This encroachment injustice, as we call it, occurs when the threat of being met with prejudice raises the stakes for someone to rely on her belief when acting, by raising the level of evidential support required for knowledge. We explain this notion of encroachment injustice, connect it to the empirical literature on implicit bias, and defend it against …
Book Review: Reckonings: Numerals, Cognition, And History By Stephen Chrisomalis, Milton Rosa, Daniel Clark Orey
Book Review: Reckonings: Numerals, Cognition, And History By Stephen Chrisomalis, Milton Rosa, Daniel Clark Orey
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
This review of Reckonings shares our thoughts on the diverse insights presented by Stephen Chrisomalis’s version of the history of numerical notation. Chrisomalis suggests that members of distinct cultural groups write numbers as an active choice in accordance with their own sociocultural contexts, which reflect the influences of historical, cognitive, social, economic, political, environmental, and cultural factors. This book integrates comparative, cognitive, and evolutionary understandings on numerical cognition with historical and linguistic evidence on the use and transformation of numeral systems through the historical advancement of numeracy. Chrisomalis offers an interesting historical perspective on numbers that builds upon three main …

Writing As Memory Work Teaching The Civic Deliberations Over Monument Removals, Jill Swiencicki, Barbara Lowe
English Faculty/Staff Publications
Social justice goals are usually sought in civic or community settings in which stakeholders represent competing frameworks about what is just, good, and true. Modeling for students a way to identify these competing frameworks, and then intervene in deliberations to achieve just ends, is the focus of our assignment sequence. We examine civic deliberations over removing racist public symbols in this assignment for first-year students enrolled in linked rhetoric and philosophy courses. We read broadly in theories of public memory and civic identity, examine in depth one community’s deliberation, and reflect on public symbols in our home communities. The final …
Against Theory—Again (Though With Reservations), Ivan Gaskell
Against Theory—Again (Though With Reservations), Ivan Gaskell
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
In Thinking with Images (2019), John Carvalho proposes an “aesthetics without theory,” a phrase to be taken rhetorically rather than literally, for he accepts that percipients of artworks bring a theoretical knowledge to their encounters. He seeks to balance appropriate theoretical knowledge, notably Gibson’s theory of affordances, with reliance on empirical engagement with artworks to produce what he terms an “enactivist aesthetics.” He explores this proposal through discussion of four case studies: works by Francis Bacon, Duane Michals, Marcel Duchamp, and Jean-Luc Godard. This overview challenges Carvalho’s concern with meaning above making and use; and his apparent reluctance to offer …
Thinking With Film: On John Carvalho’S Reading Of Godard’S Le Mépris, Deborah Knight
Thinking With Film: On John Carvalho’S Reading Of Godard’S Le Mépris, Deborah Knight
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
In Thinking with Images, John Carvalho is especially interested in situations where we do not know what to think about a work of art — where it perplexes us, where we cannot find answers to the questions it raises. I will focus on Carvalho’s final chapter which discusses Jean-Luc Godard’s 1963 film, Le Mépris (Contempt), adapted from the novel by Alberto Moravia. I argue that Le Mépris is not primarily about its literary content involving the collapse of a marriage during the filming of an adaptation of Homer’s Odyssey. I recommend that instead we think about such …
John Carvalho’S Thinking With Images, An Enactivist Aesthetics, Sonia Sedivy
John Carvalho’S Thinking With Images, An Enactivist Aesthetics, Sonia Sedivy
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
John Carvalho’s Thinking with Images, an Enactivist Aesthetics argues that puzzling artworks can draw us into a special activity – thinking when we don’t know what to think – which is valuable because it takes us beyond our skills and understanding. Enactivism is the theory of mind that best explains such thinking. The book illustrates this proposal with four chapters that detail Carvalho’s highly personal or individual encounters with enigmatic works of art. I raise two concerns. First, the four illustrative chapters say that they are enactivist, but they do not show this. The illustrative chapters detail considerations about …

More Thinking About Thinking With Images: A Response To Ivan Gaskell, Deborah Knight And Sonia Sedivy, John M. Carvalho
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
I want to start by thanking my critics for reading my book and coming to so many insightful comments and challenging observations about it. I especially want to thank Deborah Knight for suggesting a panel to discuss the book and for doing so much to realize it. There is so much to say about the intelligent and generous commentary offered by Ivan Gaskell, Deborah Knight, and Sonia Sedivy. Put briefly, in the short space below, I say my book thinks mostly about how and that artworks mean rather than what they mean, as Gaskell recommends. Knight’s remarks prompt me to …
Elgin's "Native Tongue": A "Me Too" Universe?, Amir Barati
Elgin's "Native Tongue": A "Me Too" Universe?, Amir Barati
Tête à Tête: Journal of Francophone Studies
Suzette Haden Elgin’s novel Native Tongue (1984) provides a fascinating critique of the ideologies inscribed into patriarchal language and evokes an extremely valuable linguistic and political awareness. This article will examine the liability of the ways the novel revolts against the patriarchal society via the introduction of a gynocentric linguistic intervention. I claim, Elgin’s novel showcases an invaluable instance of how it is possible for women to revolt against the pillars of patriarchy through manipulations at the gestalt and schematic level of language and most specifically, the bodily metaphoric quality of the English. This proposed transformation of the schematic and …

