In its preamble, The Western Australian Charter of Multiculturalism (WA) commits the state to becoming: “A society in which respect for mutual difference is accompanied by equality of opportunity within a framework of democratic citizenship”. One of the principles of multiculturalism, as enunciated in the Charter, is “equality of opportunity for all members of society to achieve their full potential in a free and democratic society where every individual is equal before and under the law”. Given the present demands for teacher accountability, it is imperative that teacher preparation programs prepare teachers by developing their ability to reflect deeply about their practices and to seek better approaches in instruction. Action research offers a possible means of promoting critical reflectivity prior to graduation. However, undergraduates have not yet been exposed to the ways of research to make their inquiries systematic and their conclusions reliable and valid. This study explores how Latino first grade students develop mathematical problem solving and communication in their native language. Problem types came from Cognitively Guided Instruction (Carpenter et al. 1999) and were embedded in students’ cultural and linguisticexperiences. Findings show students solved a wide range of CGI problems and developed confidence, flexibility, and sophistication in their strategies and explanations.

This article analyzes a language revitalization program implemented in an elementary classroom on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, outside of Phoenix, Arizona. The authors created the program under the assumption that classroom pedagogy cannot help students learn their native language without everyday usage of the O'odham and Pipash languages at home. The authors provide the social and historical context for the community, and the language policies applied to the two tribes, and then they provide a detailed look at strenghts and weaknesses of implementing a language community model in the classroom. This article describes an innovative professional development model that uses on-site Teaching/Learning Centers in which teachers work and collaborate with other teachers to learn about effective methods of literacy instruction for linguistically and culturally diverse students. This model fosters collaborative, sustained, on-site, and practical development in which teachers plan, model, observe, discuss, and reflect together as they transform their practice.

An Investigation Of The Influence Of Irish As An L1 Or L2 On Subsequent Instructed Language Acquisition In L3 Or L4, Corina Griffin

Theses

Research in Ireland to date has paid little attention to the fact that all foreign language teaching occurs in the context where the FL (foreign language) is an L3. The present study examines the extent to which students transfer or modify strategies they had previously deployed in learning Irish to their L3/L4. It is proposed that students are deploying the same strategies in their learning of Irish as an L1/L2 and the foreign language (FL) as an L3/L4, thus indicating a similar approach to the learning process. Cognitive, metacognitive and socio-affective strategies are examined. The research also focuses on differences …

The purpose of this project is to promote meaningful cross-cultural communication in the ESL classroom. As a game, ORACLE works on various levels. The most obvious area is more effective language use through reading, speaking and writing. As a tool for culturalawareness, it reveals participants' underlying impressions/prejudices of one another as well as working on their ability to listen beyound the words spoken to the personality beneath. Its intent is the enrichment of people through cooperation and the understanding of the unpredictable nature of Humankind.
