The Riddle Of Religious Language, Luke Hillman
The Riddle Of Religious Language, Luke Hillman
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The following project analyzes religious life through the lens of religious language. Motivated by ideas of Wittgenstein and Wittgensteinians, religious language is shown to be nonsensical, and yet significant. Wittgenstein connects how we understand language with how we understand life, and this connection extends to religious life. This project offers an answer to how religious language is unique by comparing religious language to riddles and the process of answering riddles. In addition, religious language becomes understandable with imagination, a relationship with the transcendent, and an understanding of the kinds of language present in religious discourse. These ideas are solidified with …
Friendship Intimacy: A New Approach To Valuing Friendship, Benjamin Lugo
Friendship Intimacy: A New Approach To Valuing Friendship, Benjamin Lugo
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There is a tradition in moral theory that holds that friendship is necessary for living well. That is, if our aim is to live a good life or a flourishing life, then that life will include building and maintaining friendships. Aristotle and Plato both share this view and express similar claims about the necessity of friendship for the pursuer of a good life. Contemporaries of both have spent time interpreting their claims and have long commented on the intrinsic value of friendship. I pick up on a strand of the debate by exploring the purported value of friendship. While considerable …
Moore’S Paradox, The First-Person, And Self-Knowledge, Matthew Warren
Moore’S Paradox, The First-Person, And Self-Knowledge, Matthew Warren
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis argues that Wittgenstein’s remarks on Moore’s paradox can be useful in resolving several debates concerning self-knowledge, particularly as that knowledge is manifested in avowals of belief, taking the form of sentences like “I believe that P”. Usually, sentences like these are taken to have a special first-person authority, epistemically privileged in comparison to their third-person counterparts ("He believes that P") and yet free from any reliance on evidence or observation in order to be made justifiably. It is also assumed that these avowals are functioning uniformly as reports on the speaker's mental state. Often, accounts of self-knowledge are …

Righting Reproductive Wrongs: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Special Topoi In Alberto Fernández’S Pro-Voluntary Interruption Of Pregnancy Speeches, Kymberlie Crosby
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
The reproductive rights movement argues that abortion rights are fundamental and necessary for women to enjoy their human rights. Politicians opposed to abortion rights around the world have made it clear that they plan to ban abortion both statewide and nationwide. A country that has proven to be successful in defending its reproductive rights is Argentina. In 2020, the Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy Bill (Interrupción Voluntaria del Embarazo; IVE) democratically passed and legalized abortion throughout Argentina. Argentine President, Alberto Fernández, supported IVE and delivered a series of speeches over four years highlighting IVE and the progress that has succeeded each …

Praying To Tiktok, Seeking The Self: How Rhetoric Reveals And Conceals The World’S Most Powerful Guru Of The Postindustrial Age, Samantha L. Gillespie-Hoffman
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Imagine a world where the most powerful leader is a wellness guru that runs an elaborate church with millions of followers. The guru is so powerful that everyone believes they can read minds and make ordinary people rich and famous. The guru controls forms of communication, media channels, consumer tastes, and what people eat, drink, say, and even think. What if this guru was not human but actually an algorithm? Does this sound like the plot of a science fiction novel? I argue that this scenario is closer to reality than most will admit. In this project, readers encounter a …
What Is A Person? How Does One Become A Morally Good Person? The Intuitive View!, Tancredo Tivane
What Is A Person? How Does One Become A Morally Good Person? The Intuitive View!, Tancredo Tivane
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis centers around two philosophical problems: the concept of a person and the process by which one becomes a morally good person. Drawing on the works of philosophers such as Harry Frankfurt, Strawson, and A.J. Ayer, it begins with an inquiry into what it means to be a person. It argues that while humanhood, with its rational capacities, is a contingent rather than a necessary condition, it can serve as an accurate predictor of personhood. The thesis posits that personhood is an achievement rather than an inherent state, facilitated by interactions within a social framework that refine these rational …

International Review of Humanities Studies
The attacks on October 7th, 2023 sparked a new wave of escalation between Israel and Palestine with global news coverage. Though there is coverage on both sides, many are calling out the Western news media for being biased in their reports. This paper explores the diction used by Deutsche Welle (DW) when reporting Palestine and Israel from December 1st to December 8th, 2023. The paper will use the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) theory by Norman Fairclough to process the data using a qualitative approach. The study aims to examine whether the diction used by DW journalists in their reports reflects …
Can Human Rights Be Reconciled With Citizenship: Reconsidering Marx's Zur Judenfrage Today, David Ingram
Can Human Rights Be Reconciled With Citizenship: Reconsidering Marx's Zur Judenfrage Today, David Ingram
Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This essay critically re-examines Marx’s youthful analysis of the separation of church and state and his complex views about the function of rights in the modern state. I argue that Marx’s condemnation of Christian nationalism and endorsement of citizenship for Jews is consistent with his view that the modern, secular state cannot emancipate itself entirely from religiosity, as evidenced by the continuing legacy of nationalism and cultural identity politics today. Although Marx correctly follows Hegel in identifying modernity with a structural differentiation between civil society and state, I argue that he misunderstands the nature of this separation and, along with …

Hyperreality In Sharenting: Challenges Of Being An Indonesian Parent Today, Yosepha Arybowo, Maria Regina Widhiasti
International Review of Humanities Studies
The phenomenon of sharenting refers to the practice of parents, particularly mothers, sharing personal information in the form of text, photos, or videos about their child-rearing experiences and journey to parenthood on social media platforms. Social media, as a space of simulation, is considered to present an idealized version of parenting, showcasing perfect moments and achievements. This paper critically explores how the phenomenon of sharenting, especially by millennial mothers in Indonesia, contributes to the construction of family life representations that underlie parents' adaptation to idealized parenting standards on social media platforms. The paper samples sharenting content from several Instagram accounts …

Bunuh Diri Dan Untai Problematikanya: Sebuah Rekonstruksi Teoritik Atas Bunuh Diri, Nastiti Soegeng Lestari
Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi
In Indonesia, suicide research has largely overlooked structural factors at the meso and macro levels, whether as primary causes, contributing factors, or considerations for prevention strategies. The dominance of psychological and psychiatric approaches has marginalized sociological perspectives, limiting a more holistic understanding of suicide. Existing heuristic models primarily frame suicide as a consequence of mental health disorders or economic conditions, reinforcing a dichotomy: one perspective views suicide as a psychological and/or psychiatric phenomenon, while the other treats it as a sociological fact. However, suicide encompasses a far more complex reality that transcends this binary. This study offers a comprehensive theoretical …