This paper discusses the Filipino identity and how it is promoted through the branding of Pandayan Bookshop, a locally owned company and has been operating stores selling school and office supplies, books, magazines, posters, charts, and artwork. Using Porter’s value chain model and Rumelt’s principles of business strategy evaluation as underpinnings, the researchers analyzed the processes or activities the company undertakes that include incoming logistics, operations, outgoing logistics, marketing and sales, services, and human resource management. The data revealed that the branding of Pandayan Bookshop marked by its use of the Filipino language reflects Filipinos’ good character, camaraderie, and humanity. …

Visualizing Community: Images Of Poverty In Aphilippine Rural Community, Joseph Reylan Viray, Raul Roland Sebastian, Nelson Baun, Ronillo Viray
Mabini Review
The study zeroed in on the perception of college students who are exposed to sights of poverty in their immediate environment. The student-participants were asked to provide their perception, understanding, and behaviour towards poverty using the photographs that they took on their own. In qualitative research practice, this methodology is called photo elicitation. It was revealed, among others, that the participants have shown negative perceptions about poverty. They strongly felt bad about each photograph that they took and what these images portrayed. The participants visualized their community and thereby weaved analyses and opinions that encroached on various philosophical and sociological …

Foucault And Beyond: From Sovereignty Powerto Contemporary Biopolitics, Hazel Marie Vitales
Mabini Review
In this paper, I will provide an interpretation of Foucauldian theoretical understanding on natures of power from sovereign power to biopolitics. In order to give further depth and texture to what he means by biopolitics, I will attempt to connect biopolitics with his earlier work Discipline and Punish. The term ‘biopolitics’ was actually mentioned by Foucault on the last chapter of his History of Sexuality Volume 1: An Introduction, where he also claimed it as a technology of power linked to biopower. Foucault wrote that the highest function of biopolitics is not to kill, but to invest life through and …

Sen And Žižek On The Multiculturalist Approach To Non-Violence, Marlon Jesspher De Vera
Mabini Review
This paper analyzes areas of convergence in the works of Amartya Sen and Slavoj Žižek in their criticisms of the multiculturalist approach to non-violence. First, Žižek’s characterization of the liberal discourse of guilt and fear is presented. Then, Sen’s key ideas on multiculturalism, tolerance, and rational critique are explicated. Next, a synthesis of Sen and Žižek’s notions of universality, freedom, and rationality, as well as of their critical conceptions of globalization and anti-globalization are discussed. Subsequently, Sen and Žižek’s divergences on overcoming violence are examined. Lastly, from integrating Sen and Žižek’s thoughts, key theses are provided on the paradoxical character …
Shinran As Global Philosopher, Sarah Mattice
Shinran As Global Philosopher, Sarah Mattice
UNF Faculty Research and Scholarship
Gutoku Shinran (1173-1263) is one of Japan’s most creative and influential thinkers. He is the (posthumous) founder of what ultimately became Jōdo Shinshū, better known today as Shin Buddhism, the most widely practiced form of Buddhism in Japan. Despite this, his work has not received the global attention of other historical Japanese philosophical figures such as Kūkai (774-835) or Dōgen (1200-1253). The relationships of influence between Shin Buddhism in general—or Shinran’s work more specifically—and earlier Chinese sources, especially non-Buddhist sources, are complex, rarely examined in much detail, and often buried under layers of interpretive difficulties, made all the more challenging …

Theory Of Knowledge In The Tretise Of Al-Gazali “Al-Kistasu-Lmustakim” (Right Scales), Kodirov Davronbek
The Light of Islam
Today, one of the urgent tasks of the social sciences is the construction of the Third Renaissance in our country, the transfer of the heritage of our ancestors to the younger generation, and their education in the spirit of moral and spiritual ideas based on Islamic philosophy. Therefore, it is important to study and research the sources that underlie the religious and philosophical views that have been formed and consolidated in our country for centuries. One of these philosophical writings is Al-Qistasu-l-Mustakim (Right scales) by Abu Hamid Muhammad ibn Muhammad alGhazali, a thinker, lawyer, philosopher, and mystic who lived and …
