The Bangkok Rules and The Basic Principles for The Treatment of Prisoners are a specific outline of protections and rights for individuals( Bangkok specifically about women) within prisons adopted by the United Nations compromising states. While The United States is a leader in the United Nations and adopted this set of rules, their failures of commitment are extremely apparent. Every year, thousands of prison rapes occur behind bars in New York alone by the very guards meant to protect them. Does The Incorporation Of Justice In Axiology Solve Consequentialism's Distributive Pitfalls?, Moss Magnusson

Fred Feldman’s Justicized Act Utilitarianism (JAU) seeks to address the distributive shortcomings of consequentialist theories by incorporating justice in his axiology. By considering the distribution of intrinsic goods rather than solely their quantity, JAU aims to preserve consequentialism’s core principles while addressing justice-based objections. This paper critically examines JAU, arguing that while Feldman’s theory marks a significant advancement, it ultimately fails to reconcile consequentialism with justice in a meaningful way. Following an exposition of JAU, two critiques are presented through thought experiments to test its boundaries and implications.

This paper discusses Adolf Eichmann, an infamous figure for his role in the Nazi regime, and the ideas of evil, moral responsibility, and punishment. I argue for a new way of viewing Eichmann by focusing and classifying him as an evil person according to Claudia Card’s theory of evil in her work The Atrocity Paradigm and honing on Eichmann’s role as moral agent and responsible figure. Peter Pomerantsev has argued that, because the Soviet Union lost the Cold War, Russia had to adapt to a new epistemological world – a new way of knowing – more quickly than the “West;” He posits the fall of the Soviet Union as a defining moment in the development of disinformation as it is today. In this paper, the author builds on Pomerantsev’s argument to explore the idea that 9/11 triggered a similar epistemic shift in American society and that the ensuing traumas created a crisis of meaning that helps to explain the prevalence of disinformation in contemporary American discourse. …

Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)

Problems of sustainability are typically represented by major present-day challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental and social injustice. Framed this way, sustainable lives and societies depend on finding solutions to each problem. From another perspective, there is only one problem behind them all, stated by Gregory Bateson as: “…the difference between how nature works and the way people think,” and complexity provides a way to define and approach this problem. Comparative pride – that is, pride in how one compares to others in some respect – is often thought to be warranted. In this paper, I argue that this common position is mistaken. The paper begins with an analysis of how things seem when a person feels pride. Pride, I claim, presents some aspect of the self with which one identifies as being worthy. Moreover, in some cases, it presents this aspect of the self as something one is responsible for. I then go on to argue that when the focus of one’s pride is comparative, things are never as …
